Aside from the beautiful views and fantastic editing, I love the way the two of you work together as partners. You communicate and make a plan and set up all your lines before every anchor and docking which is so much nicer than the confusion and chaos often seen. Also I just can't get over how the two of you keep everything so neat, orderly and clean. Wonderful video as always!

Absolutely! You have to admit, they married well. I’m sure they may edit out any unkind words... but this looks almost like the perfect pairing! They both seem to treat each other with respect, and kudos to you both for being troopers! Cold morning, my ex-wife would have been bitc... I mean nagging, unhappy, complaining before the day even started. Totally pointless as it doesn’t help you prepare for the days challenges. You two have a gift! Respect to you both! Keep up the good work!

That WAS a good job docking, Captain. You deserve a pat on the back. Docking is hard in strange places, settling tons of float into tiny spaces. A nervous time, even for old salts. So satisfying when you get it right - in front of God and everybody! Cheers to you two.
@1988texasaggie4 жыл бұрын
Thought of this when K was on the bow pulling in the anchor. Have you ever considered 'testing' your ability to swim in all of that gear? I seem to recall you doing a 'man overboard' test in the Caribbean to practice coming about to 'rescue', but staying afloat in Caribbean clothing and staying afloat in Norway clothing are two different beasts. Those 4 layers may mean needing to wear the PFD more when out on the deck.
@DirtbikeXpeditions4 жыл бұрын
Hypothermia would be more of a concern rather than buoyancy....those clothes would actually trap air for the short term and actually make it easier to float. Once saturated, they become pretty much neutrally buoyant. So as long as the clothes don’t restrict movement too much, it shouldn’t be a problem. With that said, wearing a PFD is always the best option

When towing your dinghy even in light rain, consider removing the motor. It will save you a ton of work, time and money. As the boat starts collecting water with the motor still attached, the stern will get heavier making it easy for the to be overturned be a rough wave.

I am 81year old sailor. I lived and worked in Bergen for 5 weeks in 1962. Like all cities things change over time. I really got to enjoy the rain. I was there in September thru part of October. I had 2 weeks of Sun. I should have known something was up, when I saw everyone sitting on the park benches facing the Sun. :) I got so use to the rain, I didn't mind the water flowing off my nose. There seem to be a coffee/ pastry shop on each corner, and I took full advantage of them. To me it was a music city. I enjoyed the 2 guys who played violin and piano at supper time in my Hotel Norge. There were band concerts in the park and there was the symphony. After all it's the birth place of Edvard Grieg. I will stop I have to many stories to tell. I hope you enjoy your stay. The people were a joy. Oh and the girls. :) I will continue to enjoy your videos very much.

@@SailingUma I have been watching Cat Cruisers and Mono-Hull ( Half a Sailboat ) channels for a few years now. While I do enjoy watching the ease of sailing in the big Cats it seems to me when they are sailing they are missing something. When I watch you sail and i see the ship heeled over and you can hear the slap of the sea on the hull that seems like real sailing to me. Now maybe if Nikki and Jason would get SV Curiosity up on one hull sailing in a rough sea I would feel the same about a Big Cat. Thanks for the videos.
@RiverWoods1114 жыл бұрын
@@Bill23799 Monohull is what we call real sailing, but there is also something to be said for comfort of a Cat. It really depends on what you are looking for in your journey. If you are out for a sail then Monohull wins every time, but if your sailboat is your home, then many people get tired of being heeled over is uncomfortable. Also the Niki's and Jason's of the world don't sail to sail, they sail to get someplace. They didn't start out on dinghy sailboats and work their way up to a big boat. They wanted to cross oceans and their RV wouldn't and couldn't do that, so they bought a cat which is a floating RV/home often referred to as a sailing Condo. I am personally torn between do I want the comfort of a cat or do I want the sailing of a monohull heeling over and the feel of the wind which you can't get on a CAT. I started my sailing journey sailing little Laser dinghies, and I fell in love with the sailing. I look as the Islands as an excuse to go sailing not a destination as much. So tough decision! Do you sail? Have you ever sailed a dinghy? or small sailboat? I always recommend people start there!

When I first crewed on a sailboat, I was impressed by how the skipper could predict when we would get hit by a gust. And then when I got my own boat, it's three, two, one, here it is. I think of it like someone sneaking up on you. The first time you get smacked up side the head. The next time your senses are hightened and you look for it. More of an inland water skill. Open water sailors didn't have deal with that as much. Enjoyed watching as always.

Dan and Kika, Another lovely video, as always. Kudos on the flawless production quality. I have some landlubber questions about docking/mooring: - How do you know which specific docking/mooring positions you are allowed to use? - I know from previous videos that some (marinas) have varying costs per day, but what about the "public" dock (like now in Bergen)? Is there a cost there, or being "public", is it free? If free, what prevents folks from tying up indefinitely? - Do you ever/often find no room to dock/moor? I assume yes, occasionally, and thus you need to look elsewhere? Thanks in advance for your insights! Oh, P.S - I have not seen any YT content from you on how you are dealing with the current pandemic. How has it impacted your ability to move as you would like? How does it impact you day to day as well as long term logistical strategies? Thanks and best regards, P

I might have missed it, but here in God's country of coastal BC, stern tying means a loop around whatever, when you leave you untie the one end and pull the line into the boat without leaving the cockpit. Some will use sacrificial line around a tree so as to not kill the tree with constant chafing. Into and deeper than just the bark. The sacrificial line is a loop and the stern ty line is threaded through the loop and back to the boat. But us lazy Mariners always loop to avoid a dinghy ride.

I've really been enjoying your adventures. I became aware of you when I saw an article on your electric motor and followed you until you were in Holland. I then binge watched you from Step 1 until now. If I may I would like to make 2 observations. In the earlier blogs I heard the steering chain slap on the steering pillar. I didn't hear it again until this episode. I recommend that you tension the steering cables because slack the chain may slip over the sprocket. I have experienced this. I also noticed that from time to time you pull the genoa sheet while its in the winch slot. This causes more friction thus making extra work for you.

This was a good episode to showcase your communication and manoeuvring skills (leaving fjord and docking). You work well as a team and it is good that both of you know how to trim sails. It is wonderful to see a couple enjoying each other’s company and operate as one. Regarding your dingy filling with rain and wave splash, it may be a good idea to have a rain fly installed to shed the water off of it while towing it or while at anchor/moored. Just a couple of snaps should do it.

We did some early spring surveying work aboard a 110' ship, so layering just meant your jeans and a winter parka. Plus, anyone on an outboard platform had to wear a life vest. The question was, parka or vest first? The answer was that it didn't matter, with water at 34F (1C) your diaphragm muscles freeze and you suffocate, not drown, before the ship can stop. But you wear the PFD as a courtesy to the SAR crews, so they can locate your body and get home by dinnertime.

I think it would be interesting to learn the history of Uma from the initial launch up to the point that you bought her. Old photos and anecdotes from previous owners etc could make an interesting video, if you can track it down.

Love your videos; content, editing and personalities are all great. I really enjoy watching you guys, it's almost like a visit from a favorite niece and her uncle approved beau. An effective way to manage dingy bilges is to mount a small check valve next to the drain bung and plumb it to the bow with two meters of extra hose coiled up. After a rainy night or during a wet passage, pull the dingy close and hook a small hand pump to the hose. If you expect to need a lot of pumping put on more hose and lash it to the towline for convenience. The check valve will drastically reduce the strokes needed to prime the pump. Wishing you fair winds and following seas.
