The Railroad Co. software for the signals is pretty cool. I installed the Silver version on my empire about 7 years ago and have experimented with different aspects of it. I found how to do the signals for dark territory when no trains are present.

Thanks for sharing some of the “how to” with the signals. I’ve always been a little hesitant of how to wire up signals but you definitely made it seem easier than I thought. Unfortunately they don’t make very many good signal options in N scale. Thanks again for sharing and Happy New Year! - Steve

@@EvanstonSub thanks Daryl, I’ve been following the listings and will check them out once posted. Honestly I’m looking more for the modern day signal masts for my Cajon Subdivision layout but I don’t think anyone will be making them in N scale anytime soon. Makes me want to change to HO scale if I get the chance. Thanks again. - Steve

I'm not sure, of course, but I have a sneaking suspicion that you are working harder in your retirement than you did when you were employed, Daryl. I think you work harder on your model railroad than if you actually worked on the prototype. In any event, the results speak for themselves and it is shaping up nicely. Thanks for sharing with us. Happy New Year.

Just a note, any turnouts the local crew throws are going to the turnouts for the ground crew we'll have to unlock them before they can throw them. You can simulate that by putting a key switch in line with the circuit and then when the local crew wants to line the turnout it called this factor and asked for permission

You’re making great progress! Glad to see those signals coming alive. One tip - please insulate those soldered connections on the signal wiring! My preference is heat shrink tubing (3/64” works great for those smaller gauge wires). I use a small handheld hot air gun for crafts. You can find all of this on Amazon.

Looks great Daryl. Was the clear coating on the magnet wire scraped off at the end of the wire on the Details West signals? You may want to consider small pins instead of the Cat5 wire, available at Digikey. The solder joint is enclosed by the sleeve of the pin and less prone to damage, shorting or breaking. Also, are you using BDLs for block detection?
@EvanstonSub
@EvanstonSub 3 жыл бұрын
It's was scraped off. However, it's been my experience that when you solder the magnet wire to cat5 wire or whatever else, any coating melts away and electrical conductivity is good. I am using bdl168s. I'll have to try the pins.

Shouldn't all that wiring on top of the bench work be underneath instead? Once scenery is in place, servicing wiring would be much easier underneath.

Yes, servicing the wiring will be more difficult. However, installing the wiring from underneath is also more difficult. All the wiring must be installed while only a tiny fraction, if any, wiring will need to be serviced. So, I installed the wiring on top of the joist.

Nice progress. As I understand your signaling system, I believe you indicated that the dispatcher controls the signal, but the operator needs to throw all the switches. As an operator, for example, if a switch two blocks ahead is reversed, against your train, then the operator would need to normalize that switch before the dispatcher can code a permissive indication? Or in any case, on a mainline run, the operator needs to get in advance of the train, at least one block, assuring proper switch orientation, before the dispatcher can code the signal properly? Or, are you considering the dispatcher will ultimately have control of both the signals and the switches?
@EvanstonSub

Yes, the dispatcher controls the turnouts during an ops session. The local control is for when I operate solo.

@@EvanstonSubThat Ja’Marr Chase/Joe Burrow combination will be terrorizing NFL defences for years to come. Both are in their early 20’s; Chase had his best game of the season by far. I guess I shouldn’t be that hard on Mahomes, he did lead the team down the field with ease pretty much matching the Bengals drive for drive the whole game. It’s just that every time I watch one of your videos and I see that life size Mahomes cutout in the view, I automatically think “hey, how’d the Chiefs do this weekend?” And also right about this time of year I also start dreading how I’m going to get through the off season weeks without football once the playoffs will be over… And oh, I think this is going to be my Packers year provided this COVID bs doesn’t screw things up for them… All the best for the New Year and see ya on the next update video.
