In a world where any huckster on this website can completely fabricate some clickbait video about "whoa look at this new leak/reveal/rumor" for easy views, it is so nice to see someone like Bradley who not only shows his work, but makes sure to temper expectations and offer disclaimers. Just an absolute blessing to this community. Also it's pretty funny that now any time I see a video or news article about upcoming VR hardware there's like a 90% chance that it's pretty much a copy/paste job from Bradley's investigative work.

For those of you wishing to see a display port on Quest 3 forget about it. Meta is all about standalone and doesn't want you to buy their subsidized headsets to play steam games only. If I was a betting man I would say 2024 is when we will see the Deckard but you just never know with Valve. One thing I know for sure is that this will be my first preorder without even waiting for reviews cause I know that Valve will deliver. I said it before and I'll say it again Brad deserves the first Deckard for all the efforts he puts in these videos. Thanks again for this.

The Steam Deck gives me a lot of confidence that Valve will do well whenever they announce this product. I also expect consumer confidence to be high since they've done so well lately with software support, product quality, repairability, customer service, openness and third party support. If their current way of working is anything to go by, this headset will be a safe investment regardless of cost. I'm hyped!

The whole situation is really frustrating as someone who has an Oculus CV1 and is kinda desperate to upgrade. I understand that Valve is tight lipped and doesn't want to commit to something that's still in the air, but if they just came out and said "we will not release a new VR headset in the next 12 months at least" or "we are aiming to make sure all of your existing base stations are compatible with any next-generation hardware" or anything like that I would buy an Index tomorrow. Instead I'm left in this constant state of uncertainty and not wanting to buy into the system only to have it invalidated 6 months from now.

That was an amazingly comprehensive info dump. Thanks! If Deckard ends up being a "split-compute" architecture, with the Snapdragon dealing with everything VR (pose calculation, controller tracking, reprojection, eyetracking), and the AMD Little Phoenix being free to just run and render the game, it could be an amazingly powerful and efficient standalone device. Sadly, it doesn't seem like Deckard will launch anytime soon, late 2023 at the earliest I'd think. I've been thinking about getting a Pico 4 in the meantime, and that option has just got more attractive. Or do you see any other standalone (non-Meta) headsets launching in the nearer future?

Okay, hear me out. I think Valve tries (or has found) a way to use passive retroreflectors placed in the room and some form of laser emitter on the HMD to create a sort of inside-out laser-based tracking integrated into the headset (or rear unit). Why? I think the "Prism" option is a strong indicator for this, it could refer to using "Prisms" as the reflectors and enabling it switches between "Lighthouse-mode" or "inside-out-mode". In the latter mode the HMD emits the laser rays and passive reflectors allow tracking of the Controllers. This could allow re-using the excellent Index-Controllers for this new HMD in the inside-out mode and allow existing lighthouse users to keep using those for tracking. This would still rely on the HMD itself tracking within the room using cameras.

I finally finished the whole video. I will say you did a good job. You covered EVERYTHING to wanted to and that was important, I subscribed for that reason. Long videos don't bother me I have been known to listen to 4-5 hour discussion videos. It would be cool if the steam deck could be paired with a 4090 to drive 4k at 120hz and dlss 3.0, something AMD's RDNA 1,2, and soon to be release 3 do not support. maybe valve can morph the desk into an intel style NUC which is modular and can be expanded for video card upgrades while docked. Both the deck and Index are gen one products with the latter being ourdated at launch using HTC vive tech, but paired great controllers if you ignore the require meat for base stations. I disagree about using the lighthouse system via USB and not an addon card that uses the PCI-e bus instead. A) the USB bus requires cpu processing time thus creating higher response times making USB a bad idea for VR. I sold my prior two HMDs because of this. I also had the rift S and never used it because it required an oculus account just to get the drivers which later changed to an FB account. I have no interest is giving facebutt my personal data. C) I'd like HMD makers to process input via PCI-e for the lowest response time, but it's not a deal breaker if they can limit everything to one USB 4 connection. D) I am honestly waiting on valve to create a an HMD plus controller set that can use inside out tracking with maybe USB 4 support, or at least USB 3.1 gen 2. If I wanted to use base stations I would would have stuck with the original rift would allowed for four stations to be setup. It had major USB problems and didn't stick around. The HTC vive was meh.

Bravo, Brad - this video is so well put together, well organized and articulated! Amazing work as always and thanks for doing what you do :D Question about the split rendering - you mentioned that you believe the XR2 may end up being responsible for handling some reprojection (and tracking data?) which would (presumably) lighten some of the load for PCVR. Do we have any evidence that the onboard GPU would be capable of handling certain split rendering tasks as well, or would this be solely relegated to standalone functionality? It would seem to be such a waste to have such a powerful onboard GPU that is basically vestigial when it comes to PCVR. Or I suppose the entire standalone functionality/GPU/battery could be introduced as an upgradeable "module"?

All I know is Guy Godin of Virtual Desktop said that the XR2 is pretty limited in what it can do for “split rendering” so having a more powerful chip could improve the experience dramatically even if the GPU isn’t being used 100% like quest 2

That dual dial design will be nice for handing over the headset to others. Hopefully they also have a good quality automatic IPD adjustment.

What I really want to know are the potential GPU requirements. Right now for current / last gen VR devices they're obviously pretty high. Things like eye tracking & split rendering could potentially reduce such requirements, but higher resolutions on the other hand could also increase it, making it a trade-off the devs have to decide for the final product. Especially with the next gpu generation coming out now, and me still crawling around with a used RX 580 4GB, I kinda want to know in what to invest in with my limited budget.

I hope the new headset has both base station and station less tracking, as for people who already own the lighthouses it will give accurate tracking and for people who don't have the lighthouses will still get tracking anyway.

Having the option, or even a hybrid mode would be awesome, as inside-out tracking + basestations could cover the weaknesses of both

at 13:45 Those Loops you discuss are actually taken from the 2016 HTC Vive. It is to hold the main PC Link cable to the headset past the ears. It is a more comfortable position for the cable management of the headset. So, I do believe that this headset is either going to be full tether or a Hybrid between Tether and Standalone.

This is the headset I want more than any other. Pico 4 wasn't as good as I'd hoped, but I'll keep it until this is released. If anyone had to GUESS, what we thinking? late 2023? 2024?

I mean the original plan with the Index was that it had the front plate accessory slot for future extendability, which was left all but unused, hopefully with this deckard modularity there will be aftermarket upgrades and accessories available.
