My breakdown & analysis of Safety Not Guaranteed. I'll be going over my interpretation of the meaning behind the story, the character arcs and themes, and the ending. Safety Not Guaranteed is director Colin Trevorrow's directorial debut, three magazine employees head out on an assignment to interview a guy who placed a classified ad seeking a partner for time travel.

Just watched it with the Mrs! Kind of undecided on it tbh - it was alright. I do appreciate, though, how deep of a message each individual storyline delivers while the true plot appears shallow at best. Great video/analysis, bud.

Nice! Yeah man it was like a dual story with multiple ways to interpret it. -on one hand it was a neat quirky rom-com disguised as a time travel movie about emotional time travel -On the other hand it was a neat quirky sci-fi time travel movie disguised as a rom-com about literal time travel. (you should go on reddit and see the different theories on what people think really happened. It's wild. Some people think Kenneth was telling the truth and Belinda actually died and he went back in time and saved Belinda in his first mission but didn't know he saved her. some people think they went back afterwards. Some people think Kenneth didn't know what he was doing and they died at the end, etc etc there's so many ways to watch this movie because the writing and acting is so good that it works in different ways - which was intentional) The true plot is there, it's just about the characters, their stories (emotional time travel) and their growth > moreso than the literal time travel. Honestly man, it gets better with each watch. I'm glad you two checked it out!

The first time I watched it I was unsure if he ever really time traveled. The second time I think almost 100% did. He went back in time and instead of crashing into Belinda's house, he crashed into her boyfriend and didn't kill her, that's why he was so happy to hear she was alive. The FBI said he also stole from the Colorado laser place, thats where he got the equipment for the first trip.

Maybe he did go back before to save Belinda and changed everything, now he was going to go back to get her to fall in love with him again? But after falling in love with Darius the mission was all about her now

It's definitely possible! I actually had a bit about this in my original cut for this video 😆 i had this whole thing about different scenarios like, what if he went back in time and saved Belinda but killed their potential relationship etc etc. But after reading a couple of interviews with Colin Trevorrow about how it's more about time travel as and emotional thing than movie time travel, i ultimately decided i was going too far down the time travel rabbit hole and i simplified it. But that's just my interpretation of it, what you said could be right too. They definitely made this movie so it could be seen different ways, which is cool.

If Kenneth had traveled before to save Belinda, then the whole storyline wouldn't make any sense from a technical-scientist point of view. However, this is what the movie seems to suggest, and this is why it is absolutely inconsistent and incoherent if seen as a time travel movie. The explanation for this mess is simple, though not many people seem to know the true reason, even when it was the director himself who explained it. The truth is Trevorrow changed the end at the very last minute, the true ending was the time machine didn't work. He said he changed it "because the original ending didn't feel right" to him, but the true reason was that after the change the movie was able to participate in the Sundance Festival as a sci-fi movie (if the machine didn't work, then it would've been deemed just a rom-com movie). Sorry if this disappoints someone, but that's the truth, and you can google it.

I just saw this movie for the first time. The fact that I felt the need to do some damn research afterwards speaks to how impactful a film it is. Cuz that’s not what usually happens after I watch a movie. I love that other people this obsessed with it to. Loved this video. My opinion and hope for these characters is that Kenneth went back before, but sh@t didn’t go exactly as he hoped, so he was trying to back again and find a timeline where he gets Belinda. Like, he was able to save her life the first time but he had to improvise the crash into her house to save her and that saved her life, but he still didn’t get Belinda so now he’s going to get some help and try again. And then he finds a real life/adventure partner in Darius, and realizes the previous trip was actually successful cuz it led to this real connection. And now it’s time to help her fix her stuff. Truly great film. Thanks to all those who also commented. Brilliant video, brother!

I agree! Such a great film! In a time travel movie sense, i feel like he unknowingly went back once and saved Belinda without knowing until it's revealed that she's alive. It's such a great movie in that there's so many different ways to view it and it has such an impact on so many people! I'm so glad you liked it as much as you did!

I was pleasantly surprised by this movie. I picked it randomly one night, and was thoroughly entertained. I like how the movie presents the characters initially and how you see the emotional growth as the movie progresses. I had never heard of this movie until 2021 and even though it came out in 2012, it feels fresh and new.

I think Kenneth did save Belinda (I have only done this once before) but whatever he needed to do to save her changed the past - He ended up sacrificing his original relationship with her in exchange for saving her life. The mission was updated because he knows now that Belinda is safe and he doesn't desire to be with her anymore. Now they go back to save Darius's mother. I think the swerve that Belinda was alive was intended to make Kenneth seem legitimately crazy, but when we get confirmation that he actually built the time machine I knew that he did in fact save Belinda.

@@ShinAkuma204 Trying to analyze this movie as a time travel one is a nonsense and a total waste of time. The true story was that he never builded a real time machine and they never time traveled, he was just nuts. The director changed the finale (thus the story) just for commercial convenience. This change left a complete mess from a real and coherent time travel point of view. The result was just a pink cheesy rom-com story which doesn't even worth taking it seriously as a sci-fi movie. screenrant.com/safety-not-guaranteed-movie-ending-change-colin-trevorrow/

In fact, at that point, the girl could have chosen not to believe him. But she stiil trusted him and ran to the river. After that both of it jump to the time machine and back to past. Watched the movie right now and the ending blew my mind. I didn't expect he could actually time travel and I was hoping for something like "Lars and the real girl" where the protagonist was dealing with some previous trauma. But when they actually time travel in the end, I was blown away. So, he may have actually saved Belinda and maybe changed the timeline. I feel like a 2nd time watching is required once you know he can actually time travel. Thanks for the analysis, it helped me understand the deeper aspects of the movie. Yes! You explained it so well and you put it all together very nicely. It’s exactly what I was thinking but did not know of a good way of wording it. The ending is by far the best part of the whole movie and one of the best endings. This whole movie I can totally relate to and I wish everyday I can go back in a time machine and fix it all. Before watching the movie I would always imagine gosh I have an amazing husband and I love my son, but there are certain past or experiences that get in the way or find a way of creeping in your mind and in order to forget about certain relationships or obstacles I would have wanted to go back fix on myself and maybe not care so much about relationships until I meet my husband who I ended up meeting at work. I always felt a strong connection with my husband now and it’s like met him before. But yeah this is by far my favorite time travel movies and About time is also my favorite.

I agree. I understand it's an indie movie so the marketing and exposure won't be there for it, but it deserves more attention. I guess back in 2012 with Colin Trevorrow not being a household name yet with it being his first film, and it was right before Duplass, Plaza, Johnson and Soni really hit their stride- on top of that, the limited marketing and limited availability in theaters might explain the lack of attention. I think being on netflix will be huge for the movies exposure though. And i agree on the ending! Soooo good!

I think "I've only done this once before" is legit. Belinda died in real life until Kenneth went back and changed the time continuum by crashing his car into her then BF's house, preventing her death. I guess because Kenneth is so weird and was no longer a part of Belinda's life he never pursued knowing if his stunt worked when he got back, assuming it didn't. Probably just being in awe that he did time travel and get back.

Time Travel is possible, except you don't even realize it's happening.

You did well by approaching this movie without entering into details about time travel and sci-fi stuff, because from that point of view it's a total nonsense. It was meant as a pure rom-com movie. Sorry if this disappoints someone, but that's it, and you can google it.

Pretty certain Kenneth was a mentally ill twelve year old in a man’s body who got him and Darius blown up at the end of the movie. I highly doubt the government would keep any components that can be used for time travel easily accessible to some guy in a random lab in the middle of nowhere, no those things are going in an underground bunker filled with a military-load of around-the-clock security. This movie showed a childlike idealism presented through Kenneth, and while there’s nothing innately wrong with that, I think the movie is trying to show that it can be as destructive as the carefree childlike fratboy attitude shown through Jeff. Both are equally destructive, but in one case it was more figurative and the other one was literal. Those government agents were chasing Kenneth for stealing government property, plain and simple, they were not time machine parts. Kenneth represents a different kind of boyish persona from Jeff (Kenneth is the “nice guy” who only ever lands women he is in love with as friends and Jeff is the “a-hole” who truly did love someone but drowns himself in others he does not love since he couldn’t win the heart of the one who got away), but both are equally undesirable forms of people, both are destructive. I hate to piss on people’s bonfire here, but it’s extremely clear through Belinda that Kenneth was mentally unstable, the “time travel” was not meant to be taken literally (not to me anyway). The themes and lessons of the movie do run deeper, but this is one element I believe people seem to be skipping over since they want a happy interpretation of the events, when in fact, it probably is something more twisted and crappy (ie, not good/happy).

i knew this had a great premise for a movie, and i like the meaning in it, but it was shot so horribly. It just felt like a set or green screen, it didn't feel like a real environment. Also some of the cuts were just odd. funny how it was directed by the guy who got fired by disney. I wish they kept him on.

That's interesting, because i really liked some of the shots in the movie: the green of the woods and the beach town, i felt like i was in a beach town. I loved the shot of Darius, Jeff and Arnau when the first get on the beach and they're all lined up and i especially love the shot with Darius on the beach and the sun is shininf right over her- i thought that looked amazing. Which cuts are you referring to? Yeah i wish they kept him on too. An insider stated that they parted ways because of creative differences between Trevorrow and Kathleen Kennedy and that apparently Kennedy was "difficult" and "egotistical".

@@DifferentTake one that stuck with me was the shot of them on a ferris wheel. Just a tiny ferris wheel against a mural. really looks like they are on set in that moment. badly composed too.

@@DifferentTake you imply that he didn't actually travel through time, yet something profound definitely happened in the boat at the end and the boat disappeared with them on it...clearly implying time travel.. so it's also implied that he had gone back in time before and somehow prevented her from dying when the car went through the front window.. seems logical to me. You had made a point that he was feigning that she was alive due to him going back. I take it that it was certainly a foreshadowing of the legitimacy of his ability to go back a second time.. this time for Darius. This movie is on purpose very open to interpretation... as the director has indicated in interviews.

Colin Trevorrow also said that the movie is moreso about time travel in the emotional sense, than traditional literal "movie time travel". But either way, I agree with you. How you explained it, that's how i view the movie half of the time - as a time travel movie. The other half is when i view it as a love story, a lot of symbolism and metaphors for when he's trying to find his partner to go through life with. I think it can be viewed both ways. That's one of the many reasons why the film is so good.
