At the end of the fight with a shorter line you should loosen the drag as you have a lot more pressure on the short line left in the water.

same thing happened to me Sat in the surf. was going for some whiting to use as cut bait. had a 1 to 1 1/2" piece of fishbites on a small hook. something hit it and took off. drag just keep screaming. I slowly tighten down the drag but had only #10 braid and didn't want to pop the line. it seemed like it was slowing down. Then it went hard as hell. Figured that was his last go and I could turn it. One more little tug and I felt the snap. Broke the #20 leader right above the hook. I figured shark.... But what the hell... on that little bit of fishbites?

Great set up, If you use a light steel leader or single strand it won't break off but you would probably get spooled on something really big. Not sure what is better because it has happened to me a few times off the rocks. Really don't like leaving that much line in the water. Please throw all your old line away in a proper disposal, that stuff is a real killer. Nice rod with Seaguide guides, I use them on my rods. Titanium frames and RS nitride rings, great guides. Got a 7'9" E-glass blank from Bill Batson and am outfitting it with REC Cerecoil guides spiral wrapped and a Seigel SM reel, my specialty jetty rod for large baits and big fish.
