US blocked the sales of PATRIOT system, if you were turkey, what would you do? Also, we don't actually know how many ATACM were fired at this S400 battery, and any air defense can be overwhelmed if you fire enough missiles at it.

@@bigbigmurphy The story I read was that Turkey was interested in U.S. Patriots and also the European SAMP/T air defense systems BUT Turkey was also demanding a lot of tech transfer as well as production transfer because it was interested in eventually developing its own surface-to-air defense systems. Both the U.S. and the EU turned down the idea of extensive tech and production transfer.

Why would China, India and Turkey by a Toyota land cruiser when they could buy a Lada? India has got to wonder how useful their billion dollar S-400 batteries will be against Chinese or Pakistani attacks using missiles as primitive as Atacms. I get why they don't want to be dependent on US arms, but it seems like they would be better served by an IRIS/Patriot system as in the EU's Sky Shield system. I just don't see how India would ever do it so long as the US is dependent on Pakistan to achieve other US goals. OTOH- they bought S-400 from Russia who is also selling to their nemesis China. That chummy relationship between XI and Putin has to give them pause. It would be interesting to know how many, if any atacms missiles were intercepted.

Using some geometry and propellers instead of jet propulsion, you can fly towards a radar with a low enough closure rate that it gets rejected by Doppler filtering. Basically fly towards a radar, you're moving fast and get flagged as an aircraft. Zig zag your way in, and your closure rate makes your speed appear slow like a bird and you get filtered out.

Agreed. People are focused on the s-400 failure, but the key failure is the Russian inability to prevent being surveilled. As with the loss of the patriot launch vehicle in march, the key advantage is that there was a drone present to identify the target. Looking at this video, the drone operator is relentlessly keeping the S-400 control vehicle in its cross hairs, which is a little confusing because AFAiK there is no laser designation option for Atacms. It is GPS/ inertial guidance only. So why the heck is going on here- is there some way of providing updated position information to the inflight atacms system? Seems a little far fetched that these old missiles could have been upgraded in time..... Uhm unless that is the real explanation for the atacms and f-16 delays. Who knows.

Ok here are the experts: is this system the one that is supposed to intercept the US-Abomb missils, if they should come? I start to wonder if the Russia a-bomb missiles are as much as a failure as this system. I guess in a real atomic war, the US would intercept some, but not all of the Russian a-bombs. And Russia would intercept none of the US (based on this system) while some of their own missiles will propably fail and detonate on ground or in Russian airspace.

A friendly reminder to any botskis here. These ATACMS are the oldest in existence to the point of being post expiration. Not only are these individual missiles essentially considered defunct but even the ATACMS as a design are as well as they are to be replaced by PRSMS which are abundantly more capable. So unless they invest in trebuchets this is as low tech as they get and it is absolutely utterly undoubtedly stomping your very best air defense. What I would give to see your alleged air defense face true shock and awe only to allow a dozen or so of old B52s rumble over your heads 1950s style. The song when the man comes to town, comes to mind.

A 21 Round Volley from Katyusha's can destroy an Iron Dome, S-400, or Patriot. That's called, "Overwhelming s system," in which you fire as many projectiles as the enemy has interceptors, +1 extra to destroy the launcher. It's weird all of you experts don't recognize that's what's going on in the footage. S-400 wouldn't be getting deployed if it had a 100% failure rate, because the S-300 is cheaper, and easier to mass produce. Reminds me of the videos where Jihadists fire hundreds of missiles at US Drones only to accidentally knock one out of the sky, but they release footage saying, "1 missile took down US Drone." These really do not have a Western analog. Western air defenses stop incoming missles with other missles. This Russian technique is 100% effective. No ATACMS survived.

Not to mention that the drone is just hanging out within eyeshot and not getting addressed. Absolutely wild.

You know what's funny? Back when russia started its genocidal war of aggression in Ukraine and Sweden/Finland announced their willingness to join NATO, Solovyov had a meltdown in his show, where he announced that russia could very easily reverse the problem of the Baltics becoming a NATO inland sea by invading Gotland and placing an S-400 battery there. He said that with that alone, they could perfectly enforce no-fly zones for NATO and have a strongpoint with which to control all of the Baltics. Yes. With one S-400 battery. _Hilarious._

ridiculous how close to the time of impact they tried to intercept and that an enemy observerdrone can hang around such an airdefense array .. seems those russian radars cant pick anything up on larger ranges which isnt at least the size of an airliner

Wait, wait, are the Russian trolls already here trying to explain that this is the way it's supposed to work and it was all part of an elaborate plan?

Just seen an auction close on eBay for a S-400/S-300 complete system which failed to attach any bids…

If it's working and it's actually in Russia, I would bid, just so they don't have it anymore. It might be crap against drones or ATACAMS but it can still hit an F-16 on a bad day
