These days, watching SV Delos videos every Friday is like opening up my new National Geographic magazine every month when I was a kid. 50 years later, instead of Jacque Cousteau and Robin Lee Graham, it's Brian & the crew of Delos showing me the world, above and below the oceans. Good job Delos.

Sailing SV Delos also the insatiable appetite for teak in the marine industry for use on decks and interior furniture is a problem. Synthetic teak decks and interior alpi-teak furniture is becoming more and more common place which is a good thing but there is a ridiculous snobbery from the consumer base claiming the boats feel cheap. It grinds my gears! Merry Christmas to you all.

This episode is reminding me a a good friend that built a steel sailboat in his back yard. When it came time to stock the vessel with provisions for ocean going I discovered half his state room was a machine shop. Extra anything and everything that had to do with engines, motors, Charging systems, electrical systems, and enough stock to build most anything Plus a small lathe. On one of the walls in the engine room was a long block engine in a crate just in case the engine failed... HE, being a machinist and designer made every inch functional. Before leaving for a Pacific Crossing he was injured in his limited hydroplane when it flipped during his last race. He never fully recovered and never sailed again... BUT we learned from his adventures those extra parts saved him on more than one occasion.

Really appreciate your concern for the environment. Very difficult choices. It is easy to say just save the rain forest where we live in the US, but not so easy if your life depends on doing things that destroy the rain forest. The only way that appears to be able to save it is if tourism becomes more profitable than the other uses of the land. You are helping with the first step which is publicizing the problem. Thanks!

PS... Great to see the Mizzen Staysail in this episode. It and the Ballooner were absolutely our favourite sails. It's always a great day when one of those comes out of the locker! If you're looking for ideas for a new episode, consider dedicating one to those two sails and the pole system on the SM. Over the past three years I've spent more time describing how they work to more cruisers than I can count. Even in the SM community there seems to be quite a few who are uncomfortable with the Ballooner in particular. Strange since I loved that sail and found it could actually set and douse it singlehanded (same for the Mizzen Staysail).

Great episode guys! We just closed on the sale of our Super Maramu earlier this week after 3 years of full-time cruising on her in the Caribbean and South Pacific with our two teenage kids. It's going to be a tough adjustment leaving the 'real world' for life ashore for a few years while we get the kids settled and on their own. Until we go out again, we'll have to go back to watching you guys live the dream (while doing boat maintenance in exotic locations)! Great job again.

Hi Guys, I had exactly the same problem on my boat with the spring failing on the seal, nearly caused a disaster with sea water leaking into the sump. The problem is that the genuine seals (in my case Jabsco or Johnson) use stainless springs, but pattern parts use ordinary steel, OK for most oil seals that are bathed in oil but not for a raw sea water pump so be warned your seals will be fine for a short while but keep an eye on them as they will probably fail sooner rather than later. It is possible to get pattern seals with stainless springs in the UK. Love watching your vids, keep up the good work. Fair Winds.

Another first class video, well done!! I wouldn't worry about the bearings you got, there is minimum side load on your water pump. Except for very rare instances, never buy bearings or seals from the maker of the equipment. I can imagine spotting lemurs in the wild by the locals is like a diver spotting abalone. Until you've spotted a few on your own they're invisible. Merry Christmas Delos Crew!!!!
