Thank you so much and a belated Merry Christmas to you. It does looks so much better with the arches back up and some fresh paint here and there. The curb appeal has really changed in the last four years. It is hard to believe that we are about to go into the fifth year of this project and there's no end in sight. We will just keep marching forward as the budget allows. 2025 will be a big year for volunteer projects, we have lots planned. I am getting a two-week break. It was very much needed. This old body doesn't bounce back like it used to, but my brain doesn't always accept that fact.

Who knew when I started this journey that I would make so many wonderful friends in the process. Everyone has been so generous with their time and money. And solar panels, too!? The bright, pearly white restored eyebrow arches are glowing as brightly as the Christmas spirit and Janie’s good cheer. So satisfying to see them being put back up and BEFORE the new year. But more than the eyebrow arches, the entire roof is being refined? And it is so beautiful. Like a thoughtfully wrapped present. Glad you guys are taking a break. Knowing the roof is secure will probably make the end-of-year rest that much easier to enjoy. Also. You can tell what a cruise ship nerd I am. I love that I spotted almost immediately a Royal Caribbean ship far off in the distance at 12:14. Man. Really goes to show how close the house is to the Gulf, but also to the port! I know Galveston is essentially a really long peninsula strip. But to see it like this gives better perspective for me. Also shows further just how high up that roof is.

It is a Christmas miracle to get these arches back safely up on the roof where they belong. The roof just looked so plain without them. You would love sitting up here on the flat roof. It is a great view of the cruise ships. There are so many here in Galveston now and they are thinking of expanding the capacity further. We are trying to figure out how to market to all of those people who come to Galveston to cruise.

Watching them work made me so nervous for their safety. These guys have amazing balance, but these arches are so big and awkward to pick up. Thank goodness there was no wind. I think they were quite relieved when this was done. Thanks for all your kind words over the years. It is such a blessing to get to do something I love, and this house is now surrounded by other who are committed to getting it restored. It's not the journey I thought I'd be on at this point in my life but now I can't imagine doing anything else.

It was so much work but now that they are back the house looks complete. It seems like everything with this house is a challenge and harder than it looks initially.

Wish I could have been there!! Becoming bilingual is in my top 10 things I'm thankful I did in my life. Awesome to be able to see things getting fixed correctly! Must feel great to have another part of the house fixed and checked off the list!! ❤

You would think I would know more Spanish having lived in Houston all my life. Two of our girls are fluent but of course neither is around when I need them. I know just enough to miscommunicate and get in trouble. Having these back on the house is a big weight lifted off my shoulders. No one's going to steal them up here!

This style of putty on the cap flashing is used to seal cockpit canopy glass on aircraft like the F-16. Pretty cool stuff

You can tell from my delayed response that I've taken a little break over the holidays to have some family time. Our Christmas gets spread out with family traveling but I have a little lull before Christmas Part 2. The eyebrow arches were originally passive vents with a hole in the roof underneath. Unfortunately, they leaked very badly and were causing a lot of damage, so we sealed up the holes and now they are only decorative. The one on the cone part of the roof was never a vent, it was always decorative.

This has been one of your most interesting drops you’ve done in a while. It reminds me of the early days when you used to explain the engineering principles, use models and diagrams, I guess it appeals to the geek in me. I'm a geek at heart. I wish I had the time to "geek out" on every video. It has been such a crazy year, but that's a good thing. We do have a few geeky things coming up in the new year. Our family is spread out and comes to town at different times, so we have Christmas for at least a week - so much food..... I'll have to work it off next year. Happy New Year!!!

Eeek! One of those bucket trucks crushed my driveway after Beryl in order to trim a leaning tree! Speaking of the roof wooden t&g decking, are there any tell-tale signs of replacement decking at the chimney stacks ? Im thinking if any original chimney stack was blown down or damaged during the 1900 hurricane then the collapse would have yoinked out or crushed some of the decking and then replaced. An obvious place to look would be the library/bedroom chimney up through the roof/attic of the southeast porch. The only original stack is the one from the west parlor and 1920s extension area you had in this video.

I'm so sorry about your driveway. Our sidewalk suffered the same fate. Great idea to do some sleuthing in the attic around the chimneys. I'll let you know what we find.

They used to be functioning vents but not now. They caused too many leaks. They really do add to the character of the house so it's nice to have them back up.
