One important historical fact was that of John C. Bennett. He committed adultery, but justified it by calling it spiritual wifery. He accused Joseph Smith of teaching him that. That is different than what was actually happening. The accusation of polygamy might have been based on that adulterous polygamy.

Bennett said God didn't know what was done if they called each other spiritual wife and husband. There is no evidence of Joseph Smith having sex with the women to whom he was sealed that had a living husband.

Smith was definitely getting in the sack with married women - a number of the wives sssif their biggest regret in life was lying to their husbands about smith. Teens didn’t get married any more back then than now. Take a look at the census data for early 1800’s - women married on average at age 22, men 25. Which is why Smith was almost castrated for fooling around with Marinda. Also, whatever few teens that did get married most certainly weren’t marrying a 37 year old (smiths age). That’s just reprehensible.

Somebody at a general conference (sorry i forgot who gave it) told a story in which he was driving somewhere with another church authority. He had asked him to turn onto a different street. Later he asked why and he replied (loosely) that there was something that could have possibly offended his soul. I am going to take that counsel and I wish it was there for you before you found out whatever you did. Just remember all the good the church does now. It's a first responder to natural disasters, it helps the poor and needy, and so much more. Don't just see the bad in things or people. Give them second chances.

I have heard that Joseph when people asked if he was a polygamist would say no. The reason being (I've heard) is because he viewed "Eternal Marriage" or sealing as something completely different than polygamy and definitely different than adultery. I'm not sure I understand it entirely but based on this video I know it was entirely sex-driven. I think the one thing we can all agree on is there are much easier ways to have sex than by marrying someone.

There was definitely a Washington agenda against the LDS. The Whigs emerged in the 1830s in opposition to President Andrew Jackson, pulling together former members of the National Republican Party, the Anti-Masonic Party, and disaffected Democrats. The Whigs had some weak links to the defunct Federalist Party, but the Whig Party was not a direct successor to that party and many Whig leaders, including Henry Clay, had aligned with the rival Democratic-Republican Party. Joseph Smith had the precedent to raise a party large enough to compete directly with the emerging parties.

The host conveniently skips over several relevant facts. The Nauvoo city council, on 6/10/1844 issued: "Resolved, by the City Council of the City of Nauvoo, that the printing office from whence issues the "Nauvoo Expositor" is a public nuisance, and also all of said Nauvoo Expositors, which may be, or exist in said establishment, and the Mayor is instructed to cause said printing establishment and papers to be removed without delay, in such manner as he shall direct." So that is probably an illegal order as the City of Nauvoo Charter promises to abide by both the State of Illinois and the United States Constitutions. Worse, was the order which Mayor Joseph Smith issued to the Marshall on the same day: "You are hereby commanded to destroy the printing press from whence issues the Nauvoo Expositor, and pi the type of said printing establishment in the street, and burn all the Expositors and libelous handbills found in said establishment; and if resistance be offered to your execution of this order by the owner or others, demolish the house: and if anyone threatens you or the Mayor or the officers of the city, arrest those who threaten you, and fail not to execute this order without delay, and make due return thereon." The video glosses over this part with it as being "abated." Anyone who reads this and is unsure about whether or not this is legal is not a reasonable person. He put the Expositor and its editors on trial, as if the body was of a judicial instead of a legislative character. Smith proposed that the council make some provision for "putting down the Expositor." @@pong320 If a judge issues an illegal search warrant, the police chief and officers are protected from liability. Joseph Smith followed the lawful procedures. Which means he was protected from criminal liability. The city could still be held liable, but not the individuals. That is still how it works today, or there would be far more police in jail. Government officials can not be held criminally liable for official acts. Which is why Trump is insisting that his actions on Jan 6 were official acts of a President and not those of a private individual. I think he will loose that one, since I cannot see how stopping the vote certification can be considered a responsibility of the President. I am not debating the morality of the Expositor destruction, only Smith's liability.

He asked himself for permission to go destroy the private property. And the City Council did not issue an order that said to go destroy the press. Smith added that part himself. And an obviously illegal order from a government body does not absolve officials from liability. Here is yet another proof that you are wrong. If Illinois Governor Ford issued an order instructing officers to "go kill Joseph Smith" and those officers did indeed murder Smith; are you seriously going to argue that those officers "can not be held criminally liable for official acts"? I mean, that is ridiculous. The better example would be that if Governor Ford issued an order to bring Smith in "By any means they deem required" and they murder him and bring him in and then they argue; well, the governor said by any means. You'd obviously be OK with that.

@@pong320 Smith was the Mayor of Nauvoo, not the head of the City Council. 1/3 of the City Council members were not LDS, and yet they all voted for the motion. As Mayor, Joseph was only permitted a vote in the case of a tie, which this was not. While there is reasonable debate that the order itself may have been over reach, Joseph's liability in the matter is not in question. The legal doctrine of limited liability has been upheld many times by the supreme court. There were no grounds to arrest Joseph Smith the individual. This was not a suit against the City of Nauvoo, but a criminal charge against Smith, after two justices had already ruled in his favor.

That said, the idea that Joseph killed two men in the attack is based off of a quote by John Taylor, and seems to be not based in fact: "I afterwards understood that two or three were wounded by these discharges, two of whom, I am informed, died" (History of the Church, Vol. 7, 102-103). Colonel Hay, though, contradicted the idea that Joseph had killed anyone: "Joe Smith died bravely. He stood by the jamb of the door and fired four shots, bringing his man down every time. He shot an Irishman named Wills, who was in the affair from his congenital love of a brawl, in the arm; Gallagher, a Southerner from the Mississippi Bottom, in the face; Voorhees, a half-grown hobbledehoy from Bear Creek, in the shoulder; and another gentleman, whose name I will not mention, as he is prepared to prove an alibi, and besides stands six feet two in his moccasins. ... Bills of indictment were found at the October term of court against Levi Williams, Mark Aldrich, Jacob C. Davis, William N. Grover, Thomas C. Sharp, John Wills, William Voorhees, William Gallagher and one Allen. They were based on the testimony of two idle youths, named Brackenbury and Daniels, who had accompanied the expedition from Warsaw to Carthage on the 27th of June, and had seen the whole affair" (Whitney, The Mormon Prophet's Tragedy: a Review, 87; and Hay, 'The Mormon Prophet's Tragedy,' pg 675 & 677). They undoubtedly recognized their vulnerability and fled the country. A contemporary witness reported these three as saying that they were the first men at the jail, that one of them shot through the door killing Hyrum, that Joseph wounded all three with his pistol, and that Gallaher shot Joseph as he ran to the window... The citizens of Green Plains were said to have given Gallaher and Voras new suits of clothes for their parts in the killing" (Dallin Oaks and Marvin Hill, The Trial of the Accused Assassins of Joseph Smith, pg 79). The evidence that they lived seems to be stronger than the evidence that they were killed, IMO. But you're certainly free to interpret events as you best see fit. If I've missed any evidence that suggests the men did in fact die I'd appreciate it if you let me know so I get the facts straight when it comes time to write that episode. It’s not disturbing when you see it in the context. The Saints were being hunted at this time. Like literally killed and driven from their homes. Joseph had taken every legal course of action to simply ask for safety. From courts, to governors, to 2 US presidents who all cowardly said “tough luck.” Finally, he decided to run for office himself so he could free the slaves and guarantee federal enforcement of state protection. All they wanted was their rights that the constitution offered. To not be slaughtered, men women and children, by random angry mobs like at Haun’s Mill. There is still no evidence for WHY that mob attacked. They didn’t cite a reason. So when people got angry at the church and started slandering and stirring up hate, he had seen it over and over. Also… He didn’t dress up in the night like a thug and destroy a press over a desire to censor someone’s speech. He had many times defended the constitutional rights of others (and even said multiple times he would die to defend the rights of those who oppose him). He went through the legal system that was in place at the time. And they determined that the press was trying to call for violence while hiding behind the “free speech” garbage. We all defend free speech. But Joseph was not censoring. He was keeping the peace. What evidence do I have that those people had malicious intent you might ask? Because they killed the prophet when their paper and ink was burnt, instead of doing as Joseph had done for years by civilly appealing to the state authorities for redress.

@@Hala-ataa well stated and articulate. People have to remember that Joseph Smith had many capacities that he acted as in life. Husband, brother, father, friend, prophet, mayor, military officer, businessman, etc. The Lord allowed him to have these different opportunities and experiences just like he did Moses, Abraham and others who were also prophets as well as men in life doing other things such as occupational and civil duties. A prophet isn't a prophet 24 hours a day, 7 days a week as the world thinks. He's not always functioning in the office of a prophet, he's also allowed to be a person like everyone else. Just think of all the controversy there would be with some old and new testament heavyweights if we had the information and recent history as we do on Joseph Smith. Would anyone dare listen to Paul knowing what life he led before conversion? And others? Since the restoration of the church we get to see church members and most of all non church members of that era for all that they are and did.

Don't worry about it. There are countless researchers out there and they all come up with something different. Some say that Joseph did not practice polygamy and was set up by Brigham Young. We will never know the whole story in this life so I suggest you take it with a grain of salt as to why he was murdered. There are those who even say that it was John Taylor and Willard Richards 9cell mates) who actually killed Joseph and Hyrum so as I said just don't worry about it until the truth comes out after resurrection and enjoy having the gospel in your life.

Plural Marriage was not widely accepted in America during the lifetime of Joseph Smith; that is partly why the left America (Utah was part of Mexico until the US-Mexican war). Smith's practice of Plural Marriage (neither he nor any of the early Saints called the practice polygamy, a term used exclusively by their enemies) mostly involved sealings for eternity but not eternity. So, it might be more accurate to call Helen Marr a promised wife rather than an actual one. Brigham Young did not say those who did not practice would be damned; although he was rather bombastic in his replies to those critics who used Plural Marriage to justify their persecution. As I am not FLDS I do not believe it to be fair for me to represent their beliefs.

Fact, the destruction of the Navoo expositor was illegal, regardless of what the city council said, under article 1 of the constitution. Fact Joseph put the church in massive debt, to which he defaulted on, fact Joseph sent Porter Rockwell to kill Gov. Boggs, which attempt failed, Porter was caught and confessed, fact Joseph coined illegal money after his bank charter was denied and many members lost everything by investing in the Kirtland Safety Society, to which he prophesied that it would flourish, FALSE prophesy. Fact Joseph shot and killed a man while trying to break out of jail, he was not a martyr.

@@imoutbye Well we have heard different versions. My understanding was that five of the city council were non LDS. One was not present, one abstained, with no votes against. In any case that is not what discernment means. It isn't a super power. Joseph did state that the act was necessary to saves lives, to prevent further riots and mob action. He seemed to believe he was going to be dieing soon, but felt his actions prevented more violence than it caused.

The plural Marriage is a very controversial issue, nonetheless according to the the different testimonies of the women involved there were al list three kind of Sealings (Marriage) the young ones were just sealed to the prophet but never had intercourse. The second kind are the single ones, those are believed to have had intercourse with the prophet at least one in order to have children. And the third kind was those who were already married and sealed to the prophet but to stablish an eternal link between the couple and the prophet.

They quoted from his journal to show his personal perspective. If we want to know what Joseph thought, should we not look at his personal journal instead of local hear say? The unbiased facts of the events is given before the quote from Joseph Smith. Including a quote from the expositor themselves. You’re just looking for reasons to justify Joseph Smith’s murder. Joseph Smith has a lot of criminal charges against him including polygamy, bank fraud, rape etc .Joseph Smith married little children and he took wifes of other people that's why people hated him .he used to do sorcery and witchcraft. Joseph Smith is a false prophet like Muhammad. Why did not God save Joseph smith from being murdered if he was a true prophet of God ? What if the revelations were not complete? the editing and visuals of this remind me of vomit. Like I don't need a cartoon clip of "THIS IS THE LAAAAST STRAW!!!" after you say the line "...straw that broke the camels back...".
