As a self employed master electrician in Chicago - I cannot tell you how many times I am asked to repair something non-electrical while I am doing electrical work at a person's home. I have hung many of doors and used a razor knife and chisel to do the hinge cutouts. I recently purchase the Ryobi door hinge template for my compact router. OMG! Absolutely perfect cutouts every time, uniform depth and cosmetically perfect. Best money I ever spent!

Just saw a coworker with one yesterday. Honestly never knew Ryobi made this. And I comes with the it too. Way to go Ryobi. Now they just need to make one for the door jambs where you need to add hinges on an existing door jamb.😂
@easttcobb5 жыл бұрын
Great tutorial! One thing I would add is when measuring the location of the hinges on the door, use the old door as your guide for placement of the hinges on the new door. For the top hinge on the new door, measure from the top of the old door to the top of the first hinge. Transfer that measurement to the new door. Same for the second and third hinge -- measure from the top of the door down to the top of the hinges.

I actually think the OP's method is better. Just line the doors up, clamp them together, and use a straightedge to mark where the hinges go. Easier, faster, and more foolproof. (At least I hope so because that's the way I'm going to do it!)

The nylon vise screw is adequate in my view.. The adjustable plate has four skid pads attached to it. All you need to do is to make sure the jig is flush to the door edge. Then, tighten the vise screw until it contacts the door side. Then tighten another half to 3/4 turn. Try to slide it with your hand. That is plenty of hold for the routing. If you tighten further, it actually warps the jig slightly and could throw your rout off a little. I found their bit provides the best fit for the hinges. If you use square hinges, a sharp chisel or the Porter Cable squaring chisel makes quick work of the adjustment needed. For $25, it did a number of replacement doors for me and could do a bunch more. I also have the Stanley TH8 jig, but that is best for new doors and jambs. Using the old door clamped to the new as a guide to locate the hinges ( with a combination square) avoids any measuring.

It's amazing how few ppl that DIY realize that if your installing hardware that locks & if the striker plate isn't just right, Anyone can just pop that lock in less than 3 seconds! Scary really! Yeah I have a deadbolt that secures the door, but why pay for a lock on the bottom if it means nothing when not installed correctly. Your videos are Great & would LOVE if you'd do a video about that!

How do you cut the curved hinge cut out on the door FRAME in exactly the right position, to match the door?
@dwarden33 жыл бұрын
I use a tape measure, a sharp pencil, and a router. Measure from top inside of jamb to where ever you want your hinge to be( add 1/8" for door clearance), mark it, then trace out the shape of hinge. Use the router resting on the door stop and free hand cut the trace out. Remember to off set away from the stop enough to clear for hinge swing. Practice on a piece of scrap a few times and it will be easy after that.

For most part video was good even though your wrist was in the way at first when you began to router out hinge area though did get it how to go about routing out the area using the tool. As for the plastic piece you mentioned you wish could been metal maybe ryobi wanted to use plastic stead of metal hold down screw being would mar the project so they decided plastic was better to use but if person wanted metal they could go to hardware store buy right size screw even may have a specialty screw with the T look or create one by drilling hole through the end of a square headed screw afixing a small metal dowell through the head of metal screw to look like the plastic one on the hinge tool just a thought only problem is that metal screw working in plastic would eventually wear plastic threads down faster then plastic with plastic. Nevertheless great video thanks for the demo👍

As a professional finish carpenter this Ryobi "jig" is super cute. To the point I'd be embarrassed to even bring this to a job... I like the grey plastic knob and the plastic rails.. wreaks of quality.. Your depth isn't correct either, the hinge is proud of the door. If you're wanting square corners in a mortise you use a corner chisel.. not fiddling with plastic pieces. 1 false move, knick the plastic and this jig is junk. You can make these out of plywood pretty easily too. I dunno man if you used my Bosch you'd laugh at this Ryobi. The Bosch is the last quality built jig you cannot buy anymore. Milwaukee had a decent one but the nails are junk. The Bosch is discontinued because apparently people don't machine doors anymore. Good video man.
