While I should not complain, I can say this year has seemed so closed off for us. I'm retired military and do property management, which over the past 6 months i have limited to very little. My wife is a nurse and works lots of overtime. Our son is a second year electrical engineering student at Arizona state university, but now is learning from home for all but one class a week. None of wants to be part of the pandemic problem and because of my wife's job if the virus comes to us we need to be pretty certain where it came from if it comes into our home. That said. We have been very closed off. I think we all feel like we are living on the moon and are feeling a bit pent up to say the least. With the blah blah said above to give you my point of reference I can better relate my message. Every time you guys put out a new video my heart gets lifted. You are like lockdown blues medicine. Thank you for everything you do! Have you ever tried kite boarding? I could not surf at all...sucked bad...and i figure I would be twice the failure at kite boarding but always wanted to give it a go.

Hi Randy, Learning to kite board is one of the items on our bucket list, it was there even before we started this adventure 4 years ago. Our problem is we don't have a big enough dinghy to buzz around as safety boat whilst we are learning. We were hoping to stop in a lagoon in South Africa where they teach kite boarding and learn there, maybe we will get there next year instead now. Thanks for taking the time to write us that message. :-)

I bought you said you couldn't surf🤔Straight away,you are standing up,having a good go at it,some good natural ability I'd say👌You must have a good supply of some kind of legal tender to pay the food man,seeing you have no access to a teller machine or bank.I'm sure you'll be able to get your hands on another board somewhere before leaving this surfing mecca,poor patch😢I won't miss next week,I'm sure I've mentioned it before,I love your dinghy,so versatile,and the sailing rig you have for it,is the best I've seen.Best wishes🙂

lf you have the fiberglass and epoxy and a few pieces of wood for stringers, you could patch up Patch! You would need to shorten it some to cut out the bad foam sections.

It's so awesome that you've discovered surfing, especially considering where you're presently located. I discovered surfing when I was in my early 40's and only wished that I'd started much sooner. Learning to surf gives you a whole new perspective, and in your situation something that you can look forward to everyday. Great video!

Seems to me that some thickened epoxy and some strips of fiberglass would patch old patch back together pretty well. A few hours of sanding and you would have a solid board again.

Hey Matt! You’ll find it a lot easier (And safer) if you put the leash on your back leg (In your case, your left leg!) I have quite a few surfing friends who are moaning incessantly about the fact that their favourite surf spots in the Mentawais are seeing THOUSANDS of waves sliding through, unridden, so enjoy them all you can!

Hi Michel, To be honest I thought my right foot would be my back foot, but when I jumped on the board I popped up right foot forward. I did not notice this until I was editing the video! As you suggest it was much better when I put the leash on my left foot! We are still in Tellos at the moment but plan to visit the Mentawais when restrictions allow. Although the waves there may be a bit big for us beginners!

Hi guys! Keep practicing the take-off (The act of jumping to your feet as fast as possible) until it is both instantaneous and automatic. Best place to practice is with your board on the sand (Boards’ nose pointing gently downhill) Also keep paddling in still water whenever possible to build up shoulder strength. Matt; Pay particular attention to how high your upper chest is off the board when paddling IF you start to develop tenderness in your rib cartilage, due to to constant irritation of rubbing on the board - I have this problem chronically :-( Women hopefully shouldn’t get this problem due to natural cushioning of their breasts. It can be very painful after days and days of surfing.... I’d love to see/hear how you’re doing! :-) Enjoy the ride! (Very jealous!) Cheers, Mike

You actually need two boards when your learning to big wave surf you can get in real trouble really fast it's better to have a friend along plus it's really fun to surf with a friend

Looks idyllic. I lived in Bermuda in my twenties and was able to sail every weekend and snorkel after work. I then returned to work in the City of London and commuted to work. I found it tough to adapt back to the rat race. I would keep doing what you are doing for as long as possible. I would not be in a rush to get back to England.

after you stand up squat down as low as possible to lower your centre of gravity it will make it a lot easier to stay balanced especially on small waves xx

Looking forward to more about The Machine next time. We just bought a set of Spindrift 10N plans; we have a 11 1/2 foot Bolger Cartopper which we love, but she's too big to stow on deck. We'll probably recycle the sail and spars from the Cartopper.

Really nice episode guys. You really seemed to be getting the hang of surfing, I hope you find another board soon! Matt, I remember you telling me some time last year that if I could navigate across the English Channel then I could navigate across the Atlantic - well I've now done just that, twice. I decided to return to the UK and set off again next year when (hopefully) verything will be a bit more "normal". My return trip from western Brittany to Plymouth (15/16 Sept) was single handed and took 28 hours, 90% of which was in fog - two firsts in one trip!

Argh Fog! The last time we saw fog was in New Zealand, a long time ago now. Seriously though the Atlantic is just more days of the same sailing (minus the fog) and with less shipping and land to bump into. Sounds like a sensible decision, we could have set off across the Indian Ocean but decided it is best to stay put and try again next year.
