Sain: Just an Archetype? [Fire Emblem: Support Science #22] Fire Emblem: Blazing Sword

In this Support Science, I talk about Sain, from Fire Emblem: Blazing Sword (FE7). Sain is widely known as a womanizer, and while most of his support conversations focus on this side of his character, I believe that his other traits, like his loyalty, talent as a knight and, being a genuinely caring person, help ground his otherwise archetypical personality.
Sain's role in the story in Lyn Mode was pretty important - he helped find, secure and protect Lyn from the beginning. At the end, despite his transgressions, proves to be among Caelin's most reliable knights, even earning him the position of Knight Subcommander. A year later, Sain is still protecting Lady Lyndis alongside his boon companion, Kent and other members of the Lyndis Legion. Lyn reuniting with Eliwood now allows us to read into Sain's support conversations.
Sain's supports are an extension of his characterization displayed in Lyn mode. He is a hopeless womanizer sleaze, and he's a loyal friend. But, regardless of how light and breezy he is, on the battle field, well, I don’t want to say he’s a hardened veteran, but he was named knight subcommander for a reason. The problem with his supports though is that there are a handful of bafflingly flat support chains which do next to nothing, if nothing at all, to flesh out his character further. This leads a lot of people to determine that Sain isn’t a “good” character. And while I can agree that he’s not the deepest character in the cast, the moments where he is forced to change his behavior into someone who takes himself seriously, however seemingly short-lived they are, round him out and dispel the notion that he’s one note, or even a gag character.

Sain is one of my favorite fe characters in the series He is honestly probably the most funny character in the series and all his supports make me love him even more. His supports with fiora being my favorite He legit flirts with every single woman in camp and just keeps being rejected. I'd love to see a support with viada where she tells him to just f*** off and actually get sain to reconsider his unique way of finding love. Like gosh he should be in heroes already.

Idk why people dislike and disregard flirty male characters so easily, usually because they're lighthearted and not broody and broken. In most media, but particularly in Fire Emblem, the lighthearted characters are usually the ones who have been through the most and keep their smile face, an unbreakable spirit. They're always my favorites, Inigo and Sylvain at the top.

As someone who isn't fond of Sain and characters like him such as Virion, it isn't about him not being broody, it's the fact that a good chunk of his interactions are just being flirty and being completely dense to a situation and not being anything more. It's like a harem protagonist who can't take a hint when women are dead obvious throwing themselves at him, his archetype is the reverse extreme, who can't seem to get why his approach isn't working and continue to be annoying to the other person, and it's rarely if ever addressed. It just becomes an overused gag at that point. Doesn't help that they add a level of cockiness that some people like me find bothersome. Sylvain for me is probably my favorite of his archetype. I thought I'd end up hating him initially since omg Virion/Sain 3.0, but nope. He actually is aware how he approaches people and tries to account for how they take to his antics, he's just persistent and would even call people out on characters like Dorothea giving him the act in return. He has his share of relationships that do the same and call him out on how his attitude and lack of care at time can be dangerous be it on the battlefield, or a person's feelings.

The whole idea that the light hearted characters have gone through a lot is part of why I love Raven/Lucius' dynamic so much. Both of them have gone through so much, but Lucius staying as upbeat and nice as he has is part of what helps Raven. His niceness helps him on a baseline level, but his experiences arr what makes Raven listen.

I like this kind of support science cause it highlights how a character can have meaningful moments, even if they’re not as important to the plot. Damn, the support science series strikes again! Its these ones I don't expect that are the best imo. It's adorable how he and Kent both fill in for each other's weaknesses, Kent is serious and grounded, but a bit naive and sort of a busybody. Sain is light-hearted and a bit of an airhead, but he's better at rolling with the waves and is friendly and sweet-natured. They fit together like a self-sustaining system. Imo it's no wonder they eventually became the two highest ranking knights in Caelin.

Surprised he hasn't been added yet. Kent and Sain are the "Stahl and Sully" of Fe 7, not just in archetype, but in terms of early game characters that make an impression on people. Feh has been pretty decent about banners the past 1.5 years so it can be anything really. Bar of course FE 4 or 5, not just cause it got alts recently, but in general they don't get a lot of love.

there's other subtle things I notice about Sain, like how he's the one who correctly identifies who is sending people to kill Lyn, how he only has one conversation with Florina, but he consistently looks out for her wellbeing, and he's glad to see her grow more assertive, and I actually like his supports with Serra. A bunch of Serra's support partners are just mean to her. Sain actually enjoys her company.

Great vid. Your analysis is spot on as usual. That said, I'd like to defend the Rebecca and Fiora endings. For Rebecca, it's a matter of personality. She is a playable version of the archetypal giggling village girl. She has been shown to fawn over hot guys (Raven) and knights (Lowen) Sain is both of those things. So after the journey is over and his liege decides to bail, Sain decides "You know what, I think I will go be with Rebecca." With Rebecca's personality, I think Sain could just show up and she would be sold. As for Fiora, honestly I think this was done solely so that Kent and Sain can stay bros via the Kent/Farina ending. You can even throw some headcanon in there and say that Kent and Sain helped to reform Illia's Men's Knight Brigade so that it wasn't so terrible. Although, if I can go on a tangent, they really should have rounded out the group with a Sain/Farina support. Sain's flirting combined with Farina's latent girl power persona could have made for a fun dynamic that keeps the bros together while preserving the wholesome goodness that is Kent/Fiora.

Those were the first words Johnny said to Sonya in MK 9, and the fact that they got married after that make me as happy as can be. But I digress, I like that comparison. Their supports definitely leave something to be desired, but I've always felt that making the relationship dynamics believable was more important than supports when it comes to fe ships. And with an overtly flirtatious character like Sain, making the dynamic believable is incredibly easy.

As for your comment, yeah, thanks for agreeing. I always found them a better pair than Sain's other pairing. I do agree with the man when he said no Priscilla ending is a crime. Isadora though is something I never saw coming. If Elibe ever gets a remake, they need to standardize support growths. Make the speed universal across characters. It would help people like Serra a lot. (She gains only +1 for every turn, and C rank needs 80 pts. Only with Sain here she gains +2 per turn. Sain and Isadora is also a hard pair to support due to also them gaining +1 per turn only.)

Ghast went into detail on Priscilla's personality but not Rebecca's, does this mean a future Support Science for Rebecca? Let's fuckin GOOOOOOOO But in all seriousness good job Ghast! I'm loving this series quite a bit! I love Sain a lot and this episode was fantastic!

Happy birthday! In fanfic, Sain is usually unbearable, but I love his presentation in game. He's far from an idiot, and in contrast to Saul or Sylvain, he's more of a romantic than a sleazebag. There was one fic that painted him as "in love with the idea of love", which I thought was a neat way to view him, and credibly explained why he ended up pursuing Fiora when they had no chemistry. There were a few other interesting fics that painted Sain with an edge of pathos, more akin to his Priscilla support. In any case, I'm glad to see you defend him against the crowd who figure Sain just exists to harass women. He's way better than that.

How did I miss this video when it came out? I'm glad I'm not alone in loving the seemingly shallow flirts. I have such a soft spot for the smiling smooth talkers like Sain, Inigo, and Sylvain. All my favorites of their respective games. Sylvain especially stole the spotlight in 3H. He blew out the competition for best character in that game to me- and there was a lot of competition for that spot amongst 3H characters. These 3 boys all have such big hearts and want to fool everyone into thinking otherwise on first impression. So weak to them. I played FE games all out of order. I played FE7 after 3H and Awakening. When Sain showed up I immediately knew I was doomed to adore him based on my past experiences with the flirty ones. Good video anaylsis.

I've always had a soft spot for the red and green knights in FE, but Kent and Sain are definitely my favourite. And their supports are wholesome and heartwarming and show a side of them that you usually don't get to see very often in their other supports (Kent being a bit awkward and love-sick and Sain being a true bro and wingman). I really hope FE7 gets a remake some day and their characters get expanded some more. :D

When I played Blazing Sword, I remember getting very attached to Sain, as a funny character as well as one of my best unit (I 1v1'ed the final boss with him and some healing support) I think he IS an enjoyable character, even though he isn't as fleshed as others
