Okay so I haven't seen the video of what actually happened but from what i understand they had a Parad shivling. That means its made of solidified mercury. Basically mercury has the property to "eat up" silver, gold and specifically cobra venom. So they were offering this to the linga and as sadhguru said "how can he offer anything to shiva that he doesnt have first?". Thats why he drank it but on a different note consuming venom has been practiced by mystics, monks and sages for a long time. This is because of the transcendental experience they get. It something like smoking ganja for meditation or having LSD trips. Its an enhancer that puts them in certain state of being, almost paralyzing. Also this is a way of conquering fear and death. Sadhguru has mentioned before that his weakness is that he loves danger and walking on the thin line between life and death. I hope that made sense haha
