Saab 9000 The Long Run @ Talladega Speedway 1986

In 1986 Saab wanted to prove the strength, speed and duratbility of the Saab 9000 by racing 3 9000's for 20 straight days and nights. Among the Saab drivers for this event (that broke multiple world records) was George Johnson, a long time customer, friend, and pilot. This video is posted in his memory.

I had this same car, down to the exact same wheels. 1986 SAAB (Scania) 9000 Turbo 5 Speed Manual. It made me fall in love with cars as a high school kid. The interior of that car was 20 years ahead of it's time. Tilted cockpit, digital automated climate controls, everything appointed where it should be. Best car I ever owned.

According to Saab people i've talked to (worked in the factory twice) some german manufacturers tried to beat this record in secrecy. Saab went official from start. That is a bold move.

Well, the old record was from mercedes if im right witk 50k km but only 1 out of the 3 cars finished. They took 9 days, and they became record holders untill saab haha

As a former ‘87 9kT owner and lover, I approve this video!! Great cars!! Got mine in an unexpected race with an Acura Integra. Just walked away from him, reaching 115mph in 4th gear before we ran out of road. I passed him in 4th at 50mph and just kept it floored.

I always used to think of this when cruising down the motorway at 75mph for a couple of hours in my 9000. Wasn’t exactly stressing it. Simply amazing cars

I remember the stand at NEC in 1988 which had big screens set up to show videos of this amazing achievement, I can remember just standing there in total amazement with the cars right there in front of me, surrounded by the music and screens, amazing.

All' epoca si investiva così in pubblicità,si investiva il proprio prodotto...per dimostrare l'efficienza...grandi auto per l'epoca...ho avuto un aero 9000 usata con 180.000 km..del 97. Era un bolide...in Germania ho toccato tranquillo i 250...km/h...la cosa bella che aveva una gran ripresa soprattutto i sorpassi..aveva solo airbag e ABS...del testo ci voleva il manico....

Minimal repairs, changing fluids and sparkplugs. And the cars ran for 20 days, doing 100 000 kilometers at an average of 213.3 k/h.

to be fair ... they worried about valves due to lack of fuel on the bank .. and changed the heads... though it turned out they were OK .Miscalculated the fuel starvation due to steep bank angle. I guess they had to come in more regularly afterwards ... to ensure fuel level was kept up.... both events prove how more remarkable the average speed was over the period.

Probably yes, nothing wrong with the system if correct plugs are used and serviced with the correct di electric grease every service.
