Breaking news November 2022: Researchers at the Finnish University of Oulu have concluded that Carolus was not assassinated, but killed by enemy forces. By studying x-rays of his skull and extensive test shooting of different ammunition, they have concluded that he was killed by a an iron ball with a diameter of more than 2cm, travelling at a velocity of 200m/s at the moment of impact. This implies that the shot was fired from the enemy fortress, about 200 metres from where Carolus was standing when he was killed.

What I like most about this song is that at the last repetition of the chorus, Joakim's voice falters and he rushes to catch up to the choir at several points and then he screams "Carolus Rex" at the end. It's like Joakim is singing from the perspective of one of the soldiers carrying his late, beloved king back to Sweden whilst they are singing this very song like a funeral dirge and he can't contain his grief. It's such a... human and raw tone to end the song on. I love it!

Yeah. I especially love when he says "Tanken tär / the thought hurts". That line, for me, has so much emotion.

True. This was actually a goal with the Swedish version of the album. They wanted to make the Swedish version more personal, and told from the perspective of the Swedish soldiers. Considering this song and “En Livstid I Krig”… Mission fu**ing accomplished!!!

That's because it's supposed too. The English album is from the outside point of view. From those not involved, looking at the rise and fall of an Empire. While the Swedish album is from the Swedish point of view. From the eyes of average Swede, we see the rise and fall of a mighty Empire that would never rise again. Just as the mystery of it's demise would never be known.

Mhm, when I translated it the actual line I got was closer to "The dream ran out of sand" i.e ran out of time, but in English this translation definitely hits better than that. Not a native Swedish speaker so I'll have to take your word for it.
