Got my 1st Saab a couple mo ago, 2002 95 ARC wgn, and I've been going thru things. after finishing all brakes, rotors and brake fluid flushing, I saw coolant leaking aft of engine and for the life of me couldn't see it. If you don't have fancy wire hose clamp pliers, we found vise-grips were a good choice. You could "lock" the clamp open and work it back from the heater valve. Great video thanks.

This video just saved me hours of frustration! I always maintain my own car, and luckily my 2004 9-5 has been performing very well without a problem. A coolant leak started recently, from the same location as described in this video. From underneath, the hose looks okay. I'm going to take a chance and replace this valve with a URO aftermarket valve. I think this will fix my problem. THANK YOU Jonathan! -Matt, Atlanta, Georgia

Glad I could help! That valve can be a frustrating find, but not that hard to fix when you have the tricks in my vid!

I just finished the repair today. You definitely need the hose clamp pliers that Jonathan recommends. A quality tool is expensive (Sears cost me $40), but it'll be very difficult to try to use pliers on these hose clamps. I decided to try an aftermarket replacement valve - the genuine Saab valve was about 115 USD, vs. a Uro from rockauto.com at $15 + shipping. About two hours total time (I'm a little slow), but it was perfectly described in the video.

Hi! I would like to add something that also could be a problem when you have a leak from that area and that is that one of the hoses can leak from the connection to the valve and makes you think that it's the valve itself that leaks. I have that problem. I replaced the valve yesterday and drove off. After about 10km later the coolant level warning message popped up agan... Arrrrgh! I drove off to a gas station and noticed that it still leaked. One thing to remember from my experience is that I reused the original hose clamps because I didn't have the screw on clams. I will recheck today with new stainless steel screw clamps and give you a heads up on my progress. Cheers! PS. Good videos you guys are making!

Great video thanks! I'm in New Zealand and my 02 9-5 Aero (Right Hand Drive) just started dripping water - especially after I filled the coolant tank. @TrionicSeven8 жыл бұрын
+waihekeman Hey! In my (actually quite limited) knowledge I can only think of the water pump being in that area. There might also be some hoses going to the radiator, but I'd advise you to ask on a Saab forum to see if there is any common issue like yours. Also, I'd love to go to NZ some day! :)

I've read that you can remove the bypass valve and it'll give you a blow off valve sound. How would I go about removing it correctly so no damage is done? Is it as simple as removing the BPV and capping all open holes?
@TrionicSeven8 жыл бұрын
+Derek Marquardt You are confusing the coolant bypass valve with the air dump valve. They are two completely different things.

I did this coolant bypass valve replacement, and now my heater is only blowing cold air. Perhaps I got an air bubble in the cooling system. Have you heard of the best way to bleed the air out when it's not going out by itself? Thanks for the helpful videos and advice!

The 9-5 bleeds itself after 10-15 minutes of engine idle. Make sure the coolant is topped up.

I'm having no heat as well after replacing this. could the valve be defective? it fixed the leak alright but no heat, actually very sporadic heat, most of the time there's no heat. I've labeled the hoses when disconnecting as 'top' and 'bottom' and put them back the same back, they couldn't have switched the connector on the valve, could they? temp gauge is normal (goes to halfway point between cold and hot), I was thinking of changing thermostat but if gauge is normal, probably not thermostat right?

Is this coolant bypass valve same as a 'heater control valve'? the shop I took my car to said my 'heater control valve' needs to be replaced - my saab 9-5 2006 is leaking coolant; I would have had them fix it but they couldn't find this part locally. so now I'll try to get the part myself and replace it. I tried searching for 'heater control valve' but it mostly came back with 'heater bypass valve'. thanks!

Yes, I think it's the same. However, your 2006 will not have such a valve, as it disappeared with the 2002 model year.

I fucking hate my fucking SAAB! I have spent more money, and been on a tow truck more times in one year than in ten years with my Chevy. I 'm going to find a Swedish person regardless if they have ever worked at Saab and kick them in the nuts! Every time something is fixed, something else breaks! Every time I have to fix something, you have to take apart 4 or 6 other things to get to it. Wiring that just falls apart?! I got fifty year old triumphs and Buick's that the wiring is still good! What did they make the housing out of? CANDY!? WTF! "SAAB" stands for.....Somethings Always About (to) Break!...Or better yet, this ones for me, SOMETHING AN ASSHOLE BUYS! 1996 CS 9000 toilet. I live by the ocean and they salt the roads all winter so a new car will rot out in ten years here if you don't under-wash and oil it. That's why I took this car , cause it had 110,000 miles and no rot, It was mint underneath. It just needed new tires, and a muffler, and 4 disks and pads . My friend was getting a new car and was junking it, so he just gave it to me. And then I just fell in love with SAABs . mostly the looks and the handling. But the trouble started with the heater core and every relay and sensor, then the transmission started slipping, and "many" other small things. and now the head gasket. I think I'm done. My friends think I'm nuts for putting so much time and money into this car . but it's time cut my losses cause i"m just beating a dead horse here.

We've had 6 Saabs and every one has been great and reliable car. In fact, a Saab 9-5 Aero is what we gave our daughter for her 1st car. From safety, reliability, gas mileage, handling, comfort and ease of driving, we are at ease with that decision. Just like any car, if it wasn't maintained before you bought it and you haven't been maintaining it, then it's bound to have problems. I hug Sweds for making a great car. Our garage will always have one.
