I love your videos. I was actually starting to watch them from the beginning and I didn't realize how much more comfortable you are on film now! Glad the sink was more cooperative this time! Keep up the good work!

You have such great craftsmanship, you make everything you do look so easy. Great reminder to ALWAYS check for gas leaks.

I think all the leak tester does is show if the shut off valve on the tank shuts off completely, not fittings leaking externally. You demonstrated perfectly the use and limitations of the "thingamabob". Soap testing all fittings externally is best practice. I believe a pressure gage that can show loss of pressure in the closed system with the tank shut off is recommended. Mike

you could add a pressure gauge to the system. That way when it's turned off, if there is a drop in pressure you'll see it. This is great for checking for those tiny leaks. Turn it off, writing down the pressure shown. Then after a few hours, check it again to see if it lost any pressure.

An LPG detector/alarm mounted low in the boat might be prudent. While you're at it, explore CO detector/alarm too if you are sleeping with a combustion device running below (diesel heater.) I almost lost a pair of friends to carbon monoxide poisoning. If we hadn't noticed they were running late that morning and gone to check on them, they'd be gone.

Fine job. Compression fittings can be a bit tricky sometime. Should check for leaks periodically with the bubbles.
@captlarry-35256 жыл бұрын
I had a leaking sheathed stove hose.. which I checked with soapy water.No bubbles.. the sheath apparently diffused the leak. Blew up in my face anyway.. just to teach me that No Single Test is enough ! You need a pressure guage, And soapy water, and I think his bubbling detector is good too.. although obviously it only detects leaks down stream of the device !As was clearly shown here !

Hi Mads, thx for the awesome videos! Two tips for pipework: Make a template from thin wire and then do the actual bending in a convenient place using existing stuff for the bends (Beer Bottles, ...). And/or buy a cheapo pipebender, these suffice for copper. And if you want to appreciate copper more try steel brake lines or injection lines :-) Cheers, Andi

You can also use a dish soap+water solution to check for leaks. Put 1/3 soap & 2/3 water in a small bowl & soak a sponge in it. Turn on the gas & then run the sponge on the gas lines. Any bubbling you see indicates a leak. Also, make sure windows are open if you're cooking inside to prevent CO poisoning. You can use a bathroom scale with digital readouts to estimate how much gas is left in the tank. Weigh the tank, and minus the empty tare weight (its printed on the gas tank) from the reading that you get.

Howdy Mads, Most folks that have LP gas on boats use aluminium tanks. Just something for you to consider . BTW I really have enjoyed viewing your projects. I like the way you are detail oriented. Many Regards Joe

There were bubbles, you can hear them in the footage. The thing is, it's too small to register visibly. I advise caution with these systems. Manual checking is always better, and if you can get your hands on a sensor that sniffs leaks in the air, that's even better. eBay and Amazon have them in droves and the prices aren't very high on them.

Never saw that bubbler thing before. Interesting. Not sure if it's that useful. Two more fittings and a valve to leak. ALWAYS soap your connections. I'd just manually shut off the gas at the tank anyway. More valves and connections means more possible leaks. Fantastic job as usual.

British Waterways specified a type of hose to be used with Calor gas (butane) that you must use to get certification. The problem is that no one in the entire world makes hose of the type specified.

The low temp charactoristics of Butane and Propane are well known and published widely . Below a point in the 30 degree F range.. Butane simply will not gasify, and your stove will be useless, while propane will work in Arctic Conditions. The regulator pressure for the two gasses is somewhat different 11" water column for Butane and 14" for Propane..although in EU countries they have recently chosen an intermediate setting so the fuels can be used interchangeably, with some small adjustment of the air setting on your burners. Tank fitttings and valves are different between the two gasses, but with the kind of snap on regulator you have.. and 3 gas choices Propane, Butane, and Campoing Gaz. .. it gets beyond me here in north America.. but a site like Calor has all the info on all the systems, hardware and gases. In a cold climate, butane is silly, but does have more BTU's per pound/gallon than propane.

the leak detector will only show leaks down stream from the detector.. not between the tank and the detector.

That looks like a high quality kit... Is it European only? Btw, you might want to check out Swagelock fittings for future gas or water projects. It uses a double ferrule behind the nut rather than a single ferrule

Wow that thingamabob is weird ! I've never seen one over here. don't you hate that when you get a project all done and every thing back where it goes and the next project you have to take it out again..

For extra safety use some Teflon tape around the threads of your tank and hose connections they go inside the screw threadings.

I know someone already said but it would be wise to add a propane sniffer, and co2/ monoxide detector. all mounted low in the boat. may save your life one day.
@captlarry-35256 жыл бұрын
the thing about detectors is where to mount them ?I have one that will use dual detector elements.. and that is a good thing.Closed and inaccessible spaces ( cabinets and bilges) are often separated from each other..but either can fill with gas.

I have a european sailboat with that exact valve, where can I buy the blue propane tank here in the USA? Thanks like your chanel!
@marzsit98333 жыл бұрын
the blue tank is not propane, it's butane and is a campingaz 907 exchange tank, not available in the us and also not refillable or exchangeable in the us.
@RainerEl9 жыл бұрын
you should never ever use liquified gas in aboat. it is easy to use it to warming or for cooking, easier than alcohol burner but it is so much more dangerous. Your boat is like container where there is air with oxygen and if the container even in a small part of it is filled with gas it will choke you or it will burst in to flames or explode wildly and distroy your boat and burn you. Gas is easily leaked, you must comtinously worrie if you hoses are in perfect condition. Liquified gas is very harsh to all kinds of hoses, it will wear them and you should change the hoses in every year. Just change to alcohol burner, it is a little bit more diificult to start it to burn, but it is so, so much more safer.

Just a question....Do you secure the gas tank in the box???

I'll just go ahead a light it and check for leaks later" Famous Last Words # 3. I posted a video taken right after I burned the hair off my head.. doing this.. and I HAD checked for leaks with soapy water. Do NOT SKIP ANY STEPS ! Do NOT ASSUME ANYTHING ! and above all, beware the rubber hose connected to the cooker ! See Fisher 30 Pacific Child #5 Exploding Stove Test.. and subsequent posts about propane systems.

odd kit, compression fittings are NOT allowed with propane systems, same with the manual valve, they are not allowed! and your regulator is missing the required gauge.
@marzsit98333 жыл бұрын
standards in europe are different than the standards in the us. gauges are not required with campingaz, compression fittings are standard and the system is butane, not propane.

@captlarry-35256 жыл бұрын
I don't want to give a thumbs down, because there is so much good information here, and you are really trying to do it right ( so am I right now) but as my comment below shows.. there is a serious lack of respect / understanding about propane/butane leaks, and how the stuff behaves. It is heavier than air..and can fill the boat to your waiste.. enough to blow you and your boat to hell.. and you will NOT smell a thing standing up. Any little space like a cabinet.. is a potential bomb filled with propane and air in the right mixture. Many boat makers are quite generous in making just such a space right behind or next to your cooker.
