Your point would be valid if we were using a bunk carpet that had a vinyl or rubber backing. We are not using that but instead we are using a breathable carpet called “Boat Blanket” from Sailrite. It will not hold water and will dry out very fast. So, you can cover all 4 sides of the bunk boards.

No, we are using stainless steel staples which hold up much better in a wet environment.

I am not sure you watched the video because we are covering the top and sides of the bunk boards as well as most of the bottom of the board. No, lumpy mess will be visible. We also are using a breathable carpet called "Boat Blanket" from Sailrite so the boards and carpet will dry out easily since the carpet is not rubber backed.

For those of you watching this , this is the typical way of doing this although it will not last . Who really wants to do this in a couple of years again ?. not me so listen up ( read up , LoL...... 1. replace your old boards with kiln dried 2x4 or 2x5 boards 2. buy some polyurethane fiberglass resin ( research how to mix with MEK ) . 3. Put 2 coats on with cheap brush waiting 25 hours between coats ( be sure to coat the ends good ). 4. do NOT wrap your pretty boards completely around the boards ! this traps water and water trapped is not a good thing. Instead , wrap around top and ends and trim with razor knife so the bottom is free of carpet.5. to install use short lags and pre drill holes then fill the holes with silicone so the holes do not rot.5. Botta Boom , Botta Bam , your bunks will now last many many years I have done it this way for umpteen years and never had any issues. Do it right or don't do it all is my motto. Oh , step 5 . Get back on the water ! ! !

I disagree with how they are installing the carpet. In the video, they wrapped the 2x4 completely like a cocoon. You want the bottom side of the 2x4 exposed to let the water drain quickly and to allow the 2x4's to dry as quickly as possible after the boat is launched to prevent warping and rotting of the 2x4. Only 3 sides (plus the ends) of the 2x4's should be carpeted.

well I'm in the middle of doing my trailer and I would think if your going through the trouble of carpet why would you not replace the boards pressure treated wood is cheap.....

+Greg Salazar Yes, that may be a good idea. However, the EPA has put so many regulations on how treated lumber is produced that sometimes older treated lumber is better than new.

Stainless staples will rust away if the board is pressure treated. Need to use Monel staples

Why change the carpet but not the running boards as well while you are at it? Plan on selling to a customer and cutting corners?? lol

Hi Rusty, We still have the boat and trailer to this day, we didn't change the running boards as the EPA has put so many regulations on how treated lumber is produced that sometimes older treated lumber is better than new. I remind you that this video is 9 years old so we may have replaced it if we were to do it again today.

Sailrite i see. I’d really like to think a new board would be better than a old half rotted one after all that effort would have been more stable and a good idea but it’s not my boat trailer lol.
