I think it's a bit of both. Its a commercial company that produces them in south Africa now, where a guy named Bruce started it and I think now produces It through his company as far as I know. You can drop them an email and I'm sure they would be happy to answer any questions that you have. :)

Hello, this bar is not a darkening bar, Im not sure what comments you have read. It is a shampoo bar that you can use to wash your hair. The charcoal 'flavour' has certain beneficial properties for your hair and scalp but nothing to do with darkening. I hope that helps.
