I mean to be fair, Jesus looks like an anime hero. I really don't think the visuals are a result of extremist Christian views since it's made by an actual and competent animation company, and the character designs were probably their idea. Actually, the way they look now may be because the company was from a Southeast Asian country. Gacha games are extremely trendy there, and these designs look straight out of a gacha game. Edit: I'd also like to add that this company has likely made research on Christianity for the sake of creating these designs, since the designs are surprisingly more competent than other Christian films made by actual Christians (the angels being an obvious one). So this company, which may not even be Christian, were good-intentioned enough to do their own research in order to get things right on their part, which were the visuals. It's just sad that their competency was wasted on this.

I’m not too much of a religious person (I believe there is a god and a satan but they just don’t bother with us and do their own things in the universe) so I really don’t wanna hear what this church said as opposed to the other ones nor why this is inaccurate or not. @Пинагод Жыл бұрын
I mean, that could be his true form, but in the Bible they describe Satan as something along the lines of momentary leisure and pleasure, so he'd definitely be the epitome of attractive. Unless you're implying Satan is one of God's angels that was simply in charge of persecution as others believe, then yeah, he'd probably be lovecraftian horror, cause that's what Biblically accurate angels were. Demons were attractive, angels were horrific.
@tygerion4404 Жыл бұрын
@@Пинагод Lucifer- the Devil- was god's favored angel, and the most beautiful angel. Note that the name Lucifer means "Morning star"- oddly enough, the morning star (as there is a celestial body called that) is, in fact, the planet Venus, named for the roman god of beauty. Satan, if memory serves, is a different angel, whose name means 'adversary', or 'enemy'. Hence the confusion, as linguistic drift likely wound up causing 'adversary/enemy' to be used to refer to the Devil (a title given to Lucifer) , the great enemy, so to speak. This interpretation quite clearly explains a few things, such as why Satan is suddenly in heaven in the book of Job after being cast out (Satan was always there, while Lucifer was cast out), as well as why Jesus called Peter 'Satan' in the garden of Gethsemane; he's telling Peter that he's doing the opposite of what he should; his actions are 'satan' (adverse) to what Jesus wants. Sadly, most "Christians" probably don't give a crap bout historical context for things. Like how the parable of the Good Samaritan is literally Jesus telling his followers to be kind to people they hate (He was telling it to Jews, who hated Samaritans with a burning passion; important Jewish figures ignored the poor guy, but the Samaritan? The horrible person they hate? He was the kind person). Yet how many self-proclaimed Christians are advocating for the rights of, say, gay people, Muslims, people who want abortions, or literally anyone aside from themselves.

One plausible explanation that I've read is that most Christian movie-makers see their films as some sort of ministry first, and as an entertainment vehicle second (if at all). The result is that you get a lot of films that are sincere in their belief, but really amateurish to look at. It probably does not help that many of the most devout people see the film industry as inherently godless and thus don't go to film school to learn how to make better faith-based movies.

The problem with Christian media is that the people making it in earnest usually are of the opinion that the message is the most important part of the film, and to not have it at the forefront is sacrilegious. But you just can't do that if you're trying to draw in outsiders. VeggieTales is good because the jokes are hilarious, the Christian message is there but the jokes are what draw people in. Prince of Egypt is a dramatic story of two brothers falling apart as their destinies bring them in conflict, it's still the same Biblical story with all the religious context but it draws in the audience with the human drama. You can't just be fanatical, you've gotta be able to entertain people with that relatable foundation.
@danielmaster8776 Жыл бұрын
The fact is that Christians can't relate to many people anymore. Maybe 20 years ago. But when right and wrong became commonly accepted as subjective, we were doomed in that purpose.

One of my industry friends, the late Luis Contreras (head of story on Veggietales), we got to talking once about why "321 Penguins" was such a flop, and I remember pointing out that it was just so much more of a typical Christian thing - that among other things, the problems are always solved by quoting an adult - and it preached entirely to the choir. He was sincerely religious, but he also did want the films to be loved, and he said most people in his position legitimately don't get how a non-christian thinks... I remember positing "maybe that's why I take C.S. Lewis more easily. He was an atheist for twenty years. He doesn't think Jesus is either comfortable or obvious." Luis was great. I miss him.

I quote "There is even a country that believes monkeys are their leaders and are spiritual beings, isn't that silly?" and rolling eyes. They would say they are "saving them" from themselves.

the most unrealistic part of this film is that a mother of 4 complained about a music singer attempting to turn her kids christian, and actually being let go because of that. Normally it's the other way around (pearl clutching mother complaining about "Evil Satanic Music corrupting her children) and as long as that singer makes the records money, it's incredibly likely for them to be let go for any reason. I mean, she'd probably be moved to a Christian Rock label at the worst.

That whole scene really rubbed me the wrong way. It’s that text book idea of “oh we’re being oppressed for our faith in god” when in reality Christianity is one of the largest and most powerful religions in the worlds, and especially in the western world. It would be the Christians complaining about some queer, cultural minority, religious ministry, etc. music rather than people complaining about Christian music.

The closest thing I've seen to evidence for speaking in tongues is that my mom said it happened to her, and she definitely wouldn't lie to me about a thing like that. She, however, was clearly somewhat delusional (I know this for reasons unrelated to the tongues) though she never admitted it and got help for it. So I am guessing it was just her having an episode of delirium, as she often did. It's just an interesting 'coincidence' how the only people who speak in tongues are people with a money or publicity motive, serial liars, and delirious/delusional people. I am not even saying this in an aggressive manner. It's just my actual observation that this never seems to happen in a scenario that doesn't raise suspicion of ulterior motives or reasoning.

The gibberish “speaking in tongues” is very cringe to me as a Catholic. As I understand it, to speak in tongues (at least one version) is to basically preach the gospel to a bunch of people of different languages and they can all hear it in their own language. It’s basically the antitype of the tower of babel. One anecdotal story I heard (forget where) that relates to an actual speaking in tongues was when a priest or deacon felt called to talk to a particular Ukrainian lady. She opened up that she was considering suicide, and after she was convinced not to do that, later the priest found out that she didn’t know a lick of English and thought the priest was speaking in Ukrainian, likewise the priest thought she was speaking English.

Mission trips are usually about spreading the Gospel. And yes, typically something else like services will accompany it. However, giving the good news of the fact that we have a savior is more valuable than anything. It is about our eternal soul. Our life on Earth does not match that time. If you knew that a car had a broken break, it would be loving for you to tell the man who wants to drive it that he may die if he were to get into it, even if he doesn’t believe you. It’s similar to telling people about how we are sinners whose good works are not a way into heaven (you can’t bribe a judge; and we would always feel as if we fall short in trying to be a good person). We think we are good, but we arent; we are liars, adulterers, thieves, blasphemers, etc. However, God loves us so much that Christ died for us, paying the price and doing all the hard work for us, so that we could have eternal life. All we have to do is accept that free gift. One can not receive a gift and payment of fines if they don’t accept it. Especially, they cannot accept that gift if they don’t realize it’s something they need.

When I was young I wanted to work with my church to make better Christian media. I wanted to make word-for-word animations of Bible stories with all the blood and guts intact. I even planned out a take on the book of Revelations. My pastors were not into it and I'm really glad they weren't. It would likely have ended up this way or worse. The cult-like mentality a lot of Christians have and the lack of willingness to go beyond Sunday school level interpretations of the Bible really hold back what could be fun stories and highlight a lot of what people don't like about the church.

You are referring to the statue "Le génie du mal" (The genius of evil) first sculpted by Joseph Geefs. It was considered too provocative, mostly for the pose (the legs crossed, an hand on his thigh and the way he's slightly reclined behind, as if he's inviting the viewer), the fact he was way too calm and confrontarble for a fallen angel, his pretty boy face, the ephebic body, the long hair and his confident expression. So they called his older brother, Guillaume Geefs, to remake it, and so he did, buffing him up and turning his expression to a furious one, deforming his face and eliminating the "cute" factor. Most prefer the second version, probably because he's way more detailed, has more dynamism and beefy men are usually considered attractive. For whatever it matters I prefer the first one though.

The whole "Satan as prosecutor" thing is actually another biblically accurate detail - the word "Satan" itself iirc comes from a mistranslation, being mistaken for a name when the word in the original language means "prosecutor". The satan/prosecutor was just the guy you're on trial against when you die, just one of many angelic bureaucrats processing the souls of the dead, lol. Over time, other sort of characters/incarnations of "bad things" got wrapped together and blamed on the one satan who was your prosecutor, who morphed into not just one angel lawyer, but _the_ angel lawyer jerkhole who not only wanted to keep you out of heaven, but _also_ send you to his own hell place (which is also a later addition).

@lovelydreamingtime9563 Жыл бұрын
Is that how we got the phrase “devil’s advocate”?
@KingBobXVI Жыл бұрын
@@lovelydreamingtime9563 - nope, though that's an interesting thought, and maybe there's some connection I'm unaware of. The "devil" didn't exist at all as a concept in this case, he was later derived from this figure as more or less fan-fiction, lol. The prosecutor worked for God, not some devil (Christianity is supposed to be monotheistic, after all, not bi-theistic). The term "devil's advocate" iirc comes from a practice by missionaries in medieval times (when the devil fanon was well established). The idea is that if you're going to send out people on a mission to convert non-believers, they need to be well equipped for the kinds of arguments they're likely to face - you don't want to send someone out unprepared. The devil's advocate would be another member of the monastery taking part in a mock argument for practice. His goal was to argue against god, where the missionary was to argue in favor. The devil's advocate was to present arguments in good faith, making points that actual potential converts or detractors might make - if a devil's advocate didn't understand the counterargument, or presented it poorly or as a strawman so to speak, it wouldn't be useful practice and would lead to missionaries being unprepared (and maybe more susceptible to being covered away). That last point is something where the term "devil's advocate" gets misused often imo - if someone is just being a rote contrarian, or sarcastically making bad arguments to make fun of the side they disagree with, or as is often the case, just sincerely believes and argues for something they know is unpopular, they're not really being a devil's advocate. A devil's advocate is only when arguing in good faith ("steelmanning") in favor of a stance they disagree with - usually for something like debate practice, but it can also be a good method of checking your own set of beliefs and biases by challenging them (and thus reinforcing them... or, possibly, updating them).

@carniethedat7071 Жыл бұрын
Yeah... this movie just confirms something that I've always thought about the vast majority of Christian-oriented entertainment. You have stuff like The Prince of Egypt, or Veggie Tales. Stories that focus on the interplay between larger-than-life characters with a solid narrative from beginning to end. Stories that focus on the human condition while pulling from stories that so happen to come from a 2000-year-old holy book. Then you have these types of movies. The Christian circlejerk stories where the "true believers" are always pure and good regardless of their actions. The ones where anything other than the perfect Western version of Christianity is portrayed as violent, evil, or just corrupt simply through existing. The ones that don't rely on having meaningful and consistent stories, but rather rely solely on pandering to the holier-than-thou attitudes of those who are so caught up in their zealous and self-absorbed version of faith that they develop a persecution complex. And the worst part is that it's all unironic. There's a reason these movies are divisive, and it really boils down to the fact that there's nothing for people outside of the in-group to relate to. You could watch The Prince of Egypt and relate to the brotherly struggle between Ramses and Moses. You could relate to Moses growing past the trauma of killing a man, even if it was an accident. You could even relate to Ramses' rage and search for revenge after the death of his only son and Moses' rejection. In terms of Veggie Tales, you could laugh along at the zany antics that these walking, talking vegetables get themselves into. You could relate to the more serious notes and strong moral lessons that permeated many of the episodes, most of which were very general and widely applicable. Yet it's impossible to watch this movie and get any sort of neutral value out of it; it's written *by* Christians, *for* Christians, and nobody else. The whole thing shows that other belief systems should be destroyed, and their leaders outright killed. It shows that even in death, "believers" have duties to help bring about the end of the world. It's literally all the most harmful and toxic parts of modern Christianity balled up into a single film with the lesson that this is the ultimate goal people should strive for. But hey, at least the visuals are better than average, right? It's also nice to see biblically accurate angels and a super-sexy Lucifer for once! There's always a silver lining, no matter how thin.
@danielmaster8776 Жыл бұрын
I agree with most of what you're saying. The problem with most Christian movies, including this one, is that you have to know about the Gospel and Biblical metaphors to understand it. But I don't think that's a problem that can be solved without taking half the movie to explain everything. Your only other option is making it super generic so that just about anybody can understand it. The movie does suffer from a poor choice of words at multiple points, like, "My life means nothing." which is completely not biblical. When it comes to how the movie creators view other cultures, I only disagree with the methods. We don't need to destroy people, but we should attempt to convert them. When a group of people become Christian, they mix it in with their own culture in the best way they can. Sometimes bad customs are thrown out because they conflict with the Gospel, and other times they're unfortunately left in. That's what's wrong with places like America, Mexico, Germany, Russia, because everybody's too busy drinking to be fully-fledged Christians. They take alcohol, or sometimes other local customs like ancestor worship in Asia, as their gods. God said, "You shall have no other gods before me." He's not saying this just because he's a jealous god. He gives us this warning, because everything good comes from God, so if you're not worshipping him, you're worshipping something of this world, something evil. The devil has domain over this world until further notice, not having any real power over us, but leading us to temptation which leads to sin. None of us are free of sin either; we're all broken people. But God uses broken people to do his work, because Jesus died for our sins so that if we just make him Lord, we don't have to go to Hell by default. That's why cultures, including ours, that don't embrace Christianity or that wage war against it are hastening this world's ruin. The unwitting servants of the devil advocate for rejection of Jesus, rejection of the concept of sin, pride, false gods, and zero accountability. That's why the real problem with many modern Christians is that they don't push back against these people, because they're afraid to offend, or think that these people are actually somehow right, "because compassion." Compassion doesn't mean aiding and abetting people's journey to Hell.

If we ignore our dislike for bible stuff, it's a passionate labour of love that was written by a kid that lacks experience in writing stories and life. It's written from inside his bubble, that's why it feels "cringe" but to be honest? I really hope the kid keeps creating stories, gains experience, and with that, hopefully, a more critical outlook on life and indoctrination. There's potential and something that's almost worth more: dedication. No guarantee but I think there's a good chance that this kid might amaze us with something five or ten years from now. It's like reading a teen's first fan fiction. I like to do that from time to time. Not because of the prose, storytelling, structure, dialogue, or characters. Those are usually between bad (needs to be learned from scratch) and 'there's something there!' (not polished and with lots of room for improvement, but the writer has a knack for that thing that will make learning to do it well much easier). But they're always labours of love with a passion for the thing they love while having the eagerness to express it. If you look at creations from newbies like that (even if you're iffy about the subject matter but eh, kids.), it can be sobering. Why? Because sooner or later, as the craft expands and the skills improve and we began to fully grasp the mechanics behind stories and how to make them work with our words and how we place them, we often get so obsessed over the right technique that we forget how it was to feel this raw love and passion for the stories we wanted to tell, before we cared more about the "how", word counts, formatting, and the neverending battle between tropes vs clichés vs classic themes. Basically, creating felt when we once started. This kid will hear a lot of brutal shit for this movie, justified and not justified. I hope he'll keep going anyway and when he is a little older and more mature, he can look back at this and say, "Holy shit, what was I thinking? Forget brutal, the worst criticism was gentle! But hey, it was a first big step to a long journey and for that, I love it."
