the question is.. is Ryzen 7000 worth it over 13th gen if Ryzen 7000 in general runs so hot despite the low TDP on non-x versions.. Not lots of MB options for ITX on either side and especially the AM5-ITX mb seems riddled with issues unless you buy the most expensive ASUS B650E-I.. Too bad the non-x versions weren't tested..

Incredibly informative and a top notch video. This has really help shape up future builds when I recycle the current parts on AM4 and AM5. In regards to build planning, I would say everyone should be very meticulous about it especially pricing and trend anaylsis (yes it sounds fancy - however, we all do it every day especially grocery shopping) as people would save a tonne of money.

I have recently switched my focus to primarily SFF builds so thank you for this video. Coincidentally, I am patiently waiting for the N-ATX and P-ATX cases to go back on sale. I also like how you touched on PBO Curve Optimiser. Optimum Tech did a very detailed video on it titled 'Ryzen 5000 Undervolting with PBO2 - Absolutely Worth Doing'. A big tip in that video which helped me with my Zen 3 builds was that some Asus BIOS settings have an extra setting called 'PBO Limits'. If that setting is there for a particular motherboard (noted the one in the video does not have this), it needs to be disabled for the undervolted curve to have the desired effect.

Thanks Mike I love the deep dive into small form factor coolers definitely throws a wrench in the works for the future of this form factor to some degree. For a small period of time the highest performance gear was useable in the smallest footprint just as that was developing into the mainstream production of itx cases we might see this era coming to an end... at least for a generation or two. I imagine that out of case radiators are going to be more common in the forum posts for a little while. My only hope is that somehow this results in itx cases with 360 aio compatibility outside of that one sliger case this area feels rather unoptimized in the current market. I've done some calculations and with the modern size of gpu coolers almost matching up to 360 rads it should be possible within 18 liters of volume and no need for a riser cable. I haven't modeled anything though.

I' using a 7600 (yes, this is the 7600 with 65W TDP) with AXP120-x67. This fan is similar to the Scythe Big Shuriken 3B, using 6 heat pipes and a 12-inch fan. I found that it was unable to suppress the 7600 under the stock setting of the CPU with all cores and full load. The temperature soared to 95 degrees and the CPU frequency could only reach about 4.9G. When playing games, it can often reach 70-80 degrees or even 90 degrees, and the CPU utilization is only 15%-25%. I adjusted the PBO -40 optimized voltage curve (yes, this CPU is of good quality), adjusted the SOC voltage -0.025 and set the temperature limit to 83 degrees. Only then can the temperature be acceptable(60-70, most of time less 80 degree) in daily games. The good news is that I released the PBO freq up to 200MHZ, so it's single core usually can reach 5.3G in daily usage. The new generation of Ryzen 7000 is really hot. This is already the lowest-end CPU in the series, but still.

@@GSP-76regular 120 fan swap originally gave me 3C and I got another 2 or so from the noctua swap. Use that nice soft cell foam from another electronics packaging and cut out the frame shape for a 120mm fan. Then cut out the middle and you have a nice fan gasket for the back exhaust 120mm. That dropped temps the most for me. Turned 100c under load to 92 max. (Referring to my loque case)

I didn't go with AMD this upgrade cycle becaues of lower core counts and higher entry cost, so I have an i5-13600k, but I knew either way that the thermals wouldn't really be an issue for either side The fact that we have BIOS's that make undervolting / power limiting so easy means that no matter what, we won't burn up our hardware. Realistically, for gaming work loads, there's just no performance impact at all.

Too be fail the L9A is running into a physics limit, it's just so small that it does not have the surface area or air flow to absorb and dissipate the heat. The cooling issues are compounded by the extra thick IHS on the 7000 series. A better option would be the L9x65 or L9x65 SE-AM4. It's still low profile at 65mm but has more mass to soak up the heat with.

Nice visuals graphs, good topic, well done. On a sidenote - probably a lot of small form factor cases need a rework considering recent trends in power targets and GPU sizes. They were made for a different world. So a different CPU cooling along the way could be an option. Also those smallest air coolers weren't 100% great a few years ago either. So there's that.
@hwi7114
@hwi7114 Жыл бұрын
Disagree on the smallest coolers not being great a few years ago, you just need to know what they are designed for. In small cases with cooler height limits under 40 mm there are only a few options on the market and the NH-L9 works no problem with a 12400 or 5600X. Obviously it isn't going to cool a 5900X or 12900K and it wasn't designed to do so. Ryzen 7000 just runs exceptionally warm and doesn't really have a SKU that works well with such small coolers, at least so far.
@vensroofcat6415
@vensroofcat6415 Жыл бұрын
@@hwi7114 "only a few options on the market" doesn't mean something is great. They have been very limited in what they can cool all along. To avoid further confusion my current PC runs with NH-U12A. I do like air cooling and consider Noctua NH-L9 and the two others quality products. But none of them is great at cooling. Rather "limited". My main point - many sff cases are designed for those tiny things or aio. In the way stuff is arranged within. Which may need to change. Or not. Because in my world 50mm air cooler clearance sounds ~nonexistent. More so with 250W CPUs. And yes, I do know underV exists.

Eco mode kind of chokes the CPU. You should absolutely consider a negative PBO offset with a manual power limit of 70-90 watts. PBO will optimise the v-f curve and give better performance, while the power limit will bring it back down to reasonable temperatures. Best of both worlds.

You can also go lower than -10. Ryzen master has a tester in it that will give you the value your chip can handle. It's not always perfect but it's a good starting point. Personally, just turn it all the way down to -30 and see if your computer crashes at idle (not under load), some chips can handle it just fine. If it does crash then dial it back little by little until you hit that sweet spot. For instance my 5700x can do a -21 all core offset so it runs cooler and the clock speeds hit 4850mhz which is 150 mhz higher than stock.

For some of them, yes, it's possible, but that's *not* guaranteed when you buy the CPU. You have to buy it to find out. That's why it's called the "silicon lottery." You were lucky when you got your 5600X. If you got another 5600X or other Zen 3 CPU, it might or might not run stable with a CO offset of -30. If you get a Zen 4 CPU, the same thing applies. If you're lucky, it'll run stable at -30. If you're *really* unlucky, it might not even run stable at -10. You won't know until you buy the processor and try undervolting it.

@@SwiftArrowMCSGPvP Full sized radiator wont fit (possibly with slim fans doubt it though). I'm actually using the AX90-x47 right now and not very comfortable with it. Had to limit power just to get idle temps below 50c. Probably gonna get the SilverStone low profile AIO that I've seen people use on this case.

@@rickyism1576 I’ve seen a fee builds using the coolermaster atmos 240 aio as its a little slimmer and that fits so that could be an option for you? Also are u struggling to keep in under 50 with the 7700x or 7800x3d?

I dont have SFF but I just wanted a smaller air cooler cause the towers are so big blocking everything lol Thermalright axp90-x53 copper edition looks awesome and works great with my 7600x and modern mid tower case

Sweet! Thanks for your tests. Seems like the AK400 or Assassin King120 should be perfectly fine or even better than these small low profile cooler then.

I'm using the Sliger Console with the Thermalright AXP90-X53, NF-A12x25 PWM chromax.black.swap, and 7700X with a -30 offset. Runs like a dream. Unfortunately the ID Cooling IS-55 doesnt fit because the edge collides with the bottom case lip.

Interesting. Can you do the same test but with an Artic Freezer 120 AIO II? And yes, can you use an AMD GPU? There are people like me that will never buy a Nvidia GPU, so we will like to see that.

I’ve seen you guys cover ITX coolers but are you ever gonna cover the Thermalright AXP 120 revisions? Would love to see you guys compare the copper one you guys regularly use, the new graphite covered one vs the other itx coolers you guys use.

I'm currently running a 7700X on a PBO offset of -30. The plan was to put it into that NZXT N1 that I still have sitting around once the 3D V-Cache CPUs release but I honestly never even thought about the ITX thermals in that plan... Think that puny 140mm AIO will be able to handle it? I can't test it since I don't have the mainboard for it yet.

Yeah it will be fine, especially at -30. BUT you should absolutely consider putting a power limit on it as well. PBO -30 with a PL of 80w will give you the same performance as stock, but with MUCH lower temperatures and power draw. Watch Optimum Tech's video on PBO. Maybe even go 70w. The silicon is great but AMD fucked up the stock v-f curve.

This was a great eye opener as I only have low profile coolers like the Shuriken and so far is does extremely well with a 5900x as long as there is some active air pulling the heat out the case. Man when will they release the N-ATX again?

Good video but not sure why you didn't include Big Shuriken data for the eco mode testing since it seemed to perform the best in every other segment.
