Oh My Nauticals, what excellent choice of music for the passage into the atoll and for the sharks, really amps up the suspense. "Will they make into the paradise lagoon of Raroia or will this be the last sail? Stay tuned to find out"

Hi I'm a kiwi in Auckland NZ, approaching 70 and considering purchasing a liveaboard yacht and to explore our amazing coast line. What a blessing to find your series. I just love the honesty and respect you have for each other and our amazing planet. This episode is cleverly done with the building drama! Was that acting, or real fear??? Unlike you I'll be a virgin sailor with much to learn, what a gift to have sailed since young. Thanks so much for generously sharing this wonderful chapter of your charming lives. Cheers

Hi Ron, That was our real reactions at the time with a little bit of dramatic music added in for fun. We actually were very worried about the reef pass as we had heard scary tales about them, once we were in we wondered what all the fuss was about and were much more relaxed about the next ones even though they were tougher. As for the sharks, being from safe England we had never seen a shark in the flesh before so we were pretty terrified, we made a new world record for how quickly we could get back into the dinghy at one point! However we now enjoy swimming with the black tip reef sharks. It is funny for us to watch back our reactions at the time and compare to how relaxed we now are in the same situation. Good luck with your adventures, we would like to come back and cruise New Zealand again one day, there is so much to see that we didn't have time for when we were there. Cheers Matt and Amy

Great vid. I am hoping to do a similar voyage in a few years so I love seeing what you are up to. The South Pacific is a true jewel and thanks for showing some ‘out of the way’ places. Amazing to see the plaque and reef where Kontiki landed. I loved the Jaws music and didn’t realise that you have a phobia.......that won’t attack.....generally. Certainly not the black tipped reef sharks. Happy Birthday & Anniversary. I look forward to the next exciting, action packed vid. Cheers.

A second comment, if I may. I love how you two seem to take everything in your stride - occasionally one will manage to tease a comment out of the other like ‘a bit nervous’. It’s very funny but a totally admirable trait, and don’t be afraid to talk more on the videos, it’s nice to know what you think. I also have a copy of Kon Tiki on my bookshelves and it also inspired me to get into boating and sailing - so nice to know that there is a commemorative plaque on the island. I have yet to get to the South Pacific, I envy you that experience. Stay safe.

RICH THOMAS Thanks for your kind words. It has been hard getting used to talking to the camera but we are getting more used to it now so hopefully future videos will be better! We hope you make it to the South Pacific, it's such a beautiful place.

It must have been magnificent sailing with the big Oyster on the way to the atoll and also a bit envious as she would have handled those seas easily compared to Florence. I'm guessing you got your own back entering the atoll as I doubt they risked their multi million boat with its extra draft following you in. Loved your shot of the film star hermit crab checking out his reflection in the camera lens.

They talk about their dinghy in previous episodes. It is a 9foot Spindrift nesting dinghy. Go to the website B and B Yacht Design in North Carolina. The Spindrift comes in (9, 10, 11 and 12 foot versions, but the 12 is not nesting. all come as non nest as well. I am thinking of building one myself. I have a Cape Dory 33, it looks like a good tender for a smaller boat.

Hi guys. Great video. Happy new year, birthday and anniversary! Best wishes to you. Do you have a sonar installed on your yacht.... I’m guessing it would be helpful for the atolls?
@SailingYachtFlorence6 жыл бұрын
Hi Rob, No sonar just a standard depth sounder, but if you stand on the bow (or higher) with a pair of polarised sunglasses on and only move when the sun is overhead (10am to 4pm) then you can see the reefs clearly. The old fashioned way but it works. Happy new year to you too.

Do you really have a fear of sharks or you just playing it up? Honestly, relax. However, make way for Hammerheads and Bulls. On a different note, if you're gonna pick up shells with live critters, make sure you know what you're picking up. Some have nasty stings, others are quite serious where you require immediate medical attention. Get a pocket guide with color pictures and text descriptions of the various shells.
@SailingYachtFlorence6 жыл бұрын
Hi Richard We were a little nervous of the sharks as we had never seen them outside of an aquarium before, let alone swam with them. We had read that the black tips were not dangerous but something in the back of our brains wasn't so sure! We were actually genuinely scared, of course adding in the Jaws theme tune was just a little fun for the video but the footage of our reactions is genuine. It is interesting for us to compare our first experience of sharks in this video with how we react to a few more of them in the next one. Thanks for the advice on the shells, we do have the guides and know to keep clear of cone shells etc, its quite scary reading what some of them can do to you. cheers M&A
