I'm late in adding my two cents but since hubby and I own hull 181 figured I'd go ahead with my thoughts. The negatives Nick and Therese mentioned are spot on. Husband and I are tall people (5'9" and 6'3") and can't see past the enclosure while seated at the helm. We're in the process of sourcing a new seating arrangement so any suggestions or comments would be much appreciated. The helm has no safety enclosure to the port side but we've rigged up lines when needed and the enclosure for the cockpit comes down separately to provide a bit of safety as well as wind protection too, so that is an issue we solved easily. I agree that the cushions are hard and uncomfortable, and we'll be replacing them before we set out in 2024. For now, we've made some memory foam pads to use where needed. We added memory foam toppers to the berths too, which makes sleeping so much better. The stock mattresses are just a bit better than plywood. The build quality is, agreed, production cat standard, but so far, three years in, it's in great shape with no twisting, misalignment, or peeling. We're very happy with the systems - the engines are stout, b&g gear works very well,etc. The stepped back mast and self tacking jib make short handed sailing super easy. The post in the middle of the salon disappears after a while. We removed the fixed bench inside and replaced it with two folding teak chairs that can be used inside or out, making the spacious salon even more spacious. I hate the oven. Seems most production cats have it. We already have the replacement. You're completely right, with main and jib it doesn't go anywhere fast, so we've added a gennaker which makes all the difference. We don't plan on being in a hurry when we sail :). I think if you buy a production cat you're compromising in some places and you're going to have to do some mods to make it your own, and we feel that having started with the 42 was a good place to start. Oh! Forgot to mention the handholds. They work well for us AND they work for short visitors, who will not be going forward in inclement weather.

Laurie, if you haven't stumbled upon it yet look up the Lagoon 42 Facebook group. It has a ton of useful information and pictures of helm seat upgrades. Some folks are using the Taco Marine bench seat. Others are now installing the seat that came with the Lagoon 46 - new L42s are coming with this new seat so it seems that Lagoon listened to the prior owners.

We own a Lagoon 42. It is about 2 years old now. We sailed her from Portsmouth, VA to the Bahamas last November and returned this past week. We added grab rails to the cockpit roof as you go up the stairs - both port and stbd. We also added the washer/dryer combo in the owners hull cabinets before entering the head. Another great addition was the Code 0. On our return trip from the Bahamas we hit 14 knots and consistently held 10+ knots with a beam reach and Code 0. So far, we are very pleased with the boat - we also sponsor a Sea Scout Ship and usually have 10 or more scouts and adults on board when we do our weekend sails around the lower Chesapeake Bay. She has plenty of space!

As a future L42 owner (mine arriving in June 2022) 1. What does the standard helm Bimini look like ? Do I need the the reinforced composite Bimini ? What is the original one made of ? 2. What does the B&G navigation pack that comes with the essential equipment configuration consist of exactly ? Nothing in the lagoon website explains these issues. Thanks in advance Hatem A Tawfik, MD Cairo Egypt

@@hatemtawfik Check out the Lagoon 42 Facebook group. It is very active and has all the answers to your question and more! It is a private group so you will need to ask to join. Good luck! The only bimini's I have personally seen are the hard ones. Seems to be the most common. We like ours as you can get on top of it to gain access to the top of the sail bag.

My husband and I own a 2019 Lagoon 42, Ocean Song. In general we think your review is spot on! We agree about both the integrated grab rail and helm seat height. We've modified our helm seat to raise it 6 inches and we added a fold-down platform (8 inches high) so that even a relatively short person will have a good view of both bows while sitting or standing. We plan to add stainless handholds along the cabin top. We've also added a hand hold just behind the helm seat along the bimini top as one goes down the stairs from the helm to the cockpit. I would give the 42 a slightly higher performance grade, at least a 6. Part of performance to us is ease of sailing. The 42 is easier for us to sail than our old Catalina 30. For a cruising couple it's hard for me to image a catamaran that is more easily handled than the Lagoon 42. All controls are at the helm and all the sails are easy to hoist and reefing is a "breeze". We have two electric winches at the helm. Again, excellent review! Linda and Jim Woodall

Very interesting. Do you find marina manoeuvring not too overwhelming? Esp. versus monohull.
@lindawoodall822
@lindawoodall822 5 жыл бұрын
@@freduk5342 With two engines she can spin on a dime. We don't use the wheel in tight quarters, but rather the engine throttles. So in that respect it is easier to manoeuvre the boat in tight quarters vs a 42 foot monohull. It is quite beamy at 25ft., so being able to see all 4 corners is important. I tell people, when they say "that's a big boat" all boats feel small on the ocean and big in the marina! Cheers!

We own a 2017 model 42. Sailed Lagoon for decades so it’s difficult not to be somewhat bias. But when it came to purchase the changes made by Lagoon moving mast back made huge difference for vessel response when tacking; in addition all controls to helm; ease in reefing main is why we own the 42. I am 64 years old and know I can handle this vessel alone with total confidence. Only one requirement you must have the bow sprint for a utility sail to improve cruising performance. We fitted a UPS sail and that changed the game for us and made this vessel a 10 for handling a CRUISING vessel. (we were not in the market for a performance vessel). In correct conditions we can get upwards 60% of wind speed. Lastly living aboard comfort is a 10 on the 42. We did not want to feel like we were camping. Boarding, ease to helm and one level cockpit and salon matter. Enough fridge, storage and ample room for 6 people at the table. Secure arrangement for fixing food while under way. And I appreciate the thin cockpit cushions. So easy to stack when we hose down cockpit.

a few things come to mind...1) include dealer and manufacturers warranty/service and world wide support availability as a parameter 2) if Lagoon doesn't offer a handrail it would be easy to add a aftermarket item...3) the channel system seems to be ideal for a rain water catch deal.....all in all a great revue and breakdown ..i look forward to the rest of your search

I have a Lagoon 42. 2018, Hull #171. S/V Ocean Potion. I loved your review. First thing I did was put handholds all over. I could have planned better if I knew I was going to put so many. But after the first couple, I added more, then more! I used several of the 24” in stock at West marine. I also ordered some 36” on line. On the coach roof behind the helm station and the starboard side above the winch and stairs along the coach roof. I then basically added more all along the coach roof so you don’t use their crummy hand hold at all. I also added one on each stairway, the port side being a 12”. My friend also built me a teak footstool in two pieces and clamp together. It raises about 6”. I have not gotten around to taking the seat pad off the helm station and replacing with one the will raise the height. I love the davids, some people don’t? I fit a Zar 12’ Mini with a 25hp Suzuki. Single line goes straight to the winch ! I also had solar added above the davits and that protects the dingy. They built an aluminum rail system and also used supports to the David poles for support. . I also replaced with Lithium batteries and to complete the system, a Victron 3,000 inverter/charger. The Victron quarto 5000 would only fit in the engine compartment and I didn’t want it there. I am so pleased with the system! I have been a lone time boater but mostly planning hulls. This is my first new boat and my first sailboat! I am recently retired and we left Kemah,Texas on March 1. We are in Marathon, Florida where the upgrades have been made. We will no go to the Bahamas and start our adventure. I have been following for a long time. Love you guys!

Not sure if this a safety issue or not, but ships wheelhouse windows are never vertical this is to avoid reflection interfering with visibility out. I know its a trademark of Lgoon to have the vertical windows but it may compromise your view out especially in the evening or conning from inside whilst under way. On ships the regulations state the windows should be raked not less than 10 degrees or more than 25 degrees to avoid reflection.

That overhang on the roof will keep your windows shaded at all times in the saloon. That will lower the temperature inside for free. I think that's important in the kind of places you guys sail. Also, vertical windows means a larger space (volume) inside.

I have a lagoon 42 OV. I looked for 2 years for the right cat, the 42 was the one. Upgraded to the 57 HP motors, LPo battery bank, better cushions, B and G all way around. The only downside I have is the galley sink needs to have a barrier on the back side to protect the sliding windows. Forgot the seat, yes too short. Our shorter crew sat/lounged up on the ledge just inside the bimini like cats on their watch, tethered in! I would love to see how you would fix this, my quick option is to buy a large thick cushion.Good luck!

28/50 for me. Great Fair Review. Scoring every aspect is a good way to organise one's thoughts but at the end of the day there are only 2 important questions 1) Will she look after you in a storm 2) How does she make you feel. For me, I love the interior and I know from Catamaran Impi Channel that she can handle massive storms and that build quality is great. But I would not be able to get around the the inferior performance (especially sailing upwind) because motoring in a cat into an coming sea is not fun as they tend to hobby-horse - so if you can sail upwind it would make a difference to me. I do hope there is a Catana Review. My score is 28/50 on the Lagoon

Ok, for as far as we can judge from a distance and not being able to feel the boat and its interior: * Safety&Design - 6 The hand rail is a realy big NoGo for us. * Build quality - 8 Not being able to feel this, we rely on your judgement. * Interior design - 9 We absolutely LOVE this interior and its spacious feel. * Performance - 6 Compared to other Cats, not to a monohull that is. * Value for money - 7 So that is 36 out of 50. Love, Rob and Jouke

Could they not design a “(laterally) mobile ball” sunk into that recessed rail with a ring or cord/"leash” to hold onto or clip into ?

Well done, the best review of a boat I have seen. I liked the size of this boat, and I do think it is the sweet spot for couples that have visitors on occasion. When I looked Lagoon last year I also looked at used ones and I was not impressed with wear and tear of two year old boats, but still agree ok for the money.

Nicely done!! Very impressive video! For some reason I thought the cats were far more expensive. I’m a power boat guy but use to sail smaller boats when we were kids. I know motor/diesel. Wish we can all get along...lol! It’s all educate! Anyway.... the wife and I are planning on taking off in 2-3 years and cruising the Bahamas, Caribbean and to south america countries. I will be in my early sixties...damn that sounds old! and wondering how much work it really is to sail. I know they have come along way. But also the upkeep/ maintenance compared to a power boat. That Lagoon is ABSALUTELY GORGEOUS!!!! With a sh*t ton of room! We were lookin at power cats but they’re not as sexy and don’t look as big! Anyway can’t wait to see what u end up with ! I’m excited for you guys!!

I looked at the L42 and it was my favourite of the lot. However, I don't like the helm position stuck up above the main cockpit. It will feel a bit lonely stuck up there compared to the Wynn's Leopard where the helm is in the main cockpit. If you're on watch you really do need to be up there to see what's directly in front of you.

Only just got round to watching this. Boat aside, congratulations on devising and presenting a simple but valid method of measurement. I found this very logical and easy to understand. I’m a boating novice by your standards, looking for our first boat and hopefully live-aboard in one hit. We were at the Southampton boat show last year and struggled to rationalise the differences, pro’s and con’s and value for money across a range of (at the time) monohull boats. Having gained more experience and knowledge, we are now considering Catamarans as the long term solution. So This review series has come just at the right time for us. We will be back at Southampton this year. Are we allowed to use your method for our own purposes? Or is this a copyright thing? Fully understand if so. Anyway, well done. Looking forward to the rest of the series. Maybe we’ll buy you a beer one day somewhere. 😀 👍

Great, honest review. My wife and I are basically shopping for the same type of boat. I can wait to get her to Annapolis so she can step foot on these great catamarans. My short list is the FP 40, Lagoon 42, Leopard 40 and Seawind 1260.

Sailing Yacht Ruby Rose the Seawind 1260 is actually at the top of my list for a couple reasons. I do like the dual helms, and they are protected from the elements. I also like the galley down setup. There is less freeboard on the 1260 compared to all the other production boats but I would think there would be less windage at anchorages. Might make it easier maneuvering in close quarters. Of course the Seawind is like finding a unicorn in the USA so I can’t wait to see the Seawind in person.

Well i said it before and i'll say it again - what a great video , informative and tight , just on point ! I think this catamaran is great for charter , but not for cruising . And the video editing is just great ! You put some real work in it ! I can't wait to see the next video ! P.s. Do you guys consider buying a second hand cat ? 2-3 years old maybe ? Because i heard somewhere that sometime 2-3 years old boat is better because you will skip all the adjustments that a new cat will need after some sailing time . Sorry for my english ! Cheers ! :)

On the last scene, I noticed Nick sitting at the edge of the sofa with his elbow on the navigation table. It brought to my attention the fact that the navigation table does not have dedicated sitting arrangements making it uncomfortable to work at the table without a backrest. The other issues such as the helm seat and the handrails are easy to solve even after purchase but the problem with the navigation table would require a major redesign of both the table and the sofa. No mention was made of the access from the deck to the mast base for dealing with the mainsail and the quality of the rigging and tackle in regards to ocean crossing environment. As of now, to me, this looks like a Mediterranean or Caribbean short distance cruiser Otherwise, good review.

@sailingrubyrose
@sailingrubyrose 3 жыл бұрын
It’s a dockside reviewed a new boat, so is impossible to see issues that occur after sailing for a while. We have read of the bulkhead issues and dealt with this topic (before we read about it), in one of our interviews with the naval architect discussing build quality

I have to say this....while the location of the liferaft is nearly perfect, center aft, I do not like the recessed alcove. Try this: lie down on a coffee table, place a 100# brick under the coffee table, reach under and behind you and try and move it. It isn't going anywhere. You have 0 leverage. You will end up in the water before it moves. The only way that thing is coming out of that alcove is with some sort of lever, crowbar 6 ft long, shovel ( Do you keep a shovel on board?), or giant stick. (I am guessing if you don't keep a shovel you are not going to carry a 6 foot long stick with you either) I am extremely serious about safety. I just don't like a liferaft placed in a inaccessible location. Still it is a very nice cat. Cheers

First I cannot agree - I want to fully agree to your complains about safety. Last year I drove a Nautitech - they also use those grabs. I could use them (ok, I'm 6'2) but didn't feel save as with a standard handrail. The notes from Therysa about the cushions, also I have to agree, with the exeption, I would like to know were to stowe. What's about travelling in harsh weather? - OK, then I would suggest a Nicks abilities to make a curtain. If I'm already complaining: Think about your habits of cooking - were are the herbs, were are the bottles of Oil, were will the stored food be (think of the many overhead cabinets in your boat). I had several problems with that. IMHO that's not fine for living full time with that. Salon: I absolutely appreciate that windows- I think, the hold of the sun a little bit - not overheating the salon. What I don't like: There is no cosy place to sit during a long night watch. On my journey we arranged the cushions different to sit in direction to easily monitor the horizon. Performance: I think many catamarans are weak. Also most have a fat top main, no aft stay. So you will face problems with reaching winds. Solution for all: have additional headsails like a genacker.

Headroom is too limited for some of us :-) I'd also suggest using a Balsa core is unaceptable these days - surely a foam or closed cell core is cheaper and easier to fit and would reduce the likelyhood of water ingress/delamination that affects many older balsa cores.
