As has been mentioned before, yes, a bear did serve under the Allied Forces during the Battle of Monte Casino. His name was Wojtek, a Polish citizen who received an official rank and designation (later promoted to corporal). He was encountered by the Polish expatriates whilst fighting in Africa when a small child presented young Wojtek wrapped in a blanket to the Polish soldiers. Apparently his mother had been killed by hunters and the young refugee somehow came into possession of the cub. The men became extremely fond of him, often wrestling with the bear and playing other games with him. Wojtek was extremely friendly, although he terrified other allied soldiers upon first encounter. He could also smoke and drink beer which he loved. When his unit was moved out of Egypt the British wouldn't allow him on board, "no animals allowed". So his unit appealed to the exiled government to grant Wojtek citizenship and then draft him, which they did. His famous moment was at Monte Casino when his unit had to leave him behind with American artillery who were scared to death of him and had him chained up. He watched as men transported crates of shells and mimicked them, picking up crates himself and carrying them to their destination. I'm so happy to have some Polish blood in me. :D

My late grandfather fought at Monte Cassino as part of the 2nd Battalion Scots Guards, 201st Guards Brigade. He was known as "Bren Gun Bob" as the name suggests he was a Bren gunner. I have memories of him sharing his experiences in Italy with me (like being shot at by a sharpshooter when he was in an outhouse). The song holds a special meaning to me and because it has that meaning it tears at my heart a good deal. God speed Bren Gun Bob.

@@jacques3148 It seems like my post was blocked by KZbin. Yes, I do French history and have been translating a book on the French combats of 1940. This project has been ongoing for 8 years. My mother is from the Southeast of France. We're Corsicans. So we're very tied to the Pied-Noirs, Harkis who got abandoned, and to the ANF of the French Empire. I'm entire family is very militaristic. The Franco-Moroccan units of Monte Cassino drove the fear of God into Albert Kesselring. I do run a blog where I discuss my religious experiences (Christian mysticism) in finishing the next critical steps to this translation project. It's absolutely inspired by God. It makes the very main linguistics look silly, especially since I barely can write in French and left college without a BA in history (to do this project). It's quite a linguistics feat. My logician and computer science friends are huge fans of it and think it will have massive linguistics implications. It reads very poetically.

@@jacques3148 Hi!!! I'm from North Carolina near a military base. My father was in the Marine Corps and met my mother in Toulon. I'm very favorable to traditional Catholicism. I think you'll love the translation. The words don't come from me. It reads so poetically. EVERY SINGLE WORD IS CONSERVED, and I make it work through geometry (like 《 tout droit 》), and the many methods I've come up with. It's pretty remarkable. In fact, I just found an article zero that will require a different translation (jusqu'à épuisement), in contrast to when the article zero. I just translated 《 jusqu'alors 》as "thitherto." I ask you to join this journey. I'm absolutely not a self-promoter. I turned down $25,000 in 2015 to do this project since I didn't want it corrupted, took poverty vows, and my husband, whom seems to have been sent to me by Saint Francis of Assisi (I don't know that but what preceded it was dire since I was sleeping in the woods for several months after I left UCLA with ONE PAPER DUE to do this translation!!), has been able to fund whatever I need. This year, I had intervention from Saint Vincent Ferrer, Sainte Geneviève, a visual of Joan of Arc on August 22nd (a stigmata formed of the Croix de Lorraine for 3 days on my right wrist where I am to be branded when the project gets completed), a revelation from Saint Francis in September, the Blessed Mother on November 1, a Rosary Revelation on 6 November, a Marian Sign on 8 December, among many others. It caused me to become VERY RELIGIOUS in a flash. How could you not be? I was religious but confused and probably too prone to Wrath before I purchased a relic on 9 May that fit perfectly in my hand, with which I pray each day. So now it's daily mortification (almost) and celibacy vows. I say all of this so that you know that I'm very serious. My Rosary construction was remarkable. I make a blog post about it. I would also love to learn about your family history. I have some French Army relics that I can send you by mail as well. I never charge because Saint Martin of Tours would not do so. I'm trying to find one to whom to give those away. I'm going to purchase a Second Empire Saber as a relic in a few weeks so I can carry it in public and draw some spiritual force from it. I'm not allowed to post the link here but you can piece it together: brandedmartyr [dot] blogspot [.com]. If you have difficulty finding it, please let me know. I started it with the intent to convert people to Catholicism and to talk about whatever is happening in my spiritual life. On Facebook, I go over my translations, which is more a secret, since academics do steal, so I don't write about my translations in public. Here's a note: Se faire + inf = to get done by way of Oracle Se laisser + inf = to get done by way of Will Se voir + inf = to get done by way of eyeshot S'entendre + inf = to get done by way of earshot I finally cracked the pronominals this year via the Greek middle voice. All the subjunctives are proven, and it's not what the Académie française says it is in 90% of cases. They result from a failing of logical that the subjunctive exists to correct. Just solved a few days ago the roots and extensions of aussi (as), si (ever so, ever such), tant (so many, so much), autant (as much, as many), tel (such), tellement (suchly); then the amplifiers tout (quite), fort (very much), fort peu (very much a trifle), Homerics (very + adjective when to the left), très (really), etc. Note that none of these have the same translation. Then I prove the partitive and indefinite articles through Geometry. They work in all cases. No intersection with "quelque" (some). In fact, what I discovered when I started on formalizing what I'm doing is that this is all eerily resembling Topology, an obscure field of math, in that French and English will have an isomorphic relationship! So I guess my math education wasn't for naught And this is coming from someone who grew up in a slum (my dad abandoned the family over his cardinal sin of lust), is of peasant stock, and is nearly illiterate in French since my mother never taught me. I only took one class of French, and I couldn't read the first sentence when starting the project. How could it not be inspired by God?? Of course it is. It's a fact!! Peasant girls, not knowing a language, don't make the top translators of French look amateur. That does not happen. Does this remind you of something? Joan of Arc is one. I wore the Cross of Lorraine since 2014. In the picture with my husband, I'm wearing it there as well. It's over one hundred years old from 1914-1915. On the blog, write a comment and I'll help you find me on Facebook. Then I'll roll the red carpet for you. And connect you with some of my friends too from France. I hope to learn much from you about Catholic Mysticism. The Divine Comedy opened my perspective entirely! Merry Christmas to you too!! It was a great day. I'm making peace between my mother, father, and myself. I learned from her that she didn't know what to do with me when I was small since I would throw money away when she gave me some as a present. It confused her. Now that I've moved to Mysticism, it is starting to make sense to her 😯

Every time I listen to this song, the weight of this battle hits me: Forces from every western Allied nation, united in one army, winning a victory that would lead directly to the first fall of an Axis capital of the war. A symbolic victory maybe, given the state of Italy at the time, but man is that one hell of a symbol.

AnotherWotNoob Honestly chess is a bit too simple for me. I prefer games like Civ 5. Resources, economics, science, production, nation's happiness, and other status scores that you need to pay attention to. I don't know why but I have an easier time winning Civ than chess.
@sebastianfexeus723910 жыл бұрын
Soviet Union Heh, they are quite a bit different. I think chess allows for more strategy than Civilization, and is more about your own skill. In Civilization battles tend to be about who has more units and where the units are. In chess the winner is almost always the one who can predict what the opponent will do and exploit their mistakes/weaknesses. If you would start playing chess more you would notice the concept and how you use your pieces is simple, while everything else is not. IMHO, Civilization V has tons more things and stuff to do, while chess has deeper strategy and (altough less than strategy) more tactics.
@TybrosionMojito10 жыл бұрын
Sebastian Fexeus I would like to point out that getting more units into the right position is part of the strategy of civ. It's actually the hardest part. Once war starts, I think Civ gets easier.

Whenever any of Germany's accomplishments come up in WWII people always give stupid fucking reasons like yours and it sounds like they are discounted as a fighting force. You know, not all German soldiers during WW2 were Nazis. I mean a guy who was half Jewish served in the German army during WW2, he made a book by the way.
