I totally agree. I own both of these plugs. If I am doing hard or above, I always use the Kramer tape on the master bus. I do this because it makes the left and right guitars on a LCR rock mix get "that sound" as well as it helps the mid section get punchy and mix well with the left and right. The big trick for me is to set the input to -15 and the out to +15. It works way better on the master bus with a super low input.

I find the Kramer to be more interesting on my mix buss. I hear it add dimension. It seems to take what was coming at my ears as wide and flat, and it adds depth to the bottom and creates some sense of perceived motion that’s apparent when you disengage the plug-in after listening to the mix with it on for a while. You hear that something ‘good’ has gone away. I know it’s impossible to explain these things well, but I try. I don’t get the aforementioned effect with the J37. When I put it on, My ears are saying “so…where is it?” I don’t know if it’s just me, but I will continue to play with the J37 to see if I unlock something magical there. Everyone online is all about the J37, so either I’m missing something or the Kramer is just more for me.

I think you nailed their strengths really well. The J37 is a work horse for me. I'll reach for it often to flavour an instrument if it sounds a little sterile or needs some movement by applying some subtle delay. Both do a really nice slap and are great to have on an aux. Agreed, get both if you can but the J37 will give you more of a tool kit.

Neither one of them is the "best". I use both. They both do different things and sound differently on instruments, tracks and/or master. If you can get them on sale, pick up both. I just picked up Softube's Tape machine, and it also sounds different than J37&Kramer, but puts a nice presence on the Master or instrument track. BUY THEM ALL! and experiment what works for your track or song. Great video, thanks for taking time to do this comparison.

IMHO - I tried out demos of both but went ahead and bought the Kramer - I love the controllable depth and warmth it offers for thump on the bottom end (specifically what it can do to the kick, subs and bassline) and couldn't match that effect with the J37. Also, it seemed like J37 was more CPU intensive and all its extra bells and whistles were gimmicks I wouldn't use much... I use the Kramer on every track!

If you make changes in the settings and on/off the plug in when the audio track totally changes in the arrangement it makes it very hard to properly discern the effects of the unit. You should just loop the same section to make the differences more distinctive please and thank you.

I have both, and I must say I like the Kramer better. I never got really good results with the J37, namely the sound on Beatles records (I know, many variables more), but I mean like the McCartney I album, which was recorded to the J37. I don't seem to get that kind of gritty acoustic guitar. With the Kramer though I get great fat sounds by using flux. It's less subtle, and not just saturates, but fattens as well, whereas the J37 just distorts. For delay effects, I like the J37 better. Actually, I get a pretty convincing ADT by sending a dry signal to an aux and delaying 40 ms with slight saturation. But if I want beefy kick drums, fat basses or add weight to snares, the Kramer is what I use.
@sageaudio Жыл бұрын
For sure - I think J37 has something cool to it, but the Kramer is a little more useful (at least for me) but that seems to be the same for other people that've tried both. I'll try the J37 for some tape delay though, since I usually just use the kramer for same tape delay at 160ms.

Yeah....im pretty much convinced Hardware sound can be imitated...about 90% if your mix is full, eqed, each track compressed as a mix before you master....then its easier to imitate hardware on your master bus.....making the High Price of these Hardware Units...sort of out dated and not worth it.... in about 5 years.....they are going to have to cut the cost of the Hardware by at least 60% if they want new young artist or even older once like me....that have taken the Digital sound mixed with Analog on the Computer up to a radio...."I dont need the hardware....level...and I have a rack.... Example Karacter by PA on the Beginning of your Master bus.....AVOX Warm on the End of it right before limiter....your master will sound like it got ran through a $8000 Reel to Reel
