S.CARMAN: WHAT IS A "FIGHTER"?

This video is about what a "fighter" is as opposed to a "Boxer" or "wrestler" etc. The sport of boxing has been hurt by what I see as a soft approach to the sport, a reflection of what society is currently. Today's average male boxing fan looks the part, but mentally lacks the fortitude to engage in what he claims to know about. I make no secret of this nor my disdain for it. As a former scout and talent developer for a MMA promotional firm, I can say the hardest people to match up were HEAVYWEIGHTS! Why? Because they spent almost their entire life walking around without having to prove themselves against other heavyweights. Some people are fighters and others merely compete with the odds in their favor. The last group should never be mistaken for the first.

I wholeheartedly agree with your point about violence and competition with yourself and others. Over the last few decades or so I feel that a huge misconception has arisen at least in the west concerning the ideas of combat and competition. Violence is part of not just human but all nature and even amongst animals it's instinct to play fight as practice for real life. Violence is just like anything else, a tool and it can be used for both good an bad things, if channeled constructively it can be a force for positivity.

Of course the down side to all this is the person who is a natural "fighter", but without talent or even intelligence. I've seen many people throw themselves into the meat grinder again and again and again. These are people who can only fight a war of attrition, achieving one Pyrrhic victory after another. I knew one guy who would always bloody himself severely in sparring because he had no time for defense. Then he would walk around for days with his bloody shirt on waiting for someone to ask him about it. I'm sure you agree Sayf that there are plenty of coaches and promoters who will gladly allow these people to destroy themselves. Even the talented ones suffer. I always think of Canadian boxer Shawn O'Sullivan, who had skills, certainly, but I also think his fighting spirit got him into the health trouble he has today. I think it's great to foster and encourage strong fighting spirit in boxers, but I think the coaches need to step up too! They can't forget that it's their job to know where the line is.

Love your video's sir ! Love your philosophy about boxing and fighting. You remind me of the older coaches at the gym I grew up in . Broadway Gym in south Los Angeles . There was a lot of guys from back east that. was there . They don't make them like that no more . You are the last of a dying breed . Everyone gives me hell because Holyfield is my favorite boxer.They are like this guy is better or he lost too much.While he was highly skilled its his fighting heart that I respect. I am not saying he is the best "that's Ali imo" I am saying he is my favorite boxer.because he was a fighter! I meet him one time and he is also a very honorable man. Few boxers are fighters today like Pac I respect him in the same way.This is the difference between people who grew up in the golden age of boxing compared to today.Its just that they don't know any better...I got my son into boxing he asked me why do Mexicans look like they fight harder.I said because they are fighters and its their tradition.I showed him some old videos of Haggler,Hearns,Duran etc and I said back then many of them fought like this. How could GGG have fought Ward when Ward didnt want the fight ? ? His team is on film saying 2-3 tune ups before GGG or Kovalev n hes only had 1 as of now , then when GGG offered Ward the fight at 164 50-50 on the money Ward wouldnt even enter into negotiations , so how could GGG force Ward to take the fight if Ward didnt want it? Ward ducked Bute , Ward ducked Degale who GGG is in talks with right now to fight in Dec. of this year in the UK (Degales backyard) , Ward gave up his WBC title to not have to fight Dirrell his mandatory ...Ward talks a good game but has a history of ducking , Ward also said he wanted to fight Froch in a rematch in Frochs backyard n then froch said OK lets do it n then Ward said nevermind i dont want to fight in the UK im scared i will get robbed ... if GGG isnt a fighter then clearly Ward is much less of a fighter ... Manny is hands down the best boxer of his era IMO as well n a fighter
