Absolutely love the sound of 071 and 073, I used to love watching the 171 class unit passing the level crossing in sandymount as school kid, sadly don't see them anymore, With the cost of fuel now, I wonder how much longer they will be around

Hi Tom, You say 2 x 071 = 4,500hp. Have they been downgraded ? They were originally rated at 2,450hp each i.e. 4,900hp for the pair. Great video. They are my all time favourite Irish locos, and I have had all 18 for haulage including the 3 NIR 111s. Sadly, I never had the nerve to ask for a cabride, despite being a former National Operations Standards Manager for the railways in Britain. Had cabrides across Canada, Portugal, Spain, France, Italy and Austria, and even drove a loco on the mainline in Hungary. The job came with a national cabpass, so I have done hundreds in Blighty.

@@RYNT1157 Thanks tom. I did wonder whether 2,250hp was the power at rail rating. Cheers for the clarification. Visited Ireland and Northern Ireland @ 19 times. Always had a great time. Lovely country. Lovely people. Wife's family come from Co. Limerick. I am a life member of the Irish Traction Group too.

Ahaha. Mallow my home town. When I lived there they never "lashed up" those EMDs as they had lots of power for purpose. I used to get up w Andy Duane & Bertie Welsh back then. Also Brown Jack from Tralee !!! Before the days of footpath passes.

It must be an absolute privilege to drive these. Can any driver opt to drive these or is a whole different category/license for these? I’d pay to drive one haha So rare seeing both connected
