In case you missed it for the new SteamVR Beta (1.26.1), the controllers are no longer inside out on Linux. Async Reprojection functions good enough on Wayland (from 1.25). Currently, the biggest issue appears to be Overlay Wobble/Jitter/Artifacting (Issue 395). Also WlxOverlay.

This headset, just from looking at it, is precisely what I think the future will look like for VR. Hilarious Brad that you, of all people, are scared by the fact that it's so easy to pass the time in it haha. Love to hear it haha. I think that comfort is really maybe the #1 thing holding VR back though for real -- more so than high fidelity graphics (though this will be something that will come over time). It has to be as easy and as simple as booting up your controller on a console or a pair of glasses. What prevents me from a full day of VR gaming versus flatscreen is usually some mix of comfort and ease of use of the software. Thanks for keeping us in the loop! :)

Thanks for your impressions. If all of that is true, the beyond is a big disappointment. So keep waiting for those 5000-10000 nit Micro OLED screens which will better match the pancake lenses and anti-reflection precautions. My next PC HMD will be probably "unfortunately" one with a Mini LED backlight.

@@Woopass90 That's your opinion. I don't need an OLED HMD that is as "bright" as an Arpara VR (maybe a bit brighter if you run it at maximum brightness). I thought the far more advanced MicroOLED panels would be used here, but i'm disappointed with what they will offer. + No audio solution, no eye tracking, €1400. I guess maybe in 2 years there will be really good MicroOLED VR HMDs.

Ikr? I've been thinking about how down fov is more important than up fov , because we have tendency to look to our hand and where we put feet. And i had a problem with the vive pro 2 having the sweet spot low in the lenses which make the up fov bigger than the low fov. And no reviewer was talking about that at the time. It's the first time i heard a KZbinr adresses this point

I’m VP2 also but won’t go in direction because I think the FOV and no wireless will be a bigger issue than the gain of comfort. Would love your thoughts though.
@fettuccine723
@fettuccine723 Жыл бұрын
@@BB-qp5xo for me I don't think the field of view is going to be that big of a deal, It will certainly be less than the pro 2, but I don't think the field of view was ever that groundbreaking on it in the first place honestly. Like going back to a quest 2 The biggest thing I miss is the clarity and the colors, I don't mind the field of view too much, and if the clarity and the colors are even better than the quest 2 I think it would make it an even better experience. I'm going to try playing with the display pushed back a little bit (that button on the left that pushes it back) for like a week before the headset arrives so I'm used to a smaller field of view lol. I feel like If enough of the product testers say that the field of view is good enough while having experienced headsets like the pimax and the Vive pro 2 it's probably not going to be as bad as people think, the only headset that I ever truly noticed it and couldn't get immersed was the HP reverb G2 and I think this will definitely be a step up in terms of field of view. As for wireless I could definitely see how that's a downgrade for you, personally I don't use the wireless since I like having it at full resolution and 99% of the time I play sitting down (I have a big recliner in the center of the room, it's awesome because you can spin really fast and if you're playing VR chat for like 10 hours sometimes you just want to sit down crisscross applesauce, lay down, sit up, all that stuff it's super comfortable lol) so for me the cable isn't a big deal at all, I thought the quest 2 was the coolest thing when it came out but then I realized with streaming the compression was bad, and biggest of all was the battery life like I know I sound like a mega loser but there's sometimes where I will be in VR for over 10 hours and I'll see so many quest people tap out so quickly because they have to charge, the only ones that don't are tethered to the wall and it defeats the purpose since they're plugged in anyway lol. So for me the wire wouldn't be an issue, but in your shoes it would definitely be a deal breaker especially for a thousand bucks it's not something you could really just pick up and be like we'll see how this works out lol.

@@sYd6point7 ya I think the fov is one of those things where it sounds terrible but isn't that bad in person, I think brad especially would really be complaining about the fov hard if it was a super big deal, either way I'm excited there's finally going to be some more mainstream high end high resolution headsets with good color, the biggest reason I want to upgrade is because of the glare so I hope it's not as bad

The gameplay looked a bit choppy, that happens when you record stuff in steamvr (with the steamvr viewer) beause of a bug valve doesn't care about. Maybe there is a fix? The obs plugin seems to have same issue. I use the index because of 120hz seems to record smooth gameplay. That's quite an issue I think. Will ye be our champion Sir Bradley?

That mic reveal was awesome haha. Was excited to see this review but honestly, just sucks that it feels like this is yet another product brimming with potential. I can't believe that there still isn't a straight upgrade from the Index out in the market right now. This headset seems like it does a lot of things great, but the negatives that you listed are a turn-off, especially for someone who does more gaming/sim-racing than social VR stuff. Not having built-in audio, and a smaller FOV, is so much of a downgrade for my experience... Hope they do find some success in the market with this one so they continue to iterate on this in the future. But, back to twiddling my thumbs waiting on something to upgrade from the Index... Nice video Brad. Thanks for the content.

Honestly at this point I'd even buy an Index refresher with higher res. Although if Pico4 didn't made a glaring omission of not including a display port or hdmi for wired high-res PCVR, I would switch to the Pico. FOV is comparable and the pancake lenses are sweet... Maybe in Pico5? 🤞

Tbh I think Crystal is what you want, Index audio + Index FOV + Varjo Clarity + near OLED contrast and colors..... For sim racers having heavy headset is not a big of a deal cause you don't move alot, for me 8KX more comfortable than PSVR 2 I'm having for sim racing.... If you use fast paced standing games then Bigscreen better for comfort levels and FOV becomes less of an issue.... I have Arpara 5K which is also same resolution + Micro OLED and the clarity blew my mind away but FOV + blurriness in edges turned me off compared to 8KX... So I ordered Crystal over Bigscreen for my Sim racing + flight sim experience

Great to see custom face gaskets. Definitely looking forward to more ergonomic VR -- comfort and ease of use is a huge factor for retention in my opinion. I really wish more companies would try to push FOV more, and true-to-eye high brightness with perfect blacks. Lately, I do mostly sim racing in VR. Comfort and software glitches are always a limiting factor for me to playing more (HP Reverb G2 has pretty decent comfort, but the software glitches and faulty cables you can't buy replacements for a reasonable price, or at all, has made we just want to go back to my quest...) I'm hoping to see more big PC VR players pushing game engines and graphics hardware innovation to create better performance. Sadly, since Oculus left the PC market, I haven't seen any NVIDA marketing boasting new VR-centric features. Here's hoping Valve will save the day with Deckard. All these high resolution displays are great, but pretty much no sim-titles can run at a high refresh rate without turning down graphical settings, even on a 3080Ti.

Right, so looks like this is finally the next headset I have been waiting for. Great preview, I'm so glad it's turned out to be near enough as good as I hoped for! Well done for persuading the Bigscreen team to add an optional basic top strap in the box for every headset! That's significant. Clearly as you describe, this headset is the first headset to actually nail comfort, but that would have been severely hampered without that top strap as you detailed. Hopefully when people get units to review, this will include that basic top strap at the very least, and hopefully they also supply to option rigid audio strap to give reviewers the best experience. It's a shame that those like yourself trying this headset out right now have been using the default strap, I hope that doesn't ruin initial impressions from others regarding just how comfortable this headset really is!

Really interesting to hear about this glimpse at a possible future. I personally really want a micro-oled headset with aspherical lenses to get that maximum brightness. No idea if its possible to magnify a uoled panel that much lol. @GaaraSama1983
@GaaraSama1983 Жыл бұрын
The thing is with aspheric lenses you would need to sacrifice this kind of 2nd gen form factor and weight as it also means the lens needs to be farther away from the display = front heavy headset again. IMO we should stick to pancake, improve upon it and 1-2 years in the future uOLED displays will also be a lot brighter.
@Drischa
@Drischa Жыл бұрын
@@GaaraSama1983 I'm ok with having a slightly heavier headset as long as it's well balanced, this is where top straps are especially important. There is no solution for everyone - much like any other tech people will have preferences - I'm certain that in the future I will have a pancake lens mobile headset that I take with me places where I value portability, and an aspheric one for home use where I want better brightness. Different applications for each, I don't think we should chase a 'universal' solution until each niche's technology has been given a chance to mature.

This is the (almost) perfect alternative to the Index I have been wanting for a long time now. The poor durability of the Index HMD really put me off upgrading to it from my original Vive HMD, even if the Index does do everything but durability better than the Vive. I already have Basestations, and I have the Index knuckles, so when I rake in enough money, I may buy this HMD since I'd say what the Beyond has to offer warrants upgrading to it over the Index

Comfort really needs to be a bigger talking point when talking about the value of a VR headset because like you said, it really helps with retention, which is a problem myself and everyone around me has with VR. The appeal to why I might be buying this is purely because of it's weight and size which leads to comfort. Finally not worrying about "VR Tears" of sweat when playing beat saber for more than 20minutes due to breathability and heat, and becoming a workout tool IS the appeal.

The screen door effect is probably mitigated by the fact that the lenses most likely cant resolve the display fully. Thats one major issue in micro oleds, when the pixels are micron sized you need extremely good optics to be able to resolve them. And pancakes simply cant do that.
@Nobody-Nowhere
@Nobody-Nowhere Жыл бұрын
The other big problem is the combination of OLED:s and pancakes, its the worst combination as oleds have a hard cap on light output, unlike LCD panels. And pancakes eat up like 85% of the light.

@@Steror I just dont see why waste all that power into pancake optics, they will just end up generating a lot of heat. In vr, i see no real point in micro oleds. The displays dont really need to be that small.. it just creates issues. Some sort of happy medium would be much better for VR.

I wouldn't be too concerned about brightness personally... I usually have my Index set to about 30% - like Brad said, if your eyes can adjust to it, it's not that bad.

Real interesting what Sony and Bigscreen chose to balance for their OLED headsets, for their targeted audience. I can't say which is right or wrong. I think both did a good job. I love my PSVR2, but I can also see loving using the Bigscreen for media stuff, using their service. As far as audio, I've never been a fan of build in audio... I prefer to use my high end headphones for watching films. For lossless sound (Sony MDR 9.1) or my Haptic Headphones (Razer Kaira Pro Dual PS5 edition).... also if it helps bring down the price for the headset, even better.

The PSVR2 uses an entirely different kind of display to the beyond, OLED Vs Micro-OLED. They are made using entirely different methods and materials. As far as I know, Micro-oleds are just flat out better in every way than OLEDS.

@SadlyItsBradley !!! you mentioned the displays were canted!!! Did you use that trick in the steamVR config I told you about a while back!? Also, Feedback on black frame insertion: I wonder if they couldn't make it every 3rd frame by altering which eye gets the black frame inserted. Also it seems to be top to bottom refresh. I wonder if, like the index, the set the screens vertically instead, left to right refresh might help a bit. Maybe on gen2. Either way sounds like they're doing a lot right. 90hz does seem like a downgrade for people, but I promise with this oled tech it won't be.

Hopefully when fixing the sweet spot issue they take into account that most people would prefer to have more downward field of view (like myself.) I'm looking forward to seeing the finished product as I've been using the index since launch. It would be nice to finally have a vr headset that I would consider an actual "upgrade" over the index for my use case.

A fabulous video Brad! I really am almost wanting to pay the grand for this one. I'm not one to play games so being wired in doesn't bother me, at this time, but I hear 6G for VR is forecasted by 2030 and mobile VR/mixed will have us finally walking the streets wearing HMDs ... until someone shoots us and steals it from us. Was wondering if HMD companies offer owners of a previous iteration/model an allowance to step up to a newer HMD with a trade in? I would/people would be more apt to 'buy now' if this were common I think.

Thanks for the in depth preview. I'm really interested in this headset. If they could have figured out a way to get an Index / Reverb G2 off ear speakers integrated without much additional weight, that would have been fantastic. I also wish my headsets were brighter, so sounds like it's the same issue here.

Ah, now I know what black frame insertion is. I'd always just assumed that 90Hz meant the image was changed 90 times per second but it is not. The image is renewed 90 times per second but the display is turned off between each frame so that your head does not move without the image changing. It's a bit like a strobe light compared to what a strobe light would look like if the image persisted.
