Күн бұрын

On this episode of Sailing Vessel Triteia I am tackling the old Yanmar 2gm20 diesel engine. The piston is seized in the sleeve/head so she has to come out. This episode is longer than most of my videos because there is a lot of footage and I myself like watching the process of such things so I included a lot of footage showing me figuring things out and doing boat yoga inside tight lazarettes to unhook the engine.
I hope you enjoy this episode and if you do please give it a “thumbs up”!
Fair Winds,

Your hard work in tight spaces, not being afraid to get filthy and oily, innovation in solving aproblems, your old yellow pickup (I had one too) and a pretty girl helping you out all remind me of myself when I was your age. Can't say I was fond of it at the time but looking back on it I would say it was some of the best times in my life .... enjoy the memories you are making now and keep doing just what you are doing .... you are doing it right :-)

Thanks Orville, I was raised by a good (and very stern) mama that made sure we were experience in hard work and persistence. I am very grateful for my life and the moment even as I drive to the boat every night after working a full day I smile a the off ramp. Thanks for watching and commenting and your support!

No problem with keeping watching, you are bringing back some great memories for me. I good to see that not all people who own a yacht have everything done for them, real sailors know their boats intimately inside and out and can fix or jury rig almost anything, after all, where are you going to find a repair shop when you are miles and miles out to sea ha ha ah

James, another sailor James here and also the owner of Alberg 30 #56, Mo Cuisle on the Chesapeake. Thanks for posting the videos. I, too, found a great deal on my boat in July 2017, she’s in great shape but powered with a Tohatsu 9.8HP with the old engine compartment used for the battery bank. These are fine, fine boats and will reward TLC. It’s cool to see my boat’s immediate sister from the builder’s line on video. Regards, James C. S/V Mocuisle 1965 Alberg 30 #56

DUDE!!!! I CANT BELIEVE YOU HAVE #56!!! Oh rad is that??????? so great, are you on instagram? I would love to see photos of your boat. I spent much of the day today in my aft lazarette installing my ais/gps antenna, and remembering my days working on the engine. The engine bay seems like a great place for your batteries! Thanks for the message, hit me up so I can see photos of your boat... jamesthesailorman@gmail.com

Great example for the late new generation of sailors whom usually like every thing ready to go. Bro, you're something else with a lot of mind power and faith to get what you aim for. As I always say:'', we, the old boat lovers are kind of extincting persons''..Now a days, ..Regular people do not understand. Keep it ON James.!!!! God Bless you where ever you are.

Well done on a real killer of a job. Those of us that have done that before were sitting cheering you on, man. Loads of oil leaked out of mine too, plus I had to separate the gearbox off the back of the engine in mid air because the whole unit wouldn't go through the companionway in one go. Not so easy on a rusted up 75hp Ford. What a beautiful woman to stick with you the whole way through and give a hand to put it on the truck. Here in the UK it's all nail varnish & where's the Merc. Long day, bet you were glad when that one ended. Really like your videos.

Just being a guy black clouds like to follow, if I had to wait a few months before haul out with a bad seacock, I'd jam a plug into the thru hull just so I could sleep at night. I think you're right not to mess with the seacock until haul out, but I'd plug that thruhull anyway. Word of caution - It can be very very expensive to get a sunk boat off the bottom. Nice work on the motor haul. You are definitely on your way.

For my day job I am an Arthandler (for the last 12+ years). I work at the highest level in the art world, working for museums, large galleries, celebrity clients, massive private collections and the like. Basically if someone has something that is extremely heavy and fragile and worth millions of dollars they call me to come install it or deinstall it and transport it. But in regards to tools, I grew up on farms and have been building stuff since I was very young. I agree with you about the maintenance! It feels sooo good to complete a project, it might be the most relaxing thing I do in my life haha

The hole the oil was coming out of was the dipstick hole with no dipstick in it. Make a note because it's hard to reach back there and locate it come oil change time :-) Anyway, congrats and keep up the hard work. My manual bilge pump is mounted in the cockpit within reach of the tiller and main sheet. Looks like the same model (Gusher 10). Mounted in the aft section of the port cockpit locker with the handle socket flush with the seating surface. Would be an easy job with the engine out. Would also give you more valuable under galley storage.

Cool, yeah I was looking for a better place to mount it as every boat I have sailed on has it in the cockpit, seemed like a strange place to have it in the cabin, if you are alone you can't see whats happening up top, thanks for the advice!

If you have to do anything like that again you might look at the bolts fore and aft and consider your balance points. I'd look for bolts that attach something to the ends of the block. I would not go smaller than 3/8 diameter bolts on an engine like the one your pulling. Pull the bolts out that appear to be in the right place and replace them with eye bolts. Attach a clevis to each eye bolt. Use a short chain with grab hooks to connect the clevises. Use grab hooks so you can shorten or lengthen the chain for better balance. Before I started to lift I would run a bolt through the chain to create a loop. That prevents the engine from shifting unexpectedly. It also adds an extra way to balance the lift. If you had to you could lift the engine vertically instead of horizontally I've lifted and moved both machines and a few boat engines. The last boat engine we had to pull when I was in the Navy was a Gray Marine 671 slant, out of a 40 foot Navy liberty boat. I don't remember, but I think they go some were between 1,500 and 2,000 lbs. The equipment we used as a bit over kill--a 15 ton crane! Good job!

It's good to see you are not alone, you started a fairly extensive project and it is nice to have help and support from our better half. I did this same project and I can relate to yours. Take the time to do it right, having engine power is very important. As I often tell my boating friends, "in order to sail down the east coast to the Bahamas, it takes a good engine". What brand and size to you intend to install? Cheers

It seems like I can't touch anything on my boat with out busting a knuckle,,, and if I try and wear gloves I end up dropping everything into the bilge. I am glad my hours being spent in the tight lazarette are done for the moment, I am a small dude so I can't imagine how a taller person could even get in to work on them. Thanks for watching Andy!

James, you may wish to look over the parts carefully to see what might be worth keeping. Perhaps the water pump (useful), the fuel injection pump (really expensive), the exhaust elbow which can fail suddenly (all the corrosion is on the inside). Other parts?

Hey James, It's almost like we're insinc with each other. I just pulled my fuel & water tanks. My water tank had 2 inspection/cleaning ports in it however my fuel tank has non. It's an aluminum fuel tank, I believe yours in as well. What are you using for an inspection port? I can't seem to find any aluminum inspection ports. Are you planning on using plastic or are you making your own? Please let me know how your solving your problem because it would sure help me out. Thanks!
@SailorJames
@SailorJames 7 жыл бұрын
So with my fuel tank (which you will see most of this in the next episode) I ended up cutting access ports in the (as you mentioned) Aluminum tank. I first cut one and found there was a baffle inside so i had to cut another one, I ordered aluminum discs on eBay and drilled them out to take bolts. I ordered plates that were 1 inch bigger than my access holes then lined them up on the tank and drilled/tapped the tank to accept the bolts. Then I made a gasket, coated the Stainless Steel bolts with Lanocote (which smells terrible) to prevent galvanic corrosion and used nylon washer between the bolt head and access plate. It was a pretty easy job, easier than I thought as shown in the video coming next week. Feel free to message me with any questions I probably have photos I can sending you of my process.
