I ran into same type of problem, when I recently restored an old Teisco Spectrum 4 guitar... The neck had a severe back-bow, and the truss rod was doing nothing.. loosened all the way off... I restored it... completely... I removed the frets, steamed out the inlays, sanded the board back straight (7.25" radius), re-inlayed the inlays, refretted the guitar, dressed the frets, beveled them, leveled them, crowned them and polished them. Turned out great, and the guitar is in excellent playing condition now! I had the time to do the job properly, and that's why I did it, but it's time consuming, that's for sure. The easy answer will always be to just get a new neck, but if the original neck is rescuable, then I would fight for it! Have a great weekend you all! Cheers 🍻

I have gotten more than one guitar with a badly back-bowed neck. If the truss rod isn't broken, I set the neck in a metal neck-straightening fixture (otherwise known as a folding metal chair), attach a motorcycle strap to pull the neck to a more bowed position (with the truss rod loosened, of course), apply heat via a small camp stove for an hour or so, then turn off the heat and wait until the neck is room temperature. Voila, the neck has enough bow to work with.

Ive watched many of your vids and I enjoy them and have learned a couple of things along the way perhaps I can share a couple of ideas that Ive used to correct the same issue (that is a truss rod with the nut slacked completely off and still the neck was too straight or had a slight reverse bow , , I bought an old LP copy for $20 , with a badly bowed neck plus a twist I used a moist tile wrapped around the neck then placed aq heating pad wrapped around the moist towel, set on highest temp , leaving it for a day or more if need be , using a windex bottle to moisten the towel every few hours , I WAS ABLE TO GET THE TWIST OUT ,THE BOW WAS A NO BRAINER .......TO PUT MORE BOW BACK INTO THE NECK i put 4 other old low E's and A's strings on the guitar , wound them tighter than A- 440 just guessing a whole step higher in tension actual pitch was no concern , the heavier ga. , plus the higher tension from over tuning those wound strings plus that same moist heat the neck bowed enough and stayed bowed so that the truss rod nut could do what it was supposed to do ,Another guitar with the same problem I used nylon twine the heavier construction type twine ,made a doubled loop around the headstock and the rear strap lock using a wooden pencil or anything straight and long enough to twist the looped now looped string tight enough so that the wood blocks can be inserted and held in place ( the length of the pencil or whatever used will easily hold itself against the guitar body or neck , like twisting a rubber band , ,inserting the wood blocks where you think they need to be , w3ith the now slightly tightened loop of string rest atop the wood blocks on the neck letting you tighten the loop ed string as much as you want , it wont break but twisting the looped nylon string until it forces the neck back into it's bowed shape by its tention pulling upwards on the head stock and the blocks of wood forcing the center area of the neck downwards until you get the neck to remain bowed when all the tension is relieved , it may take a little heat and moist towel but it has worked for me every single time for putting bow back into a neck . so the truss has something to work against , sometimes in less than an hour other times its taken an entire day to get the results and the results stay when the all tension is removed from the neck .....a lot cheaper than giving up on it and buying n expensive new neck btw the wooden blocks mention were just cut pieces of 1 x 4 board with about 2-3 inches of height to raise the the looped strings that you twisted

I love my 1972 Fender Telecaster Custom. It is a walnut brown with a black pick guard. I think it only has two scratches. This one has the truss or the adjustable rod sticking out of the top of head. I still have the original Fender Case. It is funny that the guitar only costs 375.00 in 1972 and the Fender case cost 75.00 dollars. Now it is no wonder how much it is worth today in 2019. What would be your guess?

Strip the hardware off the neck clamp the neck with wood and clamps forming the curve you want in the right place. Put it in the oven at 120 F for 1 hour and the relief will come back. Take the clamps off after it cools. I have fixed many with this method. Don't back the truss rod off to fix a back bow or you will just pop the plug . Leave it in the nutral position before you put in oven.

Tune it way up so that it gets some relief and put a heat lamp on it to soften the glue between the neck and fingerboard. If that doesn't help try agina. If it's a one piece neck, pull the frets and plane it flat with a radiused sanding block and refret.

Dave I told you once before, maybe you missed it. This is the last time I will tell you how to adjust a neck when the truss rod does not work. Use heat, wood bends toward heat! If this one has too muck back bow, take the neck off and hold it over an electric stove burner, fret side down. Wood bends toward the heat source. Don't burn the wood! Take your time. Remember how they make the Middle Eastern Oud? The Oud has a body exactly like a Lute. They use heat and bend each piece of wood to a curved shape to build the body. HEAT! They have video's here on you tube showing how to bend wood using heat. Once bent it will not change shape, well unless you do the heat treatment again. You could have very easily have corrected the back bow of this neck using an eclectic stove top. This works, has been working for centuries. I used it to change the profile of my cheap ass Bullet Stratocaster several years ago because the truss rod never ever worked from when new. Now the neck on that guitar is correct! I saved it from the trash bin/fire place. People these day's are so caught up in technology that they don't 'effin think! Don't be too proud to use a centuries old technique to bend wood. Remember there is more than one way to skin a cat/solve a problem. Apply the heat in the exact middle of the bend, back bow. Do it in several treatments so as to not over do it and not to burn the wood. If you are too chicken, then just walk out into your yard and find any piece of dead wood on the ground not a 2x4 but a tree branch and it heat to bend it. If you are still worried then find a straight piece of wood of a somewhat similar size and thickness of a guitar neck and use heat to bend it. It's not rocket science, it's what a good Luther would do when an original design like a crapy truss rod fails, he uses an alternate method to bend the neck. -Pete

Unless it's heated to the point of torriefaction, there's a fair chance that it will go back. It could be stuffed in a jig for a couple of months and exposed to changing moisture and temperature (to give it bow instead of back bow), or frets pulled and hand planed. All of those things would probably cost about the same as a new neck (making a jig would be cheap, but I doubt a customer would want to wait a few months for a maybe).

I think the idea is to glue the truss rod plug more securely, so when you unscrew the rod the pushing of the nut against the plug makes the rod work like a two way. Those walnut plugs are meant to be glued in anyway and you can just drill them out instead, Fender sells replacements for $10 or something.

So please explain for a dummy how a truss rod gets gooched. Do the threads holding on the nut get stripped? Does one end get pulled loose from being anchored so no tension is possible? Inquiring minds want to know.
@gryzew
@gryzew 5 жыл бұрын
Truss rod is fine, it's just a one-way rod so it can't do shit about back bow. Neck wood rarely gets warped into a backbow by itself as strings normally pull it the other way, but you can screw up a guitar like that if you remove the strings without loosening the rod (so it gets into a backbow as the rod is working but the strings are not) and keep it like that especially for a longer time. The more you keep a neck out of adjustment the more the wood gets used to that as its default position.
@stephenhookings1985
@stephenhookings1985 5 жыл бұрын
@@gryzew - and doing the reverse? Could that cure it? I presume the big issue is getting the anti-bend to follow exact same path as bend else it will become twisted or some sort of S/Z bend. As others said- get a new neck and try to avoid angering the new one. Or try a cheap Telecaster (like the SX I got recently). If that foobar I can BBQ with it and get another guitar.

I'd try putting a thin shim under the nut and try that. 4 thou neck relief might be ok if the first fret action is dealt with. However, a new neck would be the better solution obviously.
@gryzew
@gryzew 5 жыл бұрын
I think an extra spacer under the nut is a thing you might do when you have too much relief (forward bow) for the truss rod to correct. It won't do shit with a single action truss rod and back bow. But in any case I would still prefer to do what Dave often does, meaning: correct the curve with clamps and then tighten the rod without any extra spacer involved. When you try to straighten a very bent neck just with the rod you're only risking breaking it.
@gryzew

@@gryzew It looked like Dave was somehow able to get rid of the back now and get the neck to 4 thou relief - meaning the back now went away. He likes 8 to 12 thou relief, but I think 4 thou could work so long as the first fret action was raised thru a higher nut.

@@gryzew Raise the nut by about 20 thou, cut the nut grooves deeper by about 10 thou, and it might work. But a new neck is obviously the better route.

@@roytofilovski9530 meh, then winter comes, the air gets dry, suddenly you've got backbow again with strings on. It needs to be within expected adjustability range to be a reliable instrument rather than having it barely there and dutifully saying a daily prayer that it stays there. "Hobbyist" fixes (ie. clamp it, heat it, leave it) are fine to try as they mainly cost time and don't require much skill and precision as long as you know what you're doing enough to not damage the finish etc. But it's a coin toss, it might go back to being backbowed. "Proper" fix would only be "invasive surgery" type of luthiery, relevel the fretboard, or if it's a two piece unglue the fretboard, level the neck wood and reglue the fretboard, even install carbon fibre rods to hold it where you want it, fix or redo the finish after all that - so just by the sound of it it's usually cheaper to just find a replacement neck than pay for that kind of work.

You know how to do the weight on the center, support both ends and heat cycle. It does work. Perfect guitar to buy for pennies on the dollar and fix for $0.

If the neck is straight and there is next to no buzz down the neck. RAISE THE BRIDGE AND SADDLE HEIGHT OF THE STRINGS!. If its a reverse bow then yeah, replace the neck. Dont mess around with the plug B.S.
