I feel like the newer the build the more "fancy" redstone features it will use, and it's the fancy features that tend to be broken or changed between updates. The oldest contraptions were made even before repeaters where even to delay you had to use two redstone torches (not-nots, we used to call them). The simpler the wiring is, the harder it is for it to break, since there is nothing to break.

Wondering if anyone else here remembers Alternative Redstone? It was for Minecraft Pocket Edition over 10 years ago - before redstone was added to the mobile versions of minecraft people would make maps with redstone-like contraptions without using actual redstone, improvising by using other blocks like falling sand/gravel, signs, cacti etc The things people can create within such restrictions is nothing short of amazing, and this video takes me back to those days when it blew my 8 year old mind

I love how this video basically teaches the history of computer science. It all started with the ability to convey electricity (redstone powder) and on/off switches (redstone torches). Those people who made builds with only these are basically like people coding in binary in the early computer eras. Then programing languages came to help things, exactly like other redstone components
@redtrychguy8676Күн бұрын
Exactly. Im trying to find a way to make the calculator work... How do you count the signals? If 1 sends a single redstone signal buy 4 sends 4 redstone signals, you totally have 5 redstone signals. How do you translate 5 redstone signals into that 5 we see on screen? And how does it work without repeaters
@The_Soul_KingКүн бұрын
@@redtrychguy8676 I'd say with the strength of the redstone signal ? I don't know I'm really bad at redstone, but I know a torch can power 16 redstones, so do a thing where if it's 5, it send a power of 5 and activates the fifth option, the number 5. Might be very boring to do for multiplication tho, but with addition and subtraction I think it'd work

I remember watching Coestar build a complex rail selecting system that incorporated destination selection, automatic departure, AND reloading the minecart stacks before powered minecarts were even a thing. I have always loved the booster cart glitch from older beta/alpha Minecraft ever since. At some point he went back to that area after the game updated, and lamented the booster cart section no longer worked, but the redstone rail selector should still work.
@CinniminКүн бұрын
almost all these still work and will continue to work because of the fact that they don't use pistons. all these redstone computers for the most part are a mix of torches, comparators, repeaters, and locked repeaters which not only are silent but make up the fundamentals of logical redstone as a whole whilst other components and styles such as hoppers and cauldrons youd find on builds like piston doors clutter and make computers unnecessarily complex. They're also really quiet too :D this is the same reason why today there are builds that use the exact same conceptual ideas without the need for new fancy blocks. The only new blocks i can think of off the top of my head right now that are used in computers are Barrels, Composters, and Targets

Redstone remains redstone, but i doubt the game calculations regarding ticks etc would remain the same, anything using redstone components other than repeaters and dust would probably break im guessing...
@nikkiofthevalleyКүн бұрын
The tick behavior of all of the basic components (redstone, torches, repeaters, comparator, pistons) has not changed since they were released iirc. Subtick and BED behavior, I have no idea, but the basic behavior of the components hasn't changed. Subtick stuff has only started to be in use fairly recently though, so a lot of the old contraptions should still work.
@amog8202Күн бұрын
Slight changes over time, especially to flying machines and other piston contraptions, mean that a lot of old designs involving the more complex stuff breaks. Basic stuff is fine, though
@nikkiofthevalleyКүн бұрын
@@amog8202 Oh yeah, flying machines would rely on subtick behavior simply because of how they work. So everything but flying machines and probably locational contraptions (because of recent changes with the locationality of redstone dust) should work.

Really cool video! Recently I've been doing tons of redstone specifically for structureless superflat, which has no access to stone, the nether, and most other redstone related things. As such the majority of stuff I've done lately has been with just redstone torches and dust. One thing I did about a month ago is rebuild that exact Pong game entirely without any repeaters! It runs faster, is more responsive and is even more compact than the original :^) I haven't made a calculator yet, but maybe I should finally get around to making one for the challenge!

There's just something quite mystical about ancient redstone. Back in the day, huge builds actually felt incredibly impressive. It was most likely due to the fact that redstone had severe limitations, and there were very few guides and tutorials available. Plus, there was no easy way to build massive structures other than by hand, one block at a time. Nowadays, people can create command block contraptions that can fundamentally change the entire gameplay and look of the base game, but they just don't have the same wow effect.

I mean, things that use simple restone dust and redstone torches and doesnt use any weird way of conecting stuff will probably work in all verssion, its when quasy conectivity and pistons are in the mix that u start to get different behaviors between verssions with just redstone dust and solid blocks and redstone torchs, u can make every type of logic gates possible so u can technically make fully working computers with that and it would work in every single verssion, its actually true of every games where u have some sort of electronics or physics advanced enough for that
