Why Beast and SSJ2 Gohan have the SAME WEAKNESS

The big issue with Gohan is that he's never had to really work for his power. He was born with a power level over 100x stronger than Goku essentially, and with rage boosts, he's been able to match baddies without effort. He trained for a year and was brought up to Piccolo's level in the Saiyan Saga, one year to Piccolo training for his whole life. Gohan then trained in the RoSaT for a year and passed Goku, who trained for decades. Then, topping that all off, he sat for 20 hours, and was able to pass everyone in the Buu Saga. I'd be cocky if I were him, hardly training and surpassing all my mentors?

The only time he really worked for it was when he trained with Piccolo as a child. Then Goku in the time chamber. Other than that he got his potential awakening twice on namek then by the old Kai. Born with hidden power. Then he has a weak fighting spirit.

To be fair, while not to the same degree, Goku easily surpassed all his mentors, sure he trained hard however it wasn't as rigorous as we'd see come say around the namek saga. And Goku wasn't cocky at all. So it's less of a power thing and more of a character thing. Goku has always been humble, Gohan has always been timid, making it easy to become arrogant when powerful

The arrogant Gohan situations don't really bother me because it's one of the only times we possibly are seeing Gohan struggle with his Saiyan nature. And it makes sense that it affects him in critical moments since he spends so much more of his life as a human than the other characters - the trill of battle against an enemy that pushes you past your limits is like, the greatest drug for Saiyans and Gohan doesnt seek out those experiences.

I don't know about that, it does feel like a regression after what we saw in the TOP and the Moro arc. Gohan did seem to want to end his battles quickly then even while being clearly superior to his enemies, so why would they make him arrogant again?

I disagree. The biggest lesson he got from the Cell arc was to not let arrogance get the better of him, which lead to the death of his father, the death of Trunks and almost the destruction of his world. The fact that he didnt learn that lesson and got stained by Buu in the next arc was probably one of the worst parts of that arc for me. It felt like that was when Gohan started to stagnate as a character. He doesnt have to be the most efficient fighter ever but they should atleast find away to balance him by not making him regress.

This is why that I love GT Gohan, who in my opinion, is the best version of him and even in the fan manga DBAF where he gained the power of SS4 and SS5. Even GT Gohan said that when he witness the power of SS4 he states "Boy, I got to learn how to do that!" Beast Gohan is just going to be a one & done transformation and then go back to the Goku, Broly and Vegeta show (aka three Saiyans and a G O.D.) trying to evolve their Godly powers.

I think Gohan's arrogance stems from nurture and nature. He grew up a scared kid, watched his dad die, got kidnapped, forced to undergo brutal training by the person who fired the killing beam, watched his friends die, ran away from Nappa, watched his MENTOR die and got beat up by the Ginyu Squad AND Frieza all before ascending to SS2...Dude's growth is always noted, but after considering all the mental, emotional, and physical losses he suffered its understandable where the arrogance would come in when he realizes he's the strongest one in the room. But his Saiyan heritage must also be considered. The Saiyans are conquerors and warriors. Gohan's empatheric human side remained largely in charge, I think, because he had no desire to be strong. Once he actually *was* strong, even in consideration to the others, his Saiyan side took over and he realizes "Oh--yeah, I get it. This feels *good.*" It is a character flaw and one he definitely needs to overcome, but I totally understand why he'd be like that. Plus, in all due fairness, he's witnessed Piccolo die or come close to dying MANY times, so I imagine he gets over the shock faster than we think is appropriate 😂

You can tell that Goten was just never meant to BE anything because Toriyama gave him nothing to work with, he cant even use his emotions as a powerup with the perfect conditions, he's just there to be an add on to trunks.

Gohan is a good example of a character that wasn't meant to be seen grown up and by that I mean his story ended when he was a child and after that the writers kept making up excuse to give him a character arc. This is the problem with a lot of child characters, its difficult to keep giving them character arcs as they grow up because there first arc usually centers around them growing up. Goku is a rare case for a child character since his character has to do with his passion for fighting instead of him being a child or teenager.

Plus, Gohan didn't have a rival to push himself to new limits unlike Goku with Vegeta, and both were great rivalries to push themselves to new heights. They hyped up this form as something distinct from super saiyan- so... when WE strain ourselves in a panic state, there are lingering effects. Hell, it took _me_ sixteen years to heal from the kind of damage that can do. They could definitely foreshadow something like this, by having progressively more white hair lingering in his normal form, from the _stress_ he's putting himself through in that transformation- and it'd be a great indicator of him _losing_ himself.

BASICALLY in the T.O.P. he had no way to determine that he might be that strong so therefore Gohan was more careful;thoughtful and etc. ...because there were more powerful foes there so his confidence and arrogane got scaled back...unlike in the Cell Saga and the Movie where HE WAS the powerful one and COULD have taken care of the foes straight away but having Gohan know that this enemies are no treat gave him such a confidence and arrogance boost...which then makes him act the same!!! So...when he thinks or know that he's thestronger one,he get's too cocky but when he isn't strong enough,he's more unsure and more toughtful of his actions... I.e. no wonder since,ever since Raditz Gohan was forced to play carefully until he got the power to erradicate his enemies,which gives him the said arrogance since (no wonder) he d be able to treat his enemies the way he was treated when he was weak...which then lwt's him overestimate himself worse than Vegeta ever did...

The thing is Gohan is imperfect character who is not a warrior. He is just a second plan, or we can say last resort if Goku or Vegeta is not there. This is how Gohan is characterized by creators from very beginning, and this is how they are and will always going to be portraying him. If any day he gains warrior mindset (which is impossible), then it would cost dearly as Goku and Vegeta importance in the series will fall apart which creators never wants thanks to their large fanbase.

I wouldn't say tournament Gohan lacked this issue, but rather the situation is what helped Gohan. You see, Gohan only ever acts like this whenever he thinks he's the strongest in the room. For the tournament, not only did Gohan enter the tournament knowing there'd likely be people above him he should save his energy for, but he had also been humbled by Krillin's strategy, teaching him the tournament wasn't all about power. But then you go to Cell Max and once again all there is to the fight is overpowering the monster, or at least that's clearly what Gohan is thinking.

Gohan's human most of the time, but in fights he's pure Saiyan mentality. You know before the retcons that Saiyans were mostly good enslaved warriors that were misunderstood. Radditz was confident and emotional, Nappa was confident and pugnacious, Vegeta was prideful and pugnacious, Bardock was the average Saiyan jerk until he learned what being evil does and his squad weren't much different, Broly was a jerk and everything the Legendary Super Saiyan was said to be, Turles was prideful but mostly calm, Goku was prideful but even he had his emotional moments. Tarble has to be the only exception being a pure Saiyan without any head injury or forced indoctrination of peace. Turles barely emoting and Tarble barely and afterthought are the only real exceptions. Goten and Trunks are slightly mischievous as kids but they were definitely hyped up as mostly what a warrior should be and as teens are definitely serious fighters. Gohan even trying to stay in a calm mind or unable to get angry still had him act the same way in Buu saga. He's got the thrill of the hunt but not the thrill of the kill like most Saiyans have, that one part has to be the humanity diluting Saiyan but Future Trunks looks at things rationally and fights to ensure peace at the quickest conclusion.

Down to the toying with opponents until cornered troupe. His aversion to fighting. His kinder personality. He just lets it all out. It all boils down to character progression for all these characters. Power progression has happened for Goku, Vegeta, Piccolo, and Gohan. They have gotten that part down. The writers are struggling with actual character progression. You can have common sense but they still make mistakes but not the same mistakes. These characters are making the same ones over and over again. They need to do better. I'm not holding out hope though.

He runs away from his moral obligation to use his power for the good of the world and his personal obligations to protect his family. This is funny, and by that I mean horribly sad, because one of his reasons for gaining SSJ, at least in the anime, was so that he DIDN'T need to rely on others. He could protect himself, protect those he cared about. The whole passing of the torch after Cell was to show that Goku wasn't going to be there forever to do all the saving. But like Vegeta, Gohan can't be allowed to grow. So he regressed.

@@ttravis10 yeah but that doesn't mean he shouldn't train logically, there are a lot of threats out there and some threats might be to big for Goku and Vegeta or Goku and Vegeta might not be on planet when disaster arose , example the resurrected F , him assuming that Goku and Vegeta can isn't very logical coming from someone as smart as Gohan, maybe it's trauma from past , I don't know it never been truly highlighted , knowing he is immediately ready to jump into action when Goku or Vegeta isn't around

Super Saiyan was a legendary display. Super Saiyan 2 was a legendary display. These things took time in the arc to come to fruition. The problem is people tend not to care about, for example, Mary Sue becoming a master Jedi overnight with no elements of good story writing. Gohan is Mary Sue. It makes me mad because I want to like him but I just can't anymore.

Its because he gets these power spikes with little effort and insufficient experience and so it gets to his head. Goku and Vegeta have better mental training for this kind of stuff now to handle it at least a bit better since they're been burned in the past from letting their power increases get to their heads.

That arrogance that the writers gave Gohan makes zero sense in all honesty, if they wanted to give Gohan some kind of weakness they could of just made him a over thinker sometimes, that actually makes sense and matches his everyday personality because he’s smart and has duties/ responsibilities even when he’s not fighting but the arrogance thing literally comes out of nowhere, honestly thats just poor writing, it’s like they make Gohan literally unrecognizable when he transforms into Ultimate for the first time and Beast for the first time, and what makes all of this worse is that the arrogant thing isn’t even consistent writing, Gohan was arrogant one time and that was when he first actually used his new ultimate form to fight against Buu and then after that Gohan never showed a sign of arrogance again in his ultimate form, he just acts like normal Gohan, hopefully that arrogant thing just ends with Beast only doing it once and never again because it’s just pointless to add that to Gohans character, it’s almost like he has a rare identity disorder that only happens once every time he gets s new transformation 😂 lastly him being arrogant also makes no sense because the power that Gohan uses is of the Kai’s and the Kai’s are known to be peaceful, well behaved and very mature and wise so it makes even less sense that Gohan is arrogant plus Gohan tales after his human side more than his saiyan side and even when Gohan turned ss1 or ss2 as an adult or a teen he still never showed any sign of arrogance, what were they thinking by writing that in his character to begin with? I wonder if the whole becoming arrogant when achieving a new power, is really just intrinsic to Gohan as a character. Could be Half Saiyan blood dulling his mind, but I wonder if Gohan is aware of this side, post Cell arc. and so on that he doesn't want to undergo that mindset ever again because he fears what could of happened or what happened because of it (Goku dying.) That he doesn't want to be relied on or rather the burden of being put on the spot again what with happened with Cell and Buu so he distanced himself and just focused on his work or used his work as an excuse or escapism to not having to fight to not have that pressure. Though he still finds himself dragged in to situations, and still has people gassing him up with his whole hidden potential thing that he just surrenders to those impulses yet again. The Beast form may just be a physical representation of that hidden power the nature of that power, the whole 'don't poke the bear' the bear is the beast and the beast is Gohan.

Dragon ball Hero movie was a slap to the face for dbz fans like me. No effort by the authors at all. I never want to see that ever again. I already put up with the fact that Goku became dumber every new episode. Goku is not dumb, he just had no idea of social norms cause he lived in the wild since his grandfather's death. Through dbz Goku made sound decisions based on his experience as a martial artist. You can argue he threw his son to the wolves. He just assumed Gohan understood his plan from the beginning, that was his mistake. So no Goku is not dumb, he is not a fool and the fact that the author made him like this since the buu arc is laughable. For people who disagree with me, let me just remind you that Toriyama during an interview forgot there was a super saiyan 2 transformation.

I'm glad someone said this in a public manner This right here is the primary reason I HATE Gohan as a Fighter He hasn't grown in mentality since the Cell game's, he's still the same cocky arrogant brat who fumbles fights because he let's his anger and power blind him. Blanco is just the most recent example of Gohan's character staying at that cell games gohan level in regards to combat. Seems to me that Gohan as a fighter works best when he's not the main guy like in the TOP and Moro arc, but when he's the main guy he just regresses. Thank you Saiyan Scholar for being the first or one of the few to say this.

I wish Gohan got the Oolong treatment as in we rarely see him. He can't be trusted to protect anything since he slacks off so much. Krillin is a cop who still trains, Goku is farmer who still trains, 17/Lapis is park ranger who still trains, Tien and Chiaotzu both run a dojo and are farmers and they still train, heck Roshi even still trains and Yamcha plays baseball professionally yet still trains. 😂

Guys the real issue is that this whole hero movie is the worst dbz movie ever period. The final boss cell is garbage, nothing like the cell we knew and feared. And this transformation of gohan is worth nothing. Sure he powered up through anger like when he was a kid but there is one big problem the authors simply overlooked or were just to lazy to account for. A transformation is only worth if momentum was built to achieve it. If there is a story behind it. To me that's what made dbz good and nowadays its like the authors just don't care anymore. They just give power ups and transformations left and right with no true value behind. They just sleep on what made dbz good and add nothing to it. Thats really sad

Hes a character who has always had very bad writing. Hashtag Surpassing anyone with no effort,no discipline,no experience. But you check his character in core as a fighter hes aarogant he dosent care since Goku and Vegeta are around. Just a terrible mentality and its due to Goku lax nature he was too soft on him as a father. Hes never had to train, a martial artist its a way of life they dont train because of a potential threat its a life discipline. This is a character flaw that Gohun has and ultimately kills any legimiticy as a character. This is why ive never liked him as a character. I see a spoiled brat where everything is just handed to him,he doesn't work for anything he gets,and gets free pwr ups because he throws a tantrum. I sometimes get on Goku for his parental choices but that has nothing on the hot mess that is called Gohun. And too this day only person Gohun has won against has been Cell don't expect me to raise his hand of victory and hes such a great warrior. My answer absolute BS hes no warrior and never was. Because he doesn't have the mindset of a warrior.

Finally, somebody else said it I've been saying that for years. Nobody ever talks about how this kid is able to surpass the main protagonist who's been training all his life. People don't accept the fact that gohan is not a fighter like goku and vegeta, piccolo had to tell goku that when gohan was getting beaten by cell. Gohan even said he doesn't like fighting and don't forget that he always toys around with the enemy, and it ends up biting him.

They sidelined him and even straight up dissed him early on. Like a timespan that’s barely a few months after Buu they have Gohan wearing a jogging outfit, bowl haircut, skinny af, and can barely go super saiyan(forget mystic). Tbh he wouldn’t have even had time for his muscles to atrophy the time period was so close. Then they gave Goku and Vegeta such absurd power boosts it’s narratively impossible for anyone to catch up. Then they just gave Gohan Mystic back, and much later this complete farse of a transformation. There are plenty of people that will be like “bruh he trained in secret his new transformation is earned” my response to that is: This isn’t Star Wars, they have to show him training or at least mention it. None of this “let’s write a poor story and let the fans come up with theories that force the story to work then we’ll make it canon” bs.
