I'm so old that in 1991 I was still carrying a nickel plated Colt's Trooper chambered in .38/.357 (but restricted by town and department policy to 158grn SWCHP +Ps)….Even though we did transition to Ruger semiautos in .45ACP later on, SIGs in .45ACP later still, and finally not long before I retired, S&W M&Ps also in .45ACP. Today my preferred concealed carry pistols are a much loved S&W 4053 (with "dead" night sights) and two spare magazines for winter carry and a Taurus G2C in 9mm (since I could not find one in .40S&W anywhere) and two spare magazines for "warm weather" carry here in South Carolina.....Though I am looking really, really hard at a Charter Arms "Classic Bulldog" in .44Spl which would take me back to the 1970s when I started my career...Excellent video as usual! Keep up the great work!

@@hrfunk In 2012 I needed to sell my small collection of hand and long guns to afford the move to the People's Republic of Maryland so that I could care for The Love of My Life who was recovering from a rare form of cancer. The ONLY firearm I did not sell was my 4053 and it's two spare magazines. My 4053 serves, to this day, as our "bed side" home defense pistol backed up by a 00 buck loaded Mossberg 500A fitted with the "Police/Riot" barrel (very, very similar to the Mossberg we carried in our patrol cars and that we trained with all those years ago). If I had to sell my current small collection of hand and long arms I would hold on, tightly, too would be my 4053 and, if at all possible, my 500A. By the way, The Love of My Life became The Lovely Bride in late 2012 and puts up with me to this day...

To confirm what you mentioned: Yes, the standard-issue sidearm of the RCMP is the 5946. i.e., 4" all-stainless, DAO, 15lb-long-trigger, big, honking brick of a gun. Complete with Mag disconnect, and second-strike capability. There's rumours flying around of a replacement, but those rumours having been flying around since approximately 1994 when the first units were issued, replacing the Model 10. My wife bought me a S&W 4586 that was formally used by the Elgin PD, (Illinois?) (she also got me a WASR-10 AK-47) for my first birthday, that we were married. Yes, I married the most amazing woman on the planet. I have no question about that. I always wondered what the structural difference was between a regular 4506 and the DA only 4586. It makes sense though that the slide and frame are slightly "longer" (for lack of a better description) in the back. I worked at the shop she bought both the AK, and the S&W at. We had a bunch of the 4586's, and a bunch of H&K USP 40 cal. pistols. Both groups were police trade in guns. She let me choose. I choose the 4586 more because I wanted a 45 ACP pistol at the time, and 40 S&W had fallen out of favor. Since I knew she was going to get that pistol for my birthday, she got the AK to surprise me. The guys I worked with made sure to pick a nice AK for her. Since some of those WASR-10's can have really crooked front sights, and other issues. Century Arms didn't always have the greatest QC. Smith & Wesson on the other hand was fine. Other than one of the magazines ( I got 3 with the gun) broke after I had it for a few years. The plastic bottom plate cracked. I tried glue but it wouldn't hold. I finally made a new piece out of metal from a soup can. 🤪 In the meantime I ordered a magazine from ProMag (they are the only aftermarket company making magazines for that pistol) to replace it. Thankfully I was able to fix it. The little I have used the ProMag magazine it has worked fine though despite their reputation.

on the technical side, SW seemed to be on the top of their game back in the days. An SSV version with the full frame reminds me of the Glock 45 and 19x concept and the SIG P320 Carry and the FN 509.. Looks like there is a tremendous value for LEO and military personnel to have a shorter slide to facilitate inside the vehicle carry without interfering with seats and surroundings, yet a full grip will allow higher capacity, easier reach for the gun and more control during shooting.. Kudos to SW for inventing the Glock 45 concept some 30 years ago..

I bring them out of my safe and showcase them as art when family and friends come over. They make great conversation pieces. As I'm sure you're aware there is much controversy in owning "safe queens" but given the lack of availability of your 5943 will you consider not taking it to the range and shooting it? A pistol like that needs to be protected from extinction. I would love to know your feelings and position of this?

I understand your thoughts, but my feeling is this pistol was built to be used. I just recently picked up a minty looking (appears unfired) S&W Model 3914 DAO that was made on special order for the NYPD. I understand S&W made them on order for several police agencies. It is DAO but does not have the extended rear portion of the slide or the deep set trigger. It DOES have double strike capability and a bobbed hammer, flush with the back of the slide. It has a full DA trigger pull for each shot. It may become my new favorite CC handgun. I need to get it out and make sure it is 100% reliable before I start carrying it.
@hrfunk3 жыл бұрын
Thank you! I feel fortunate to have found the one in the video. By the way, that was the differnce between the regular 3914 and those for the NYPD contract. Essentially, the NYPD pistols had the standard trigger action with the single action hammer notch removed. They did not have the true redesigned DAO action that resulted in a shorter, lighter D/A pull.
@garyK.45ACP3 жыл бұрын
@@hrfunk Looks like a useful modification to lighten the trigger pull, and I am sure it overcame a lot of opposition to the DAO feature. As I understand it, the NYPD and other agencies, wanted to keep the long heavy trigger pull. Hence, S&W made limited runs of the 3914 DAO for specific LE orders.

Just a note: On a bunch of the old S&W pistols, the cops used to grind off a lot of the steel on the slide locks. They stuck out way, way too far. So if you buy a used S&W Gen 1, 2 or 3, and the slide lock is ground down, I'd almost consider that "original" issue; as in, the first thing the owner "orginally" did was grind it down.

Yep. The rear sight is marked with a “16.” Thanks Keith!

hrfunk That’s a blessing! You won’t have to do that yourself! Also noticed sight tool reflection on back sight in your video . Very cool pistol . As in my younger days I had many 4000 and 5000 series pistols, I must of had bad luck , never had one that didn’t malfunction . Never pinned down the cause (Ammo or spring related ) I wasn’t as knowledgeable nor did I have the patience lol!
@peteshour7683 жыл бұрын
Fascinating history for many of the earlier SW Pistols. My guess for the Night Sights after 30 years still illuminating would be the high quality and the Half Life used. Those sights may just go another 30 plus years.

Came across this video on the 5943 ssv I remember l had one buried in my safe, I bought in the 90's I shot it about 20 times I took it out today and my night sites are not working. Do you think there is any way to fix them
@hrfunk Жыл бұрын
Generally speaking, they only last about 10 years. The only thing you can do is replace them. I don’t know if you can still get them from S&W or not.

Perhaps the fact that this pistol looks like it spent most of it's life covered up in the box might be why the sights still glow. If the sights don't see daylight or lighted rooms on a regular basis, perhaps the sights don't burn out via overwork.
@hrfunk4 жыл бұрын
Actually, it appears the sights were replaced rather recently.
@thereturningshadow4 жыл бұрын
@@hrfunk YOu could have mentioned that in the video then instead of playing guessing games on what we think the reason for the sight glow is.

Technically, shouldn’t this be considered a single action only?
@hrfunk4 жыл бұрын
Based upon the most common definition, the trigger performs two functions. It fully cocks the hammer and then releases it. That makes it a double action. There’s no provision for physically cocking the hammer. So that’s where the DAO label comes from. Thanks for watching.

9MM is one of my most favorite cartridges I prefer it to the .40 S&W &.45 ACP. I carry a Springfield XDM in 9mm along with my Ruger PC 9 Carbine rifle. I have killed several coyotes and feral hogs with 9mm 119 grain ball ammo. I like the velocity and penetration of the 9mm from both the 4.5 " barrel and the 16.5 " carbine barrel. Tritium gas vial sights stay around longer than its suggested shelf life of this gas vial .and many years longer than tritium paint .
@hrfunk4 жыл бұрын
Thank you! I discovered there is a date on the rear sight. It's marked "16". So, it appears someone replaced the sights. I'm not complaining. They should now glow for many years to come.
@BLACKRIFLEREVIEWS4 жыл бұрын
@@hrfunk Well you did it again another outstanding review .Many people under estimate the 9mm along with the .22 Long Rifle cartridges both of them are deadly in the hands of a professional who knows what they are capable of doing. I see guys out hog hunting with these large calibers rifles & Pistols OVER KILL ! and I go out with a .22 or a 9mm and take more Feral Wild hogs in one Night or Day than they do in a year. I do like the velocity & penetration of the 9mm when it hits bone its like a hand grenade went off inside the wound channel .I also like the .22 LR at ranges out to 100 yards I have killed many coyotes between 50 and 100 yards with the .22 LR .I find the Ruger 10 / 22 to be good for Hog killing at 60 yards with head shots over a baited area if you use a good cover scent hogs return to feed even with a few dead hogs laying on the ground and the rifle report is not as loud so Hogs come back after 15 minutes to a half hour. Just on 500 acres of land I killed 187 Wild Feral Hogs the majority with the .22 LR & 18 coyotes that just happened along the trails .I have had contracts to eradicate Hogs & Coyotes from Farm lands ,County Land, Golf courses and Airports so that where the .22 LR Shines with no over penetration where a bullet could pass thru and hit another Farm Animal , Aircraft or buildings .In one contract we used crossbows and foot snares to catch and kill them but our work was done without incident.

@@hrfunk I have a set of tritium sight on my AR -15 front sight post from an M-16 A-2 they were surplus and I purchased it in the '90s after the Gulf War and it's still glowing and its been almost 30 years its a Tritium gas filled vile in the post not as bright as it once was but it still can be seen in darkness still glowing just not as bright.

I've recently received some information that confirmed a long-held surmise. In short, S&W was using up an over-run of parts to assemble the SSV pistols. That's why the production numbers were so low.
