Pretty certain Kenneth was a mentally ill twelve year old in a man’s body who got him and Darius blown up at the end of the movie. I highly doubt the government would keep any components that can be used for time travel easily accessible to some guy in a random lab in the middle of nowhere, no those things are going in an underground bunker filled with a military-load of around-the-clock security. This movie showed a childlike idealism presented through Kenneth, and while there’s nothing innately wrong with that, I think the movie is trying to show that it can be as destructive as the carefree childlike fratboy attitude shown through Jeff. Both are equally destructive, but in one case it was more figurative and the other one was literal. Those government agents were chasing Kenneth for stealing government property, plain and simple, they were not time machine parts. Kenneth represents a different kind of boyish persona from Jeff (Kenneth is the “nice guy” who only ever lands women he is in love with as friends and Jeff is the “a-hole” who truly did love someone but drowns himself in others he does not love since he couldn’t win the heart of the one who got away), but both are equally undesirable forms of people, both are destructive. I hate to piss on people’s bonfire here, but it’s extremely clear through Belinda that Kenneth was mentally unstable, the “time travel” was not meant to be taken literally (not to me anyway). The themes and lessons of the movie do run deeper, but this is one element I believe people seem to be skipping over since they want a happy interpretation of the events, when in fact, it probably is something more twisted and crappy (ie, not good/happy).

1. James' surname, Lasombra, actually means "the shadow" in Spanish. 2. Pontifex means "bridge maker". 3. One of the folders in Camp Elsewhere is named "Quail/A" (Amanda Quail) which may also pertain to the concept of qualia - a term use to describe the nature or content of our subjective experiences.

"Exorcist is a classic, dont touch it" just comes off like gatekeeping Nothing is ruining horror. The reality is today just like in the past, there's movies we like and dislike. There's no "dip in quality" from a factual standpoint. Furthermore, remakes,etc. dont interfere with the existence of original films, i dont get why people even think this is the case. Blueberry Cheerios doesnt stop fans of the classic or honey nut variations from having their favorite kind nor does it stop new cereal brands from being made. I think a fundamental misunderstanding of how supply and demand works, is at play with this this kind of reasoning. Why do they keep making movies with familiair characters,etc. ? because thats the demand and the business is to supply that demand. It seems some fans think its the other way around and that the studios create the demand. If you operate a business and you cater to the smallest demographic rather than the largest, you;re not gonna be in business for long. Studios aren't into creating stuff nobody wants End of the day, people want to see new and old things. This notion that old IPs are taking away from new ones is nonsensical. its not like Blumhouse and Miramax share budgets,etc. Halloween part 25 will have a place right next to whatever new horror comes out by then. Bonus Footage: The events of Halloween Ends, dont work as a middle chapter because its contingent on everything that happens in kills, not just 2018.

One thing I couldn't figure out was that Amanda started the Empty Man blowing ritual on the bridge with all her friends and each one died, but why is Amanda spared after blowing into the bottle then and also in the room with the other worshipers in the building. Is Amanda special in some way?!? Things also don't make sense in that the protagonist was able to find the camp in the forest with no proper map or guide - was it because he knew it there in some kind of manifested way?

She's one of the chosen cult members who will carry out cult duties so was spared. James was the chosen one so he was planned from the outset to discover all those files and he heard noise outside so followed the sound to the cult gathering.

There is very much more to extract from this film; one important thing to realize is that _everyone is in on it!_ Anyone who isn't has no idea who James is.This is made evident throughout the film, that everyone who interacts with him is part of the experiment. Amanda pretends as much as Nora is pretending that James is a real person. As they are Mother and daughter, both are involved and Pontifex society members...just as Garrett and the Detective informed him that the society was 'next level' dangerous in its scope and that noone would ever solve the 'crimes' happening in that small town. Also note that like some religions that never directly reference the 'name' of God (Adonai beings a substitute for IHVH, Muhammad have no known identity but a history all the same, i.e. is 'unnamable' (Lovecraft) Paul (the last 'prophet' before the next) has no name and so is only referred to as a 'carrier'later, the the 'Empty Man' as the vehicle or Earthly substitute (tupla, avatar) for the real thing. Paul being a purely human host can't physically contain it indefinitely, while a tulpa can as long as the focus on his manifestation is maintained, and even if not could just as easily be replaced by another if needed (this is the most frightening aspect of the films premise).

Yeah so Amanda and Nora created James to be the vessel and gave him all the backstory. So yeah the cult members all know. But seems silly to give him so much backstory when they plan to make him a mindless vessel. So the twist ending makes no sense.
@5wm562
@5wm562 7 ай бұрын
@@jonfreeman9682 You gotta be kidding me. This is just too damned convenient. But whether or not you're the same person I had a back and forth with hours ago; the point of the backstory (smh that you don't get this) is what's needed to give the 'empty man' substance in the first place. He's 'empty' only in the sense of needing to be filled with that substance so that the Archon has something to possess and occupy (duh).
@jonfreeman9682
@jonfreeman9682 7 ай бұрын
@@5wm562 Okay I find it helps not to overthink supernatural horror movies as the logic is hard to follow. So the cult creates a human which is empty by default so they add backstory to him and let him roam around investigating stuff to learn his life was fabricated and now it's time for the entity to possess him. That's a rather complicated way to find a vessel when the entity could just possess any human like Paul in the first place. Still it's a nice twist and good to see the evil entity gets the upper hand in the end.
@5wm562

@@jonfreeman9682 And therein lies the rub. Paul, had previously attempted suicide, again why suicide is an important anchor in the film, the same with the early versions of the tulpa that tore themselves apart. Sufficient concentration and focus is required to prevent that, again why the 'empty' man is just a shell for the Archon to occupy. Paul was a rare instance, so is assumed that none of the cult members were fit for the role, lest they too would destroy themselves, as apparently anyone who calls up the 'empty man' did.Moreover as Amanda explains, the accommodation isn't permanent, whereas James' occupation, as long as the cult maintained focus, could last indefinitely.
@5wm562

The concept of the film is influenced or in some way derived from the writings of Pierre Teilhard de Chardin who coined the term 'Noosphere' which is mentioned as the source of the Empty Man's essence 1. That James is the Empty Man, besides being a vessel for whatever is in the Noosphere, suggests from the start he, as was Paul himself is responsible for or influencing the suicides and thus only discovering (as does Harry Angel in Angel Heart) his own handiwork, or rather subjecting himself to fear trauma, a state that has to be maintained in order for the nothingness of the Noosphere to creep in. 2. The idea of repetition is consistent with the visual hints of Eastern Philosophical influences over the course of at least 500 years, everything from Vedic, to Buddhism to Islam, even Martial Arts (Tai Chi, Yoga) where the focus on Mantras and the repetition of words, movements or vocalization of sounds to induce altered states of mind or empty the mind of intrusive thoughts to achieve a 'flow state' of awareness that is carried by some perpetual media; OM for example. 3. The bridge motif suggests the idea of 'crossing the abyss' , i.e. (Psalm 23) or bridging the infinite gap between any polarity (0 and 1 for example relative to the innumerable permutations computer systems use to communicate ideas, synonymous with divination and therefore 'prophecy', seeing or soothsaying 4. The multi-limbed humanoid fossil in the cave could be any number of things; A:The remains of a human mutation with many limbs that served as the actual 'thing' from which Vedec dieties such as Indra, Shiva and Kali were worshiped and still in India today such persons are regarded as avatars thereof B: Some type of inorganic humanoid being that emerged from the Noosphere, or the Astral Plane, captured or buried or died there, as anomalous artifacts with odd properties are buried in ancient tombs C: This however not being the true form of that entity and otherwise an appropriate vehicle for the entity to possess, that being the tentacled shape shifting i.e. formless thing that possessed Paul and crawled into James' body. Take whatever Lovecraftian thing you'd like: Shub-Niggurath, Azathoth (blind idiot god of chaos), Nyarlhotep...the crawling chaos, the Thing on the Doorstep (Teddy Bear), The Whisperer in the Darkness etc. 5. The Tulpa or empty man is 'just' flesh and an automaton in spite of it seeming to have real self awareness, is no less a Golem, an experiment ( Frankenstein's Monster) incapable of distinguishing its reality from its own awareness of reality. The early attempts at creating the Tulpa were temporary and either dissolved or were burned, one we see mindlessly uses its own viscera to paint an image that communicates a future event (NOTE: The Golem or Tulpa is aware of itself but not its false reality and control of it can be lost- it can become violent and destructive tear itself apart, or do harm to others, hence the Wiki article about the Pontifex members found dead in the cabin. The artle never states how they died, since the thought form left no evidence). This is why James' nose bleeds and he coughs up blood, as a result of breaks in the equation Thought +Concentration+Time = Flesh.

I'm late to the party on this masterpiece, and I could honestly write a goddamn thesis on it! So, I'll just try and sum it up because the ending tells you all you need to know ( in my opinion), and then the great fun is seeing how the movie is telling you what's really going on as it shifts from one horror sub genre to another. The Empty Man isn't the entity in the cave at the start. There is a supernatural creature, and it needs a vessel to work it's dark magic in our world....an EMPTY vessel!!! Paul becomes that vessel at the beginning, and thus becomes the empty man. But Paul is merely human, and being the vessel has drained him, so the cult have of course created James so that he can be the new empty man, or vessel for the dark entity. The question is, who is the entity? This is where you need to know your Lovecraft. The entity is Nyarlathotep, who is an elder god looking to bring about the end of humanity by using/manipulating others. He can take on many forms, and we see two of them in the movie. His most common form is a humanoid creature with a giant tentacle for a head. We see this just before he enters James at the end. He's also referred to as the Crawling Chaos, and at one point the cult do mention that title. There is another scene where if you listen carefully one of the cult members actually whispers "Nyarlathotep".

Took me a long time to finally get around to watching The Empty Man. I'm glad I did. Very creepy, and especially excellent for the first film by the director! I really appreciate your take on the film. I feel like there's a lot of gaslighting of James going on by Pontifex. If he's only "3 days old" and his history is a lie, why bother showing the events of his wife/son's death? Technically that never happened. How had the cop ever heard of him before? I'm just not buying that it was all manifested and fictitious. I think he was broken down mentally in order for him to become a vessel. What's truly a mystery to me, is that skeleton. Look how large that skull is, the number of arms, the amount of fingers. It doesn't seem human. So what is it, where is it from? How was it the previous vessel 500 years ago? Very thought provoking film, and I enjoyed the video.
