Tanzania, The Day the President Died (#33)

3 жыл бұрын

It's not every day you're in a country when their president dies. The president of Tanzania had just died when I was in Dar es Salaam, and everything closed down. Train stations, restaurants, bars, Samaki Samaki, everything. There was nothing left to do but go out and buy the flag of Tanzania.
#sabbatical #tanzania
It may not be as easy to find things in Dar as in the Silk Road markets of Samarkand in Uzbekistan, but I managed.

Love him or hate him (and I've seen both sides), I can say that without him I wouldn't be in Tanzania right now. Last year at the height of the global lockdown, this man said to me, "Sabbatical, I know you're depressed being stuck at home all year. I also know you've gotten your Covid test. Come to Tanzania and drink some Safaris." By a twist of fate he may have changed my life, because I'll always have a bond with this nation from now on. Upwards and onwards, marafiki zangu. 🇹🇿

Hollywood and the pop culture have sold an illusion to the rest of the world about America being God's Own Country! A country where everything is big, beautiful and bling! A country where everyone is beautiful and benevolent! What a rude awakening awaits these simple Africans whenever they land on the shores of the real America!

Tanzania is ok as a tourist but there are many things Sabbatical isnt considering. Clean drinking water is limited, sewerage and sanitation problems, reliable electricity, gas and other fuels, education systems are limited, health systems are limited, high rates of malaria, aids and other health issues. Workers have no rights or protections. Around 10% of babies fail to reach adulthood, compared to under 1% in the US/west. Maternal health, dying from childbirth is much higher in Africa. US has a welfare safety net, food stamps, subsidized housing, free health for poor, disabled and old, and plenty of charities. US has much more opportunities for work. If you get sick like cancer, treatment options and success is much much higher in the US. Many African countries have serious corruption problems and conflicts between tribes or ethnic groups. Rights for women, gays, minorities is limited. FGM and poor treatment/safety of women in general. Tanzania has better standards than many African countries but if Sabbatical had to live and work in Tanzania like the locals, his standard of living would change a lot.

@@tubester4567 Tommy's entire experience in Africa would be different if he were a woman. He wouldn't have as much freedom to go wherever he wants and approach whomever he wants. Not to mention, the WAY he would be treated by the people who interact with him (most of them being men) would be dramatically different (especially in the Muslim majority areas)... there wouldn't even be a vlog to begin with.

My opinion is that Dr Magufuli was murdered because he opposed the globalists, that's what happens to anyone opposing them, not all but nearly all. He and the people of Tanzania made me strongly believe that I will be moving in Tanzania. Since he died, I'm not sure what to believe of the future and especially because I feel that the government has been heavily corrupted by foreign investors. God bless Tanzania 🇹🇿 and hopefully I get over this fear of the government. Peace and love from Denmark 😘 ♥ 🖤

The 21 days national mourning is constitutionally mandated when a sitting president dies. Its shorter for former presidents, a sitting VP or the sitting prime minister. Infact when the vice president (who is the president now) first announced magufulis passing..she mistakenly declared 14 days national mourning and had to correct it to 21 days when she was sworn in

Western worlds are mostly materialistic because of economy structure they have but in Africa most countries have not been so well developed economically and politically so people tend to be less materialistic and naturally more loving and caring to each other.

Magafuli was willing to put his country before the demands of finance capital, and the price is very high, something that many countries in Africa have seen up close.

I like your convo with the three youn guys. However you gotta understand that most people don’t have money and the similar is very low. So I feel like like albeit you were saying that things were cheap in TZ and one can travel to Zanzibar, I don’t think those guys could necessarily relate to that. Video nzuri. Safi sana.

That's fair. Costs in Tanzania are lower, but salaries are too. In the US, costs are higher, but salaries are as well. But you can live happily in either one, I feel.
