I showed a work colleague parts 1 and 2 last night and he's going to build a gaming/streaming Ryzen 5 PC for his son using your guide and has gone from 0 knowledge to feeling confident he could do it with relative ease. It was very pleasing to bring someone into the PC gaming/building community and thanks mostly go to your presentation style and assumption of 0 previous experience. The case you chose accepts even the biggest GPUs so the upgrade path is wide open for this Ryzen build, be it into 3rd (or 4th if they make them) Ryzen 7 CPUs along with almost any GPU. A rear-mounted push/pull 120mm water cooler could be used too. As the price of parts drop in time, this PC can offer potentially amazing performance without the need to buy a new case or mobo. It's the potential that this build offers which is what excites me. Thanks for the content and keep up the good work :)

@@ExplainingComputers I’ve got the following system; 1600 Ryzen, 16GB DDR 3000, GTX 1060 6GB. Everything is overclocked to Ryzen 1 expectations (so about 4.1mhz on all cores), although I have a number of profiles I run (so silent profiles for some work, and noisy where I need the system to sweat). There’s a 250GB NVME, 1TB Samsung SSD, 1TB HDD, 4TB HDD. The cooling is one 120mm case fan, 4 pin so only runs when needed. The fans that came with the graphics card, and 240mm AIO water cooling for the CPU. The only time I really hear the fans was last summer during the heat wave and it runs 24/7. I took some time with cable management but it certainly could be better, and the case will take full ATX so it is big but really I have never needed to worry about cooling under real life use. I’m learning the same with ITX builds, it is how you approach the cooling rather than throwing lots of cooling at it. Cleverer people than me build amazing ITX cases that can run i7Ks and 2080s through careful design

Great video, as always! After fitting the graphics card, I think there should be a warning for new builders to change the graphics cable from motherboard to graphics card. It's a common mistake for new builders.

In the days of the i486 CPU motherboard I preferred a plug in graphics card. Then motherboard manufacturers/developers began the graphics processing unit on the motherboard. This improved graphics but if improved graphics were desired an external graphics board was required to be installed. It wasn't long before the external GPU's out priced the motherboard/CPU combination. For me, its been 6 years since I've built any new equipment. If I were to build something new I would build something similar to what you have built Chris. Great additional to an already great build.

I’ve built quite a few computers over the years but prior to last year I hadn’t built a system for the past 15+ years so a lot had changed. I went with a Ryzen 5 for upgradability and fair performance and haven’t regretted it. My benchmark scores are slightly lower than this system but that’s partly because I only went with a GTX 1050, and my RAM score is also slightly lower. But great videos, spurring my on to get on with upgrading my system (though I might wait until 3rd generation Ryzen is released). Like that you don’t make it seem daunting and complicated. Building your own system can have some great advantages, such as getting exactly what you want, maximising your capital and not least it can make it easier upgrading later on. Keep up the excellent work and variety of your videos! They inspire, inform and entertain.

My Son used this card in his build. Says it's quite snappy. B250M Pro VDH No Over clocking at this time. He says the Gaming AP had conflicts and went back to the resident MSI Control software. Thank You again Sir ! As always, More Good Stuff.

Your build series has prompted me to contemplate my options for an upgrade I am planning later this year. I think I'll wait at least for the next generartion ryzen processors to come out, it looks like the 3300G will be a great value APU. But then again, my computer is so old that even the cheap Athlon 200GE would be a significant improvement.

Thanks for your informative series on building a Ryzen-based Desktop. My wife's laptop broke down last week. Not wanting to spend too much on a new one, we opted for a Ryzen-based laptop and we are very happy so far with the performance vs price value. Should we have gone the Intel route, we would have gotten only a Celeron for the same price.

Just a quick note on the GeForce Experience, if you don't do any gaming then absolutely correct - mostly bloatware and you likely won't want it. *However* if you do game, GeForce experience has "Shadow Play" built in which will allow you to hit a hot key and recall your last 1-20 minutes of gameplay (preset time limit) and save that to a video file with very little performance hit. It also includes things like FPS counter overlays and will alert you and install for you, the latest drivers when they are available. It also has features like analysing your system for a library of partnered games and will preset settings for you based on whether you want maximum graphics or good performance etc.

Well, my build cost came out to a little over $900 US. But I upped RAM from 8GB to 32GB, increased SSD storage from 128GB to 1TB, and upscaled the CPU to an AMD Ryzen 5 2600 (which cost $65 more than the AMD Ryzen 3 2200G). Otherwise I hewed close to the build that's been described other than substituting for products (e.g., the case) more readily available in the US - relative to the UK.

First I wanted to use the Ryzen 3 2200G CPU for graphics, then dumped that one and got a Ryzen 5 2600X and a Radeon RX 570 graphics card. That setup works perfectly fine for GTA V as example. Now I'm tempted to get get a further upgrade to a similiar card of the GTX 1050 Ti after I installed further 16GB to the already existing 16GB of RAM. I got to say I'm really happy with my current setup and torture tested it with lots of power hungry programs and there's just so much reserve it just won't show any sign of weakness. My compliment. You made me buy and build a PC that fires on all cylinders with sheer endless power and the possibility to do future upgrades. It's a beast of a machine!

Don't replace the RX570 with a 1030Ti as that is a solid downgrade, the 570 should be compared with the 1060- and even there the CUDA cores are main discussion point, do you need them.

PhysX is used in many modern games and has been since the Xbox 360 era. For example, Final Fanasy 15 uses it. You probably should have installed that.

I've recently built my own ryzan 5 pc. I've gone for a sapphire rx570 nitro+ 4gb. Found a really good deal found the card for £125 new. I was originally looking at the 1050ti but though research I discovered that editing software I would be using runs better with AMD cards.

@Max Pain I have the 100 6GB for just over a year, I only treat it as a 1080p card and to be honest, for the gaming I do it is enough, what you get over the 1050ti is more GDPR and about 30% performance improvement- mainly though you get the same resolution but higher details. Some of the 1050Ti are actually very good, I use them in ITX systems because they can run passive or without a 6 pin. Some of the passive versions have quite a lot of over clock headroom, about 15%. That said they are in cases of my own design that use the case as the heatsink for the whole system- doing that you can use the 200GE (I c 't get the better models like they can in the EU/far East) passive and 1050ti passive. It isn't the cheapest way to build the system, because of the Dc/DC PSU and case (which is all 3mm aluminium or thicker) but it is silent. Runs max (under testing) of 80C)

@Max Pain I agree, I don't game above 1080p (well I have a 4K TV but that only does 30 frames a second) and so the 1600 6GB still works there- and like I say if you shop carefully they can be had for £160. It depends on stocking levels, for example I think CCL have the R1600 for £7 more than the 1600X despite the later being the better CPU. Keeping your eyes open you can get bargains unless you want a very specific model of graphics card. For example the Palit 1050ti Passive is still selling at £150 but you could spend £20 less for a card that has quite fans- they won't even run unless gaming. Even second hand the Palit goes for £100 pretty much, whereas another choice of 1050Ti would be £75 to £80. By Christmass I think the 1050Ti will be the graphics adaptor that the 1030 was- not much good for gaming but great paired with an Intel chip or AMD non-APU for productivity. Which is why I probably wouldn't buy one now, wait and see what happens because they are only getting cheaper- the 1060 3GB is really cheap now but games are asking for 3GB GDDR so you are right on the limit. The 6GB gives headroom (it'll be a while before we need 6GB) but the technology can't escape its age.

I'm not quite sold on the LED lighting yet but I do like the way the machine will look when finished. Just one thing: Personally, I would spend some extra money on a proper soundcard. I know that a lot of people will be content with the built-in one but I do occasionally work with MIDI (both composing and old games) so I'd probably spend some money on an AE-5 from Creative. That will probably push it towards $700 but it will be worth it for some people. In addition, the AE-5 actually has LEDs itself so it would fit nicely with the rest of the hardware.

Then in the summer if I feel the CPU is holding it back, I can put the next generation of Ryzen chip inside.

Any decent video card is a very good upgrade to a computer with integrated graphics. Video cards reduce your system memory utilization (if the graphics cars has on board memory dedicated to the GPU, which in the case of this video it does.) It also reduces load on your CPU since the CPU isn't doing the GPUs job anymore. Even if you don't game, slapping a 1050 or better in your PC is a nice way to make it a bit better overall. My RAM utilization at idle dropped for 3 ish GB to low 2s consistently after a 1050 install and my CPU utilization hangs around in the single digit percents or basically 0 at idle with task manager running. Don't forget to install your drivers though, if no disk is given you can pick them up on the manufacturers website. Nvidia has drivers for almost every card they ever made. Plus these cards support multi monitor display set ups. Nvidia cards even the 1050 can support 3 displays. Newer cards can support 4.

Hi Chris, it's me again, Tom from the US. I am still working on arranging my now restored system and I only have a few minutes here and there to it. I managed with corporate to "drop sync" and formatted both my new HD and my older HD. In my own defense, I was bone tired and I should have put the imaging on hold when I feeling so tired but I wanted to be up and operational ASAP so ..... Haste not only makes waste but a lot of profits for the data restoration markets. On another thread, I pulled another computer out of my basement and tried to power it up and I managed to let the smoke out of my power supply. I don't remember this pc giving me trouble before or even when it was the last run so now I have a new power supply of twice the power rating sitting in the chassis. The next time I'm going to be wide awake and well rested and have the phones turned off before I try it again. Just curiously, did you ever get the chance to open that file that I sent you? I'm just curious about your reaction. Be well. Tom

Whenever I change out videocards, I pre-download the drivers for the new card before swapping. Saves time when/if the card isn't recognized after installing that the drivers are already available. Plus most drivers come on CD and most PC's don't have CD drives.

I just upgraded FROM the 1050 ti, I had it for 2 years. I'd suggest waiting for a 1660 or 1650ti to release before jumping on the 1050ti, they'll be listed for around the same price and bring a 50-70% performance bump for the same $$

@1:09 shows the "Typical" power draw, whatever that is. The maximum power draw would be useful to know when deciding what PSU to get. Also, the idle power draw (when not processing 3D graphics) would be of interest, since a card that draws a lot of power for 2D graphics will cost more to use over it's lifespan.

Some of that data is quite hard to get hold of (the 2D stuff) but in general all cards will be using very little power under 2D.. Individual reviews on the internet will give you the information. For example I jsut bought a passive cooled Palit 1050Ti. TDP rated 75 watt. Looking at various reviews (in the past, I have bought a few) in real life it is 68w under maximum pressure (about 75c). 30 something in mixed load and about 20W in pure 2D. If I only wanted 2D though I|'d use Intel graphics or the APU graphics. You don't need a graphics card. A lot of 1050ti would be about the same even with active cooling if the vans spin down- most of the time the fans aren't being used and will only kick in under heavy/gaming load. If you want to work out what PSU, and you don't like the maths, then the website uk.pcpartpicker.com/ will let you build a system and will indicate the power requirements. People always think they need more than they do in my experience.

If you are planning to do renders with Blender, the Nvidia cards are the ones to consider since they support CUDA which Blender uses for GPU rendering (faster than CPU rendering).

3:33 That GC don't mess around...looks like one I'll look into at some point. 18:06 Yeah, like pressing the same button on a hairdryer, it makes it much louder, lolz I am curious if anything bad would happen if the GC was installed and then the old drivers removed, though. It also appears that the card doesn't necessarily support multiple monitors, something I've needed myself because it sucks to be forced into fullscreen gaming, but also having a chat going on simultaneously and having to Alt+Tab to switch between them. A second monitor would help greatly with this.

Chris, I love your videos and have been watching them for over a year. I was particularly interested in this one because you showed how to install a discrete graphics card and get the drivers for it. However, you only showed us Windows. PLEASE do another video where you show us how to do it in Linux. I am a Linux convert and love playing with Linux, but find installing and updating drivers to be very difficult.

its funny you say that's a heavy card, i have the zotac 1050 ti and the first thing i said is its so light, but I was comparing it to my old EVGA GTX 660 sc.

After Mr screwdriver assisted you, you past off a comment snapped into place at the bottom, but if you're building a computer for the first time that may not be enough of a mention. Just thought I'd give you a heads up from the future, for your future builds....

I went with a Ryzen 5 2400G with its onboard Vega 11 graphics in my latest build as I won't be using it for heavy gaming, just video capture & encoding. It should be at least twice as fast than my old graphics card while using 180 watts less power!

Not installing GeForce Experience is okay. You just need to update the driver manually then but not installing PhysX is just a bad idea. The first game that installs it will install some old version from maybe 2009 and then the physics simulation could have sever bugs. And if you zoom in more I can still read it when I go outside and cross the street. Make this stuff smaller my eyes hurt.

@@GigaSyntax it's 20% to literally twice as fast depending on the game. Way better deal if you have the PSU to go with it. The only time when the x50/xx50 series from either brand is even an option is when you have a bad PSU

Could have kept the same video drivers with the RX570. But at 125W it would have made the 550W PSU run at a high percentage of it's rated output. By the numbers it should work fine but in the real world?

Cool build, but I would've done a ryzen 2600 with an rx 570/580/gtx1060, as well as 3200+ memory. Doesn't cost that much more, and has significant performance increase. I would use a 2200/2400g in a htpc, though, so you can always swap out that cpu to do that. too bad you didn't get the 1050ti low profile, would be nice as htpc card, too, for hardcore madvr rendering :p

What a great series! I love the way you meticulously go through everything step by step. I have followed your build with a few differences: I bought the B450M DSH3 motherboad with the Ryzen 5 2400G chip. Everything seemed to be going well, but I am frequently getting the BSOD with a VIDEO TDR FAILURE error. Have you ever experienced this?

Sorry to hear that you are having BSOD problems. I have not experienced the Video TDR failure issue, but have heard of it. I would suggest reinstalling your video (motherboard) drivers: maybe do an uninstall and reinstall in the AMD software, and that might fix it. Maybe before that, try removing and reinstalling your RAM, just in case that is causing the issue. Good luck! :)

The RAM slot used should not cause this type of issue: if the PC requires the RAM in particular slots, it will either work or not work. Adding a graphics card may solve the issue, as you will be using completely different graphics hardware and drivers. The pending April Windows 10 update may also solve it. This kind of problem is infuriating I know.

i love how much power computer processors and graphic cards use these days they go to such a low power state when not doing much my 1060 is barely using any thing while watching youtube and web browsing fans completely off for both but when running high demanding games then they up what they need in a instant :) geforce experience i wouldnt have it as well better to manually set your nvidia settings to max performance for your games and set up each game using the in game settings ive had all sorts of strange things happen letting that set my games up so stopped using it

Hmmm... AMD open-source drivers are very good, and yes, Nvidia's OK when you've got something with some proprietary stuff preinstalled, but I'd opt for AMD 99% of the time

Gaming on Linux with an AMD GPU has made quality of life so much better than with an Nvidia GPU. As everyone says, "It just works™." Steam's Proton makes running most Windows only games fairly simple, and so long as your distro has current drivers, running non Steam Windows games through wine-staging isn't too painful.

MSI are awesome. Glad you avoided the AMD RX series cards. I've got a brand new one sitting on my shelf I've had nothing but issues with. I kept it because one day I will get it to work right (tell future me maybe AMD drivers will improve). But as for past and present me I can't make it work right with games or any load.

I get it that you need cuda cores but right now rx570 4gb is 150€ for the base model, thats a good price, also i recommend rx vega 56, its hell of a card, for 300€ brand new you can do anything your heart content, vega 56 renders csgo maps like a charm
