S1 - Ep 28 - Driving through Bontebok National Park!

We were very lucky that the rain stopped long enough to allow me to pitch the tent and go explore. Red Hartebeest, Bontebok, Spotted Thick-knee and a Toktokkie Beetle is what we saw while driving through Bontebok National Park. The viewpoint at the top of the hill was awesome where we could see the campsite and the route we were going to travel. This park is the smallest National Park in South Africa, but well worth visiting. #DustBugs #adventuretravel #southafrica

Beautiful Bontebok! Didn't know there are so few of them left in the world! Their numbers are similar to the critically endangered yellow crested cockatoo, of which we're privileged to have the world's largest population here in Hong Kong!

Such an interesting and unique ecosystem the rynosterveld and the fynbos are. I can imagine the old days with the bloubok herds roaming through this landscape.

Wow! We've never heard of bluebuck before and were so saddened when we read up that they've been extinct since 1800, long before the quagga even. 😢 What an interesting species they were! You mentioned the vegetation too and that's the one thing we always notice in the Bontebok National Park. So lush and dense and a true feast for the eyes. Thank you for taking a drive through this special place with us! 🦌🚗

@@DustBugsTravel Thanks again for the footage, was great to see how it looks like driving through it, especially for someone like me who is half a world away. It is a unique biome, low shrubs but dense and lush. the only thing I know of that's similar is the highland mugo scrub of Europe, but the fynbos is much richer in species diversity. Up till recently I have not been aware that much about the fynbos (the usual savanna parks with the Rhinos and Buffalo stole the show), but the more I learn about it the better I understand how rich and important the fynbos really is.
