sreeja S My humble request to all ladies in Kerala who are protesting against changing customs of Sabrimala is to do a protest on streets BARE CHESTED to safe guard ancient customs . Across Kerala untill 1940s, ladies had to be barechested while entering a temple. It was only in 1937, low castes were allowed inside temple. So prior to that, only upper castes had access to temples and it was mandatory to them to remove any form of upper clothes, while inside the temple. The tradition of Kerala temples requires every devotee irrespective of gender to be barechested and people took that normal as it was part of age old social tradition. Then in 1940s, Madras Legislature passed a new law allowing every woman to enter into temple with their blouses or upper cloth in British Malabar District. Travancore and Cochin Kingdoms passed decrees in 1942 and 1945 respectively. Even passing so, for few years, ladies who were accustomed removing blouses while entering into temple found hard with upper clothes on their body. Some removed, while some didn’t. Can you think that old custom today? Imagine if Guruvayur kept the tradition of 1930s intact even today, asking all ladies to be barechested while inside the temple. How many of us will accept that? Wasn’t that a valid temple tradition followed for ages?

@@binithasurendran8977 Hi Suren, your point seems a good one, but it was in favour to the women that they had changed the law, you can see men being barechested in Guruvayur, Padmanaswami temple and in many more places, what if I being a male feels the need to enter the temple wearing upper body clothes and pants as well? that is not gonna be permitted and u might know it. I would say many do BELIEVE that women shouldnt enter the temple, its actually a part of their belief as everything is, atheist BELIEVE that no God exist, even we have religion and even the caste column in almost every govt forms, why? Its something related to belief rather than facts, we have any fact that any such God ever existed? Its a matter of belief. And now the next thing, equality- if every one is equal why would we need different queues, different rest rooms, diiferent buses , special reservation for ladies, separate laws for women protection? why would they need maternity leave, and shorten their working time to 5 pm? Why do we have a separate ladies hostel and a separate ladies college? Am I allowed to study in a ladies college where myself being a male? i guess thats not permitted either. Now to the point- It may be their right to visit Sabarimala but why do they wanna destroy others belief about the temple? Well, any one MAY HAVE THE RIGHT to enter into any temple without removing their shoes, WITH A FRIED CHICKEN LEG IN THEIR HAND, and suppose it happens and they say that its their right to worship and visit the temple in any manner , is it right? Being a student, why cant he/she be allowed to enter into schools without uniforms, isnt it their right to study? Its actually a kind of morality dear........

It's not some women. Almost 4000 women are there. I will fully support the devotees here. In a true sense, the women who enter the temple just to prove their version of victory or equality cannot have faith. They cannot have faith without believing in the religious principle. So, it doesn't matter if these women enter or not. It doesn't make any difference because they have no purpose in the temple. I even doubt where the supporters of this new judgment will go to the temple or not. On the other hand, those devotees who have faith cannot attain any sort of hope, comfort or spiritual gain when the law has disrupted what they believe in. Instead of seeing as men and women, it's better to see as believers and non believers. In these groups, I don't think any believer(male or female) who needs Ayyappa's blessing will support this law. On the contrary, only the non believers with zero benefit from the spirituality of Sabarimala will hold the cards of equality. From my perspective, this law is stupid in a way that it serves no one. Let the devotees follow their God in peace! There are some temples in India which are exclusive for women. Some restrict men and some totally ban men from entering. But again, I will tell the same if a law comes to allow men inside. It doesn't offer gender equality to men there but rather it only makes people who believe in those temple Gods crumble into darkness.

this issue is not about feeling. There are some deep yogic and occult reasons about why women are not allowed. Each diety has its own nature called swabhava or prakriti in Sanskrit. The presiding diety of sabrimala is lord ayyapa whose swabhava is only benificial to those who are brahamcharis. If women enter the temple it will be detrimental to energy of the devata.

@@ponnukunjappan you are right da, it is not gonna change anything, but everyone do have their own beliefs, no one will compromise it, atleast not me!!!! Da we have atheist, they simply carry on with thier belief that God doesnt exist, on the other hand, we have religions, hindu, muslim, Christians etc, why cant they be allowed to carry on with their beliefs? they of course arent hurting anyone da, i would also add that sati, untouchability etc. was something like a custom to be mandatorily followed by everyone, but this case in my opinion is not so, moreover when you hear the SC judgment '69 or '73, it is quoted that consecration leads to a character of deity by law (suopose it is correct, pls do correct me if im wrong) , thus the deity have the right under the constitution which under article 25.1, the rights of person (diety here)must be preserved.

@@bvn4680 from your name I think you're Christian, you do not know the scientific principles behind advanced hindu technologies, several thousand years ago we did a procedure in sabarimala temple, where only masculine energy made to vibrate in sabarimala temple. If any female go inside the shrine during their peak femininity the energy will harm there uterus and female harmones. So females are restricted for these good reasons. Also if females enter shrine during their menses it creates "Asuchi". There is no english word for this term. It means "something that affects the aura of others causing weak immunity ". For these reasons females are refrained to enter shrine only during this. This tradition is not only belief but also scientific. If you dont believe we dont care. This is our duty and our religion, our tradition with the acceptance from females of our religion. None from our religion disrespected it. Also this tradition is followed since several thousands of years. Who are you guys to come and teach us what is right or wrong. I kindly request you to first teach muslims ladies not to wear Burkha and Christian churches to come to an understanding who is Jehovah and who is Jesus and who takes the ownership of Bible.

I am in the restricted age group and an ayyappa devotee. sabarimala is not a public property but the house of Lord ayyapa. my house my rules. right?. now the very next question is how do u know this is what ayyappa desires. answer is simple. I have Been praying to him from childhood and I go to ayyappa temples near and chant his name. So if u don't believe me , then you try the same. go to ayyappa temples near home at least for a month and pray to him and understand his greatness by talking to his devotees and watch them undergoing that 48 days strenuous vrat and after that one month you can make up your mind whether this tradition is discriminatory or not . you can't comment on strange food by just looking right , you have to taste it ? how can you judge something without knowing the facts?

Good dabate. I have seen people shouting at each other without a proper stance. Here the the things were different. All very clearly expressed their views and experiences from their life taught them. As a crux of all these arguments, I can tell all of you that it is all about our beliefs and not the superstitions. I don't know how many believe in the South Indian Thantric Systems where the learned astrologers even heard predicted the future and those had got huge impact and influence over our beliefs and rituals. We had examples of such predictions even in the Ancient Indian Kingdoms and empires where the predictions showed is nature of accuracy. This is what happening especially in South Indian temple culture. It cannot be denied that astrology is a science. Based on these astrological calculations the beliefs and rituals after carried out. And if someone debates for the scientific basis for astrology , it may not be proved with evidences. Each of us is part of different inherited traditions and rituals. We can question those rituals and practises which are not humane and cause troubles to the Society. Here in the case of Sabarimala, no body is being hurt, its just a part of devotional rituals. A country like India where people starves to death, A country of hunger deaths, malnutrition, rapes let's use our energy and valuable time to empower India from all these before attacking Just a ritual practice which does not harm anybody. Let the diversity of that particular temple be hold on. And a great salute to Justice Indu Malhotra for understanding all the above said. Kindly stop digging the logics in the faiths because 'faiths are faiths' may be scientific or non scientific, the fabric of a different cultures made of. 'Swamiye Saranam Ayyappa'

If it is a real discrimination....why is it in other Ayappa temples women are allowed without any age restrictions.. ? The crux of this tradition is that the deity in Sabarimala is an eternal celibate. Just because there are few instances of breaking this doesn't mean that the history of deity is wrong. NDTV , I always had a 1% hope that you would some day realise that you are living in India and you have an Indic roots.

Mr. Nair, did you ask your parents if your mother climbed up the 18 golden steps of the shrine n went into the temple to feed you? Only if you had asked that, you wouldn't have been talking about it on a national TV channel. Mr. Nair, the chorootu or the first grains of rice a child is fed was never done inside the shrine. There were special arrangements made for tat down the 18 steps. Infact in most temples in Kerala, the chorootu happens just outside the Sanctum Santorum of the temple. So Mr. Nair's mother never entered the main temple.

man and women can enter shabirimala. take vritham for 41 days. all women have to do is to wait, till they reach 50. You can argue that why take vritham for 41 days where as there is no such thing at any other temple, this is because that is shabarimala. That's what makes that place special and also have reasons for that. Patience and faith, that is something a true devotee should have.

Pls don't talk about discrimination , to Kerala women . This Janaki is a wrong selection . Kerala society is The only matriarchal society in India , women were liberated in Kerala eons ago unlike the modern feminist elsewhere in India still trying . Kerala women have the highest development index , highest literacy of 97% and there are 1084 women for every 1000 males compared to India average of 850 for 1000 males. Btw Kerala women get the ancestral property not the sons. So pls don't say that Kerala women were oppressed to not go to Sabarimala . Mr Nair knows all this . Pity no one says the facts . Wrongs have happened and is happening . I don't go to Sabarimala as a male since I am not able to keep the 41 day vritham but other male friends do go with just 5 days vritham . That is wrong . It happens everywhere in India . From the anchor statement she gets to confirm that if a few don't follow a one way rule and enter , it means all should enter . What a shame ?

Yes, this is true. Prior to 1991, and after 1947, women used to enter, of all ages. This was the basis of the case filed against the Travancore Devasom Board in 1991 - that they are failing to protect the customs, and uphold the vow of Ayappan, which they are duty bound to do. The women who entered the temple are usually well connected, from the families of officials, bureaucrats and politicians. Commoners never adopted this practice en masse in respect of the customs. It was the outcry of the devotees against this violation of customs that led first to a devaprasnam, and then a case in the HC. The HC then upheld tradition, and made the unfortunate decision to enforce it via law, adding another layer to this tangle between faith and government. So, the entry of women was always against the norm/custom. The same can be evidenced from the now famous Ward & Conner report by the British in 1816, where they document that a temple exists where young women do not go, but old women and children alike are free to journey.

Hindus respected all forms....Even the ant's & plant species... Secondly, the caste System was even present in other Religions... Muslims have Ashraf's (High class) & Ajraf's (Low class)...The Christians in India also have a different category of Catholics... They have Dalit Christians(Low class) & Priestly class Christians (High class) as well... in Pakistan, Asia Bibi was not allowed to take water from the same source where the Muslims used to draw water... Toh tu Hume mat sikhaa.. Don't teach us about Discrimination... They say why woman are Not allowed in Sabarimala... Why arent men allowed in temples where only Woman are suppose to go.. Is this Discrimination?.. No this is Distinction.... Just like even in our Ordinary life, men go to toilets meant for men & woman go to the toilet's meant for woman!... Nobody would say, why can't Girls go the Boy's toilet.... Because she has freedom the constitution, court's & people should allow her to go to Boy's toilet.... what nonsense is that?...

So now we will see another PIL to ban the "Saat Pere" in Hindu marriages where the bride follows the groom in walking around the fire seven times. Now the PIL will argue that women are equal to men and they should walk together. They will also argue that fire should be replaced by a book on Indian Constitution to make sure Hindus are secular.

this issue is not about feeling.

In 1991, Justice K Paripoornan and Justice K Balanarayana Marar of the Kerala High Court in their ruling against the Travancore Devaswom Board, banned entry of women between ages above the age of 10 and below the age of 50 from offering worship at Sabarimala. These customs are made by some Poojaris and Thanthris (arch priest). Before the verdict of 1991, women often visit the temple, mainly for practical non-religious reasons. Even films were shot, the artists & actresses had visited the shrine of Lord Ayyappa. Women pilgrims of all ages had visited the temple to conduct the first rice-feeding ceremony of their children (Chorroonu) in the temple premises. On May 13, 1940, even the Maharani of Tranvancore had visited the temple. This has been also evident from the former Devaswom (Travancore Devaswom Board) Commissioner Smt. S. Chandrika’s statement that “the entry of young ladies in the temple during monthly poojas is not against the customs and practices followed in the temple.” Here she also admits that her granddaughter’s first rice feeding ceremony (choroonu) was held at Sabarimala temple. Former advisor to the then prime minister Manmohan Singh T.K.A Nair said that his chooronu, the first rice-feeding ceremony of a child, took place at Sabarimala and he was on his mother lap facing lord Ayyappan. Nair was born in 1939. The HC order noted, "the religious practices and customs followed earlier had changed during the last 40 years particularly from 1950, theyear in which the renovation of the temple took place after "fire disaster". Even while the old customs prevailed, women used to visit the temple. The Maharaja of Travancore accompanied by the Maharani and the Diwan had visited the temple in 1115 M.E. There was thus no prohibition for women to enter the Sabarimala temple in olden days. In recent years, many worshippers had gone to the temple with lady worshipers within the age group 10 to 50 for the first rice-feeding ceremony of their children. A change in this custom was brought by installin a flag staff (Dhwajam) in 1969. It is evident that this is not a century old custom. People will file review petition and bring back Breast Tax (Mulakkaram), untouchability, ban on the 'low caste people' or avarnas from entering Hindu temples.

There is no prohibition. Just an age restriction for the entry of women (10-50 may not enter). The deity in Sabarimala, Lord Ayyappa is consecrated as Naishtika Brahmachari or eternal celibate. This is a matter of belief. Therefore it is not open to logical interpretations. How can we understand anything without a logical explanation unless we accept belief for what it is? So here's the background for this restriction. The shrine of Malikapurathamma stands next to that of Lord Ayyappa. Legend has it that she wanted to marry the Lord when he liberated her from her demonic avatar which in turn transformed her into a striking beauty. But the Lord spurned her saying that his calling was to answer prayers of his devotees. When she begged him repeatedly, he is said to have assured her that he will marry her the day new devotees (Kanni Ayyappas) stop visiting Sabarimala after observing arduous stricture of 41 days. These men plant a sign (a small shoolam) at sharamkuttiyal. Malikapuratamma is supposed to go up to Lord Ayyappa the day there are no more shoolams at Sharamkuttiyal. Until such time, no woman aged 10-50 may approach the Lord. Another version says that this deity is Dharma Shastha - consecrated as naishtika brahmachari in accordance with Agama Shastra, a tantric branch of Hinduism very different from the Vedic one. It then goes into a tizzy of explaining how the life force in any human being moves from the mooladhara chakra to the sahasrara chakra when a human being progresses on his or her path of spiritual enlightenment. It requires a stricture of 41 days, abstinence, purity and fasting before devotees can make their journey. Women between the ages of 10-50 hold the life force in their womb during menstruation and it is ill advised for them to seek the upward movement of this force by refraining from observing these strictures or going to tantric rituals conducted at places like Sabarimala. Hope this helps.

The Heading is wrong. It's not "Why some women are protesting?". It should be "Why ALL women devotees of ayyappa is protesting". If one women of that between the age limit enters then it's affecting their faith. Sabarimala is not a public place, as a matter of fact no temples are such. It's the place of devotees and most of all the diety. If the women devotees doesn't want to go to sabarimala why are some reformists interfering in faith. Sabarimala is not gender discriminatory it's only one of the diverse temples in Kerala having its own customs. Reforms should come within the people of that faith by a common consensus. If the Majority of the women devotees want this then only are your arguments are valid.

When you ask a female devotee why women between age of 10 and 50 are not allowed they keep saying this is the belief, it is our faith and its what are parents have told us. Do none of them know if there is an actual reason behind the exclusion, a spiritual justification rather than saying its just how things have been. MAYBE 10 YEARS LATER WHEN PEOPLE GROW OUT OF THEIR SHELLS AND FOCUS ON THE FAITH RATHER THAN THE CUSTOMS THIS VERDICT WOULD MAKE SENSE. After all its upto the devotees if they want to go or not. NOBODY IS FORCING ANYONE AND THIS LAW DIDN'T EXIST BEFORE 91 so what difference does this actually make.

All the cases have come in court because women had gone there and they had to face legal actions the host trying to prove that women were entering just 3-4 cases don't prove that women between age 10-50 entered. There's nothing related to menstruation it's just the deity Ayyappa is celibate as he himself had turned down goddess who wanted to marry Ayyappan and is still waiting to marry him. Go read the complete story. NDTV if you want to gain credits do it some other way please don't try to force or mislead people. Media is a business.

It is totally wrong to say that women were going to sabarimala before 1991. Some influential people like Mr. Nair's family misused their influence and had no qualms about breaking the centuries old restriction of young women not going to sabarimala. Such visits were exceptions rather than usual practice. Making laws taking examples from exceptions is totally unfair and unethical. The restriction regarding young women entry to sabarimala is centuries old.(IT IS CLEARLY STATED IN A BOOK PUBLISHED IN 1830) The no. of protesters were not 8000 as you told but lakhs of devotees of all age groups including young women participated in the protest in every part of kerala. 99.99 % hindu population are against this SC verdict. Those who are happy about the SC verdict are a few feminists ,and communists(who usually are non believers in god ) who always wanted to destroy places of worship.

The anchor's point just seems that "there have been some instances of women in the regulated age category visiting Sabarimala". If that is her point, can we consider this analogy of a "No Smoking" or a "No Parking" PUBLIC space? If a few miscreants smoke in a "No Smoking space" or park their vehicles in a "No Parking space", will that be used as a reference to claim that from now on, this is NOT a No Smoking/Parking space? Or will the miscreants be imposed a fine or punishment? And the most surprising factor in these kind of debates is the way the participants are chosen - people who don't even know how to pronounce the place as SHabarimala (not Sabarimala) and the deity as NAISHTIKA Brahmachaari are invited as participants.

The funniest part in this judgement is that the appeal to supreme court was by North Indian activists whose Basic agenda is publicity. These people are not at all aware of the traditions or practice of women between the age group of 10 and 50 not going to Shabrimala. Not only this, this is for the North Indian ladies, the women in Kerala adhere to very strict practice during that period even at home. That is the reason why women from Kerala have decided to wait it out. Also very surprising that the supreme court did not even bother to invite the malayali women to hear them out in this regard and then pronounce the judgement. If supreme court would have done this then it would have been a complete judgement. Sorry to say I feel today the judgement is incomplete without the representation of the malayali women.

🙏🏼Temples of Hindu Gods are for those who are born as HINDU or converted as Hindu by signing as respecting and following Hinduism or by joining a Hindu organisation. So all those who enter a temple should do on belief in Hinduism and not as a tourist. All should observe all rules of the temples which are instructed by the diety or by the Thandri or as per Hindu scriptures, Gurus Samnyasi, acharyas, scholars etc. If any do NOT like the laws of Hindus and don't believe in the custom and tradition they are free to do so and keep away from Temples. They cannot force to change the acharas and customs which are accepted by majority of the Hindus and which are according to the advise of Hindu Gods and scholars. If any body still want to believe in Hinduism and also want to challenge and change the tradition they should do by discussing among Tandris, Gurus and scholars and not in the court, government or media. Because temple is the proper of only Hindus and not of all citizens. Even if people of other religion may pray in some very few temples, the wealth of Temples are for teaching, and propogating Hinduism in the whole world and to help Hindus who are poor. *In brief, if any Hindu want a change in acharas and customs he/she should be able to convince the Thandri, administrators, Gurus, head of caste groups etc and majority Hindus. 🙏🏼🕉🙏🏼

Kerala is witnessing unprecedented Hindu uprising in protest against the Sep. 28 Supreme court judgment making unlawful, the ban on entry of 10-50 aged women in Sabarimala temple in Kerala & ban on entry of women during their menstrual days in temples across the country . Common hindus with absolutely no political affiliation are taking to streets across Kerala in a sense of absolute betrayal of their faith by the Supreme Court and Kerala government! However, there is nation-wide misunderstanding on the real cause of the uprising, especially in the absence of healthy debates on the matter in non-Malayalam Media. This is most evident from the National Womens' Commission chairperson's remarks that she fails to understand the issue as women are free to enter or not to enter a temple ! This remark shows how superficial the national understanding is , of the issue. This note is an attempt to drive reality of the sep. 28 SC judgment home to English-speaking Indians. Kindly forward this message to as many non-Malayalees as possible. Let truth prevail! Why are Kerala Hindus protesting? (IN A NUTSHELL) Precisely because the Sep. 28 SC Constitution Bench verdict violates a Hindu's Fundamental right to belief guaranteed by the Constitution (Article 25)! Lets see how.. We need to break the judgment into two parts: 1. Entry of women between 10 and 50 years of age to Sabarimala temple. Context: It is custom of centuries (Despite odd instances of nepotism-led -later Tantrically pacified-entries otherwise ) that women of menstrual age are denied access to the Sabarimala temple. This custom is connected to the Tantrically conceived Naishtika Brahmachari nature of the deity and the concept of Deity-believer unity/singularity , violation of which is believed to violate the very nature of the deity and destroy the sanctity of the temple The Agitating points: * The verdict fails to acknowledge the very nature of any Hindu temple. A Hindu temple is not and should not be a "public place" that unconditional/unqualified access enforcible by invoking fundamental rights. Hindu temples are Devaswom/ Devasthanas (Place of God, legally acknowledged in many court judgments. In short , it is private property where entry only if conducive to the deity's Tantric nature can be acknowledged. No tresspass to be allowed. * There is only age restriction, not gender descrimination in Sabarimala. Article 14 which was (cited by petitioners as basis for appeal for the women-entry )seeks to prevent discrimination * According to Hindu belief, a Temple more than / different from any other building because of the Tantric energy conceived there. A temple is sanctity / divinity is lost if rules to ensure Tantric energy's maintenance are not enforcible. Only a Tantric can decide on behalf of all worshippers on aspects of Tantric energy. The verdict would legally prevent temple authorities / Hindus from preventing entry of menstrual-age women which will diminish temple sanctity. This is a direct onslaught on a Hindu's Fundamental right to belief guaranteed by the Constitution (Article 25). 2. Entry of women during their menstrual days to all Hindu temples in the country Context: All body wastes are denied entry to Temples and are considered impure. This is why there are no toilets attached to Hindu temples. Since menstrual flow is beyond body control, women This part of the verdict has more far-reaching consequences and is not limited to sabarimala Temple, but lakhs of temples across India. This would mean that it would be illegal for Temple authorities to include prohibition of entry of menstruating women as part of rules to maintain temple sanctity. Worse, devotees and temple authorities can only remain mute spectators if "Liberal" activists walk upto the sanctum / garbhagriha with placards crying"We are bleeding" . Worst, this judgment would make way for calls for appointment of women including, on menstrual days as pujaris. The Agitating point: * As with the first part of the verdict, According to Hindu belief, a Temple more than / different from any other building because of the Tantric energy conceived there. A temple is sanctity / divinity is lost if rules to ensure Tantric energy's maintenance are not enforcible. Only a Tantric can decide on behalf of all worshippers on aspects of Tantric energy. The verdict would legally prevent temple authorities / Hindus from preventing entry of menstruating women which will diminish temple sanctity. This is a direct onslaught on a Hindu's Fundamental right to belief guaranteed by the Constitution (Article 25). In short, there is an overwhelming sense of betrayal by the ruling Court and the Kerala State Gov. (which supported the petitioners) among the Kerala Hindus ; For them, prohibiton of essential temple rituals vilify their temples making temples mere Public buildings , devoid of the Tantric energy they visit the temples for! Can there be a greater attack on a religious group ? This note is an attempt to drive reality of the sep. 28 SC judgment home to English-speaking Indians. Kindly forward this message to as many non-Malayalees as possible. Let truth prevail! SATYAMEV JAYATE!

The custom and belief is that the women who are capable of having menstruation is not supposed to be at Lord Aiyyappa as he is a 'Naisthika Brahmachari', and it is being followed by the devottes till now. In 1991, kerala HC specified the age group from 10-50. You can see that the age group was put forth by the HC but the custom has been followed even before 1991, if it was violated by anyone, shouldnt they be punished for violating it? Why should the devotees have to pray the price!!! We malayalis have been believing in the custom for years. As per TKA Nair sir, it is something which involves oral act, however newsreader seems to have documentation related to 1991 HC judgement. It is clear according to HC (not satisfied personally but believes the media presents true data) , women might have entered into the temple before 1991, if that was the custom earlier ie. if the women can enter the temple, why would HC put a ban on women of such age at '91? If women was allowed to enter before '91, HC would have permitted their entry into the temple, so it is crystal clear that women (10-50) arent supposed to enter the temple, if someone would have entered a long way back, it was their mistake and would have been paid the price as said by MKG sir. Next point I would point out is that the belief denies only the entry of those women who are btwn 10 to 50, i would question the mindset of those women who wish to enter into the temple. Sabarimala is a place for worship, for the devotees (devotees are the ones believing in the custom of deity, how can anyone be called a devotee if they break the custom?).
