I was wondering if there was a difference in pronunciations between wander and wonder. Thank you! My mom was visiting us during a month. We've had wonderful quality time together .
@highlevellistening2 ай бұрын
Good question! Yes, there's a subtle but important difference in pronunciation between wander and wonder! Here’s a quick breakdown: - Wander /ˈwɒn.dər/ The "a" sounds like the short "o" in "hot" or "cot" (IPA: /ɒ/). The pronunciation of "wander" rhymes with "ponder." -Wonder /ˈwʌn.dər/ The "o" sounds like the short "u" in "cup" or "fun" (IPA: /ʌ/). "Wonder" rhymes with "thunder." So, to sum up: - Wander - like "ponder" (with an “ah” sound). - Wonder - like "thunder" (with a more “uh” sound). These subtle vowel sounds make a big difference in distinguishing the two words in spoken English!

I usually find myself going over to my parents house pretty much every sunday to catch up and have lunch together. My dad, who is honestly as really good cook , likez to barbecue outside . Usually our favorite home comforts. Then over a cup of tea. We catch up on each other's lives and share all the lastest local gossip. After breakfast, i lend my dad a hand with a few things around the house, especially as he gets old. If the weather 's nice, we might take a stroll around the park or the neighborhood. And when it 's time to leave, i say my goodbyes and they star planning for the following week.

Hello Kat and Mark! I love your content: I always learn something new, be it a phrasal verb, an expression, or some vocabulary. In particular this time I found interesting that in American accent "wonder/wander" is a minimal pair (and they're so damn close to my ears! 😁), while in British accent they're pretty much homophones. As always good job and thanks so much!

I even had a hard time listening to Mark’s accent! We’ll have to use context clues to help, normally it isn’t a problem but wander around and wonder about can sound very similar

I have a question . Can you explain the meaning of "" Find myself " in the sentence "but I usually find myself going over to my parents house pretty much every Sunday " Can you give any synonym for "find myself doing something""
@highlevellistening8 ай бұрын
That's a great question! "I find myself" often means that I do something almost instinctively, or without thinking about it or planning it too much. Synonyms for "find myself doing something" could be: "end up [doing something]" "habitually [do something]" "tend to [do something]" Hope that helps!

The phrasal verb "pop into" (the supermarket) associates me with something I watched from a TV series. The context is that someone needed to go to the supermarket to get something quickly. I don't quite remember the words the character used, but I think there is a word "run." Could you please tell me what it probably is? There are too many episodes with that TV series and I don't know how to locate that...
@highlevellistening7 ай бұрын
Hello! That's a good question! Another way to say: "visit quickly" is "to run into" For example: "I need to [run into] the supermarket quickly and get some bread." "I'm gonna [run into] the pharmacy and get some eye drops." When someone says this, we expect them to go shopping very quickly! Hopefully that's the phrase you heard or were looking for :)

Hi) Could you explain please if it is polite or at least acceptable to ask "What about you?" Or "And you?" among family/friends
@highlevellistening4 ай бұрын
Yes of course, how about you, what about you “and you?” Are all commonly used to keep the conversation going. We tend to say “and you, what are you doing this week” or “how about you, any weekend plans?” Kind of asking the original question back to the person These are all easy to use with anyone, boss, coworkers, family, friends ☺️

Hi, keep tabs everyone and stalking what is a different please?
@highlevellisteningАй бұрын
Good question - If I "keep tabs on someone." - I keep an eye on them, I make sure they are okay or help them if they need anything. The boss at work will keep tabs on his employees. When your parents get older, you might need to keep tabs on them and make sure they don't have any health issues (that they don't want to talk about). - If you think someone is "stalking you", then you should call the police! To stalk is to follow someone constantly against their will. Stalking someone is a crime and you can arrested for it - if people tell you to leave them alone, you should leave them alone. I think (I hope) in the episode we were using "stalking" as a bit of a joke, and not in the most serious way. I hope that makes sense!
