Really there always has been a bad culture among fire-arms officers going back to when I was an officer (a normal Plod not a firearms officer). In 1980 (another time of toxic culture reports in the policing leading to the PACE 1985 due to perceived wrong doing of police, again things like Stop and Search, the "Vagrancy Acts 1824 [sus- laws] and Section 60 of MET POL ACT.) a South Coast police force was caught out with a Fire-arms unit shooting dead a suspect - it then came to light that the officers had a "Beer Pot" for whoever shot the suspect. As to the culture of misogyny, there is a "rule" in Police Serials (units) that the youngest probationer or newest starter in a specialist unit does the Scutt work, cleaning floors, making or getting coffee drinks, but the females officers think they should be exempt from this accepted and acceptable practice. As to being a stressful job, from interaction others have had with "armed police" in UK most commonly at airports -there is a bad attitude if not just a level of arrogant thickness, but rudeness and being complete thickos and aᴙseholes, and Mike Neville is well out of date - there is no longer a general ex -service recruitment as an armed officer pool, ex service recruitment went away with the changes in policing that demanded an under Grad, degree to join - which doesn't seem to work well in MET either. But other countries manage, both in Sweden, France, Germany, Canada even in USA where all officers are armed there isn't this toxicity problem, and they have SWATT Teams, and incidentally before any woke tϣat whataboutist chips in, most US police officers go through their entire career without actively deploying they weapons, which is just as well as outside SWATT only 15% of shot fired were on target at the last count.

We are constantly told that 'Stop and Search' is a 'racist' policy, but conversely we are also told that the Police are failing to get a grip on knife crime and this is down to 'institutional racism'.. However, what we are never told is how many of these 'Stop and Search' actions find individuals who are carrying weapons or who are involved in other criminal activity such as drug dealing/running etc.. I'm no fan of the Metropolitan Police but it seems that if they fail to take reasonable steps to prevent knife crime they are branded as 'racist'.. and if they DO take reasonable steps to prevent knife crime they are branded as 'racist'.. I'm sure that if the 'Stop and Search' policy was not finding substantial amounts of knife carrying the Police would have dropped it long ago..

Anyone trusted with a lethal weapon may serve the function of stopping crime or protecting the public, but they are expected to do so through the use of extreme violence. That requires a particular type of person, and historically this is why they were all men. If we cannot stop men from acting in ways that we do not like, then perhaps we should stop women from joining their teams. Men are more aggressive, more physically intimidating and are better equipped for physical confrontation. Some women may be outliers in this regard, but for the most part this is a role that men are better suited to.
