Currently reading the History of the Franks. Love your rendition of that passage. 😂 I've watched this video so many times 😅

That paragraph was a proper riot. I can't imagine that Gregory didn't know full well what he was doing, and I am even more likely to add him to my list for it.

Just checked Amazon-Lewis Thorpe translation still available. Now on my wish list. Dying while emptying bowels, wasn't that what happened to Arius? What a way to go!

Oh, my old friend, Gregory of Tours. Many years ago I had two units left to fulfil my degree requirements. I chose the Origins of England, Ireland and France ( of course Bede was there and thank you for yesterday’s Penguin) and the Viking age. I think I enjoyed those two units more than I had any of the other subjects I had done up until that time. Sadly I cannot find my copy of G of T. Hope I can replace it. Thanks Steve!

I would date the Dark Ages as starting with the Islamic conquests in the 7th century. Before that the Mediterranean world functioned pretty much as it had before AD 476

The Dark Ages and Renaissance are my own blind spot in comparison with the Classics, so this is great. I never knew how fun Gregory could be, especially with how things ended for the Merovingians.

He wrote in such incorrect Latin that scholars now believe that he was writing in the common language of the Romans back then. I am reading sporadically from 6th century authors: Cassiodorus, Boethius and Eugippius, yet I prefer to listen to Gregory in an English translation on Librivox here on KZbin

That Marxist propaganda at the beginning of this video no doubt set David Murphy's Libertarian Spidey Senses tingling. Enjoyed this. I mean who hasn't occasionally feared death in the toilet.
