In case you were wondering about what "the whites of their eyes" means, the Swedes were not allowed to fire their muskets until they could see the white part of their enemies eyes. Most experts believe this distance was only about 20-30 yards! They Swedes knew that beyond that range, misses were very common. They would shoot one round at close distance and then immediately close the gap and rush in with bayonets and they absolutely rolled over enemies that way! Many military experts still study the tactics of the Caroleans to this day and apply it to modern warfare!
@secularnevrosis4 жыл бұрын
They were also considered to be one of the best drilled musketeers of the time, and used some of the best muskets that was avaible. Common descriptions of the time was that the Caroleans could shoot 3 salvos before the opponents had fired their second. "The white of their eyes.." is even older than this. Gustav II drilled his cavalry to fire their first pistol and then the second "When they saw the white of their eyes" and drop it so that they just had enough time to draw the sword before they crashed into the enemy. At Gustav II time this was unheard of, charging into the enemy wasn't normally what the cavalry did at the time. He also changed the way infantry and artillery worked together. He was after all the inventor of "modern" warfare.

from what Sabaton said in there history video. They would close to 100 meters then the first rank would fire. The ranks would then cycle, the first rank would fix bayonets. then would close to 50 meters the second rank would then fire, then charge for hand to hand combat.

Gotta love the way they actually incorporated the entire Lord’s Prayer. I mean obviously they would considering what the song is about and the title of the song but it’s still really awesome. This song is actually the only reason for me knowing the Lord’s Prayer. If this song didn’t exist i wouldn’t really know it. Sure i probably knew it back when i was doing my Confirmation back in whenever that was but after that i totaly forgot about it again.

From about 1630 the regions made a deal with the crown to have a regiment of 1200 men. At first they used to draft anybody with out a job, but after a lot of criticism it was changed to voluntary service. Back then Sweden was a very religious country, and the soldiers put their trust in god to see if they would survive the battle or not. Even priests participated in battle to boost the moral of the soldiers. Carolean tactics was as you mention, to march towards the enemy like a walk in the park, and when they saw the white in their enemys eyes (about 100 feet) they fired their muskets, and then charged with swords and pikes.

"Back then Sweden was a very religious country, and the soldiers put their trust in god to see if they would survive the battle or not" This part shows the Viking heritage of the Swedes.

@@argantyr5154 Well most Swedish people living in Sweden at that time was immigrant from other parts of Europe Just a tiny fraction of people ancestry was from the Norsemen and most of them did not do any viking. But it is true that Norsemen what was out viking in Europa did not fear death that much based on religion as if your died a hero's death you be transported to Valhalla for a eternity of parties. If you look at moderns parables you realism it might not be that good of a thing as people not afraid to die for a promise of a great reward in a paradise. That is the differences between Vikings and the Caroleans as they looked at it as "If I die in combat is is gods will and who am I to argue against god." They did not expect a grand reward in heaven.
@argantyr51544 жыл бұрын
@@ThomasVanhala I did not know that the Caroleans was Immigrants from other parts of Europe. My point was, the belief of the predetermined outcome was similar. Before a Battle the "leader" of the Viking Army would say/shout "Odin ejer jer alle "(Odin owns you all), meaning the outcome was determined in advance. Vikings did very much believe in Fate (Remember the "Nornes").
@ThomasVanhala4 жыл бұрын
@@argantyr5154 Most Swedish not only the Caroleans, A common trait in Swedish people is the high cheek bone and that is something we got from the Walloons. By the time of the Caroleans we did not even have 50% of Norseman blood. The only people in the world that is some what close to the Norseman is the people of Island. "Odin owns you all" it was Odin shouted after throwing his spear Gundnir before the battle again the Vanir. So it is more just reciting the religious story as inspiration. Yes the Norns have a lot to do with fate but after you died on the battlefield you still have Valkyries choosing if you go to Freyja Afterlife field or to Odin's the feast hall of Valhalla to party on all night and eat of Saehrimnir. It was a quota 50/50 and that gave the vikings a reason to perform well.

Caroleans were probably best utilized by the king Charles the XII, who was famous for giving emotional heroic and patriotic speeches before each attack and charging together with his men, which was in time when leaders did not tend to fight in hand to hand combat anymore.
@pyrebird75674 жыл бұрын
The Caroleans were soilders under the kings Karl XI and Karl XII (latinized as Carolus Rex) during Swedens time as a great power, and were known as some of best in Europe. Karl XII reguarly beat armies 2x, even 3 and 4x, bigger then his own. One thing that made them more effective was that when they called to war, certain areas (depending on thier poputation and size) were expected to field a number of soilders, but the difference with the Caroleans were that it wasn't just ayone who could answer that call. They were some of the earliest profesional soilders whose job it was to go and train in army drills even during peace time (very unusual at the time) and when they weren't doing that their village was responsible to have a small home with some fields to farm on for them to live on (called a soldatstorp, I think they were part of the tax system, but I'm not sure) and when they were away on drills or in war the community were responsible of taking care of it until they returned. Those drills made the Caroleans disciplined and skilled. Acoording to what I've read about them it was very common for infantrymen to know how artillery functioned and how he should fight if he's on horseback and vice-versa, which made them very flexible. Their weakness, which is what made the training nessicary in the first place, was size. It takes time to train a soldier and Sweden had a much lower population then many other European powers at the time, which meant it was important for them to loose as few as possible. That meant they needed to be fast and keep their momntum on the battlefield. Some of their tactics were Gå-På (go-on), a very aggresive infantry tactic based on shock methods, and Knä-om-knä (knee-by-knee), a unusally tight cavalry formation used for charges. Carolus Rex is a great concept album that sings about Swedens time as a great power, and I'd recommed listening to it in order, and also checking some of the songs out in swedish because they have 2 variants on the album. Some songs aren't that different, just translated but. for example, in english "A Lifetime of War" talks more in overview of the Thirthy Years' War, while in swedish "En Livstid i krig" talks about the war from the perspective of a single swedish soilder.

Already as a 15-year-old in 1697, he was allowed to take over as monarch for Sweden in a huge empire in a collection of Nordic empires that included both Finland, Estonia, large parts of present-day Latvia and large parts of northern Germany. After a seven-month guardianship. At the age of 18, he was involved in a major war, the Great Nordic War. it was not a war he had started it was a war he was forced into. Russia Denmark Poland and the German state of Saxony declared a joint war against Sweden. In the blink of an eye he defeated the Danes in 1700 he as an 18 year old led the army at Narva in Estonia he defeated between 5 and 10 times as big here Russian here. He then turned down the Poles against Saxony after six years he had defeated them too and he could once again turn his gaze eastwards towards Russia. One unfortunate day, November 30, 1718, Charles X11 lay in a moat where the fortress of Fredriksten was besieged. A bullet in the head put a stop Karl X11 life he was 36 years old exactly half his life 18 years out of 36 years he had been in the field he had thus spent half his life defending Sweden

Swedish troops under King Charles XII's command forced Russian troops to retreat to the city of Holowczyn in the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth (today's Haloŭtjyn in Belarus). After six years of warfare, in which the Swedish troops forced both Denmark-Norway, the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth and the Electorate of Saxony into separate peace, Charles XII began a campaign against Russia in 1707, with the aim of capturing the Russian capital Moscow and forcing Tsar Peter I to peace . After several months of difficult march, the Swedish main army arrived on the river Vabitj, which was guarded by a Russian army of about 40,000 soldiers under the command of Field Marshal Boris Sheremetev and Prince Alexander Menshikov. On July 14, Charles XII's battalions and field marshal Carl Gustaf Rehnskiöld's squadrons, a total of 12,500 soldiers, crossed the river and attacked an individual Russian position under the command of General Anikita Repnin. As the Russian troops were separated from each other, and lacked a unified command, they could not stop the Swedish attacks and were forced to retreat.
