I've been a bike commuter all my life and I wouldn't have it any other way. I inevitably get asked all sorts of silly questions about how I survive without a car. In today's video, I show how I do my grocery shopping by bike. When you're only option is to travel around town on two wheels, everything becomes an adventure, which makes everything FUN!

I started biking this past summer to lose weight - 70 pounds down the last time I weighed in, and that was before I started bike commuting. When I'm riding my bike, I'm actually having fun on my way to work, which is more than I can say about driving to work. I have so much fun riding my bike that I decided to make it my main form of transportation. After challenging myself to go car-free for a month in January, I decided to take the plunge. I'm selling my car next week and will be riding my bike exclusively for work, pleasure, and fitness from now on. With the proceeds from the car (a whopping $750), I'm planning on ordering a Priority bike (probably the the L Train). That'll be my main bike, and my current bike will be my back-up. Your videos have helped inspire me to take this leap at the age of 56 years young, and I really appreciate what you do.

good stuff here my man. i've been car free for a cpl years now and while it is super convenient and in some ways and circumstances needed to own a car i find if you have one you always opt to use it. since i've been walking and cycling everywhere for everything it also forces me to consider whether i actually need what i'm buying and prvents impulse buys when i go to stores. for me not having a car re-enforces self control and saves me a shit ton of money. and im not even gonna get into the mental peace i've realized since forgoing an automobile. what i mean is in a car over time we become impatient to an unacceptable degree imo and if you are walking or cycling i just find for whatever reason that hurry up and urgency etc that makes us impatient doesn't seem to happen. i think it's because i do my best thinking daily on my treks to work or the store. it's akin to moving meditation. lastly it keeps us closer to that natural reward man feels when he works for his needs directly not through surrogate activities like a job which is too far removed subconciously from obtaining your basic needs. i am not saying jobs are bad btw, just that we should work more directly to meet our needs whether it be raising animals or farming for your own food or trekking and cycling to buy them. the point is some effort needs to be applied directly to fulfill that basic need in order for your brain to asscociate it as a reward for the effort.. working, then getting a check and then driving to the store does not fulfill the mind in the same way because eating that meal is so far removed from the effort it took to meet that need.

Last month I moved from a large luxury home in Los Angeles to a small beachfront house in Florida. I sold my Corvette convertible and all my other fancy cars and bought a used bike for $50. The ocean is 500’ from my front door and surfers use the side of my yard as a shortcut to the ocean. I am so much happier now and biking everywhere is the icing on the proverbial cake!

Why I have a car for the first time in years...Mom lost her license and now I'm her driver. While watching this I had the thought to leave the car at her house and ride the bike there for her trips. Absence of car payment and insurance and maintenance and fuel = more money for the good stuff at the grocery store.

My wife & I have 3 grown daughters. I was insuring 5 cars. The most expensive to insure was our old minivan. It was also the least popular. Since our auto and home were bundled, it was cheaper to cover all 5 drivers for all 5 cars. So I sold the minivan for $3000 and biked to work for a year. After an injury, I got an electric car ($5000). I built an electric bike yesterday, and I’m about to go pick up groceries…

Good video, you have an entertaining personality, and it is clear that you are very passionate about your lifestyle. If more Americans (both rural and urban) shared your mindset, we would be in much better shape as a society married to our environment. I love to go grocery-biking too - not out of necessity, but pure enjoyment. I built what I call a "hillbilly mountain cruiser", which is a camouflaged XC MTB with cruiser seat & extended handlebars. I use a front/back basket-rack system with fishing rod holders, and a rucksack for gallons of milk & such, and it is great for river fishing and duck hunting as well. You and I are not that dissimilar (I hate those damn plastic bags too ;-) Safe riding.

Excellent. We stopped driving back in 2013 due to rising motoring costs and in 3 years we haven't really been stuck for shopping. One of the things we bought just after being car less was a cheap "BOB" type trailer and it has certainly earned its keep in the 3 years we have owned it, this year it had a new coat of paint so it matches my bike and I have also upgraded the wheel and fitted a rack and two mudguards to it (one front, one rear). One of the annoying things I found is that all the stuff that is kicked up by the back wheel of the bike is then thrown over the trailer, its bag, and contents so hopefully by modifying the fit of a front mudguard I can cut most of it out. This is sill a 'work in progress' thing at the moment but I have mental plans of how to make it work without causing other issues, I do love though how people make the assumption that its a struggle to do shopping by bike rather than by car ...... Bring on a fuel crisis then we'll see who struggles....

Nice! That BOB trailer is a beast for sure. I hope that you've inspired all your friends to give up their cars as well :) Cheers and keep the rubber side down.

I just starting riding a bike in May 2017 after years of not riding a bike. I bought a heavy and cheap Roadmaster from a thrift store for $45 (all I could find and afford). ant it is doing what i needed it to do. getting me off of my fat and lazy bum and riding. I love it. I wish i never stopped riding a bike I am so glad I am riding one now.

I'm 70 now and haven't owned a car in 15 years. I use a flat trailer with one of my bikes or my recumbent trike and put a large enclosed box on it for things like kerosene cans, groceries, gardening supplies, I didn't always rely on a bike or trike to commute, but have always had a bicycle and advocated for bikeable, walkable communities.

When I was a kid they didn't have bikes that could easily make it up to Nederland much less go above Eldora. ( the town, where my grandfather had a cabin before the yuppies took over) but when I came back as an adult there were many people trying to haul it up there , by the falls most were walking or turning back.

I'm 63, and I ride on a mountain bike all over town here in Riverside, CA. I got my first car when I was 18 and it just makes me sick to think of the hundreds of thousands of dollars I have spent on cars, parts, repairs, GASOLINE, insurance, registration, traffic and parking tickets, etc. through the years up until just a few years ago when I decided to go car free.
