@@sinuosalice-1434 That's a pretty common way to come through with just the main up. It's not over powered with too much sail , it helps stabilize the boat and gives him power if the kicker craps out for some reason. Looks like he has a reef in it as well.

Way too much speed for mainsail alone. Especially trimmed poorly. That was the outboard.

I’m a sailer myself and he definitely had that little outboard at probably full throttle. Most trailer yachts will max out about 6kn under outboard because they can’t exceed hull speed under outboard. He did well though, a win for the sailboat!

Sailboat should stay on windward side of channel with main up so if engine fails you have half a chance to pop the jib up and sail your way out of trouble. Main sail up, jib ready, steady on, style point loss for dragging a fender, but win for boat and captain.

The yacht (sailing boat) clearly won. Most yachts have easily driven hulls designed for going through, rather than planing over, a chop. As a lifelong sailer and powerboater I never cease to be amazed how many of the so-called 'captains' driving powerboats in the USA are unaware of the capacity of the mincing machines on the stern of their boats to dismember a human body. There are three 'rules' of the sea for those powerboaters who don't want to end up winning a Darwin Award: never have the engine on when there is someone in the water, the helmsman must always wear the kill cord and the helmsman, children and any one else who so wishes should always wear a lifejacket, especially in choppy water.

So true, I hate it when people do stupid stuff like sit on the bow when they’re up on plane or something stupid like that, whenever I’m in charge of a vessel under 20 feet I always make everyone, including adults, wear life jackets even though it’s not that rough on the lake, there’s so much stupid stuff that could happen, and my boat is a 1974 bayliner mosquito that doesn’t have a kill cord yet so me and my dad are putting one in, and, my dad taught me almost everything I know about boating safety and I even got my boaters license last year when I turned 12

Once we were out in our cabin cruiser and my dad was driving watching like a hawk and the water was pretty clear when all of a sudden the whole boat started shaking and you could hear the props hitting something and we look behind us and see a huge log come out from behind us we were so lucky it went right between the 2 props and you couldn’t even see the log from a few feet away it was so submerged. Now I have a fear of logs and am always nervous to go up on plane

Well done for the sail boat! I'm partial to sailboats, but this guy just handled it ... with a small outboard as well! At (1:21), going out to sea in a deck boat, kid in the bow with no PFD and worst of all ... A CRUDDY DIRTY HULL. Arrest that man! I don't think he'd have enough power to get back in on an outgoing tide with the that small outboard though.

You would be surprised how well those little sail boats do in fast flowing water because they're displacement hulls and are easily driven because of it also extremely light because little fuel and tiny engine but they just seem to go no matter what in a lot of circumstances

And, anyone wondering why his sail is up, but luffing, it's so he can do a 180 and sail back in if his motor quits. You never go through an inlet in a sailboat without at least the mainsail up if know what you are doing for that reason.

@@ralphholiman7401 that would be impossible to avoid if headed to the irons. He had his main sheet out to port and it was luffing. Maybe that was intentional so the wind wouldn’t drift him towards the rocks on the other side...?

That sailboat done well for a small one. He had the main sail up while passing through which gave it the stability it needed. Plus, remember sailboats also have a keel. So when they're underway with sails up they're very stable even in rough waves.

The sailboat definitely was a win for the boats. Only modern racing sailboats can go up on plane, all others simply plow through the water and in heavy waves you expect water over the bow. As others commented, his bow really didn't go under much if at all, so the only reason to give him a loss is if he had a cabin hatch open, which we did not see from the camera angle. Definitely a win!

That sailboat did well. The guy did well to have his main up loosely trimmed, putting the rig under a bit of tension. I had a Precision for a while, it is not a particularly heavily build sailboat like a Island Packet or Catalina. I have wondered why you don't film sailboats and figured it was because they were not dramatic making the crossing. Most moderately sized cruising sailboats have several tons of lead in the keel helping them stay steady.

I have a 17 foot daysailer and I’d feel comfortable taking it through hallover cause of the way the hull is Shaped. Many small and medium sailboats have hulls that just destroy big waves at lower speeds because that’s what they’re made to do. I’d give this round a win to the boats

Sailboat did well. Looks like they were motorsailing. Main wasn’t full. I have a sailboat of similar size, and that is how I would have done it.(use motor for most of the power). Putting main up gives some additional lateral stability. You don’t put up the jib as it will just flog. The advantage a sailboat has in these conditions is a heavy keel for additional stability. Also, water over the bow really isn’t a big deal. They are designed for that. Commonly referred to as “washing the deck.” Of course all boats have their place, but sailboats, even small, can handle a lot rougher conditions.

The skipper of that little Precision sailboat handled it like a pro even if they didn't get all of the fenders stowed away before coming under the bridge. He definitely has balls of bronze since that looks like it's the Precision 165. The 185 could have done it too since that mast height is only 27 feet (the 165 is just over 25 feet in height).
