Ahm a few passages that I can recall which have been the toughest to date. The 1st was when we were sailing down from Eddystone point to Triabunna, we had already been experiencing 30-40 kts on a close haul, and as we came past the bottom of Schoeten Island into Mercury passage we were hit by a 65 Kt squall. That was probably the very worst I have experienced. The second one was when sailing across Bass st late one afternoon, in 40 kts and the autopilot cable mechanism broke and the skipper and myself needed to repair it, while the other crew member was able to hand steer (52 ft ketch). Being in the stern and working upside down etc to make the repairs was an unpleasant experience 🤢🤮). The 3rd tough trip was when crossing the Tasman from Nelson to Newcastle and we experienced 40kt plus winds and choppy seas for about 2 days mid passage. That was tiring but at least we were able to heave to for some hrs to have a rest before getting going again. That’s sailing offshore for you 😂

Thanks for sharing your crossing Adam, I would not have liked to be hand steering.

Thank you and my pleasure sharing the experience. The hand steering was much more enjoyable once we got past the Bass leg 😅

Thanks for sharing, that was quite the adventure with some serious sailing conditions in the Bass Strait. My toughest sail to date has been in the Santa Barbara channel (between the Channel Islands and the coast of Ventura in Southern California - solo, 15-20 knots with 12-15 foot waves. The worst part was trying to get back into the harbor inside the surf break.

Thanks for commenting. I looked up the Santa Barbara channel and with what you say I can imagine it could get a bit spicy there! Thank you for watching and happy sailing 😄

Hi, thanks for sharing this awesome experience. I'm a new solo sailor living aboard a small keeler in the Mahurangi Harbour. I sailed with my parents in a Kestrel when I was a kid so had some memories to draw on. So far I've only ventured as far as Kawau Island but had a blast learning how to handle the boat on my own. I'm taking time now to fix this boat up and looking forward to great cruising adventures in the future. I'd love to do the NZ to Fiji passage and carry on to wherever the wind takes me. Your video is pretty inspiring, cheers.👍😁
