I read the book in middle school, right after it came out. (Wish I’d held into that first edition hardback!) I think I read it again after the 79 movie, and just picked up the paperback today at Barnes & Noble. Don’t remember what happened to Cully and Bonnie….but I think I’m going to get cozy on the sofa with my fleece blanky and some hot tea and enjoy it all over again. There is a vampire story written a long time ago, it’s called “Mrs Amsworth” (EF Beson, 1920s) about a little English country village that becomes infected with vampires, and there are some window scenes with the vampire….I wonder if King was inspired by that story?

I think that when people talk about Salem's Lot, they refer to the 1979 miniseries more than they do the book. With that in mind, the only way I can see to make this a successful movie that people will love 40 years from now, is to shoot it as close to the miniseries as possible. The miniseries wasn't perfect. It is missing a lot of scenes that would have made it so much better. They should take advantage of that and add in scenes like Barlow coming after Weasel Phillips, Weasel coming after Eva Miller, Ned coming after Nolly Gardner, Danny coming after Marjorie, show Barlow attacking the priest, show how Crockett got to the lake, make Ben's fight with Barlow more intense, and maybe even have Mark duel with a couple of vampires in the cellar. It would also benefit by being shot with a camera to give it that 1970's look and the cast should look like they could be the sons and daughters of the original cast. I saw the proposed cast of characters on IMDB. If that's who they have picked for those roles, then they need to pull the plug on the whole thing. Almost none of them look right for the roles they are playing. If they aren't careful, this will be just as disappointing as the 2004 version. If they can't make it as an extended version of the original, then I'd rather they not make it at all. That's just my opinion and I know everybody has one.

Yes! I thought the Marjorie scene in the 2004 version was all wrong. The vampire baby would be something we've never seen before.
@scoobyslick4690 Жыл бұрын
Yeah that's cause the scene built up the suspense in the 79 version. It started out being quiet with no music as Ben was blessing his cross then he sees the sheet move and the eerie music starts to build slowly from low to louder and louder.as we see Ben slowly becoming terrified and when Marjorie Glick finally rises up the music just BOOM. Same with the scene with Jason Burke when he finds Mike Ryerson as a vampire, the scene starts with silence while Jason reads the book "legends and the the world of vampires", no music..just all quiet. Then he hears the sound of an upstairs bedroom window open. The suspense begins but no eerie music, just the silence and only hearing creepy noises from upstairs is what made the sense scary. Jason then gets his cross and slowly goes upstairs then we hear the sound of the rocking chair creaking, no music, just silence then finally when Jason bursts through the bedroom door then the scary music slowly starts to build as we see Mike Ryerson as a vampire sitting in the rocking chair and the music builds and builds and builds til finally Mike looks up and hisses at Jason the music stops and he says "look at me" that's what made that scene more terrifying than the 2004 version.

Salem's Lot the book and the 1979 mini series were built on atmosphere and dread, it's the suspense and foreboding that makes the works endure. I remember when I first saw this miniseries on CBS back in 1979, there was a scene where Mike was bitten a second time at Jason Burke’s house. Jason invited him to stay at his house and during that night Danny Glick visited Mike a second time and gave him the fatal bite. For some reason, I don’t see that scene anywhere in the syndication miniseries or anywhere else for that matter. It’s like as though it was deleted permanently. Am I crazy or dreaming of something that doesn’t exist? People said that there is a scene in the novel where Mr. Burke sits downstairs horrified, hearing Mike Ryerson (upstairs) opening the window and inviting Danny Glick into his room but that scene didn't make it into the 1979 version of the miniseries. This is where I disagreed because although it was implied that the Vampire Danny Glick did kill Mike offscreen at Jason Burke's house, there was no way I would have known that there was a scene like that written in the Novel if I had not seen it onscreen in the miniseries with my own eyes. That scene was too important to be disregarded by Tobe Hooper because Mike Ryerson was invited to stay the night at Jason Burke's house, the same night where he was killed by a Vampire, and to the same house where he would later return as a Vampire himself. The 1979 version ran for 3 hours and 17 minutes on CBS and The version that people have now are 3 hours and 3 minutes. Where are the deleted 17 minutes?

I recorded the mini-series on the two nights that it originally PREMIERED back in 1979 onto VHS tape... watched it many times, and there was never a scene depicting Danny Glick actually visiting Mike Ryerson a second time at Jason Burke's house. The 'visit' was implied, after Burke invited Ben Mears over and, together, they went to check on Mike, discovering the two punctures on the left side of his neck, afterwards, calling Chief Gillepsie and the coroner to pick up Ryerson's dead body. That night, having undergone the transformation into a blood-sucking parasite, Mike confronts Burke in the darkened upstairs bedroom where he previously died, hissing and rasping like a hell-spawn demon with glittering eyes.... "Loo-o-o-o-k at me, teacher! Loo-oo-ook at me-e-e!"

It's been done fellas, lightning got bottled, it's rare, so rare we're still talking about it but without the 'vital' ingredients we're just sadly chasing that first hit, I'm not even being negative it's more the objective things that are out of our hands.. 1. We're not 9 years old any more, we've neither the sense of vulnerability, the unknown or wonder of that age now, nostalgia of the impact it viscerally had on our youthful minds is a huge component to our love of SL, not that that detracts from the merit of the presentation itself, on its own it's a fantastic feature of course but the timing of it in our lives can't be underrestimated 2. The kind of film used in '79 allows for dark corners, things can lurk there, the graininess of quality added to the atmosphere vignetting the action, now with HD 4k etc. everything is so visually clear and concise there's little room for the viewers imagination to wander, half of a good horror movie is what you don't see, it takes a great director to lean into that, Hooper had it in spades, every angle was from a voyeurs perspective, sometimes we're watching, sometimes we're being watched, like when we're looking down through the cellar doors at Ned and Mike delivering Barlow, we're desparate for them to get out, we're a safe distance away but still not safe, them getting to where we are is still only halfway to the van, it's that kind of knowhow of layered visual intensity that made it so thrilling 3. Calibre of actors, it's a stellar cast, all accomplished and perfect in their roles, as you've said James Mason looked like he was having a ball and he was, he'd been through decades of psychological dramas. mysteries etc. so he effortlessly knew exactly the note to strike with Straker, indeed his mastery of the part nails the whole production down so firmly, his wife Clarissa showed incredibly experienced chops too, the sight of her dead-eyed Ma Glick calling out maternally as she rises on the hospital gurney is truly inspired, something so knowing and profound about it, could they even get such informed experienced actors of such stock now? It's like the Beatles, it comes around once, a confluence of factors colliding at a specific moment but alter any component of it you undo the magic, Ronaldo can play for whatever team but without those around who know where to put the ball for him he can't shine like he did in the last team, it takes a 'getting it right' that can't be written, magic can't be quantified, correlated or engineered, it's in the ether and few catch it, Salem's Lot did it, it can't be replicated or 'upped', no 're-do' ever can, better to draw a line under it, study it and let it inform something new and unique

@@outpost31737 That would be cool. I didn't really want Sadler to play Barlow and I also don't want Alexander Ward. I don't think it's in WB's best interest to recreate the 1979 miniseries. Maybe Ward will play the monster version of Barlow. I always felt Barlow should have three forms in the film: 1) normal guy, 2) normal guy with eyes, fangs and claws and 3) full blown monster. The full blown monster would come out just before Ben kills him. Anyway, my 2 cents.

I've read a fairly extensive review of the remake from someone who attended the final test screening. Barlow is almost identical to the 79 version but without the blue make up. There is no character development which is a huge mistake, they seemed to have relied upon cheap jump scares. The window scenes are done well apparently and the vampire designs are reminiscent of the 79 version. The finale is very different from the book specifically the location. Not sure why Dauberman even bothered I mean the lack of character development is a sin. Salem's Lot is all about the characters not cheap jump scares.
@DannyEverything101 Жыл бұрын
I recently heard this about Barlow. I'm not big on jump scares so that really is a disappointment. My biggest hopes are that they pull off the window scenes, and Mike Ryerson's reappearance.

What is... interesting... about this line of thinking is the April 2022-ish William Sadler interview (with 'Traversing the Stars'), where, facing the predictable "Are you playing Barlow" question, Sadler unsurprisingly deflects, but keeps referencing "This is a new generation of film-goers, many of them haven't seen the previous adaptations," and "You can't play Stanley Kowalski from Streetcar Named Desire and ignore the fact that Brando played it before." Sure sounds like a Barlow admission. Sadler even refers to his casting as "an Easter Egg," given his previous King-film roles.

David Zaslav head of Discovery and the new team at WB who acquired WB, HBO, and DC from AT&T has put a higher quality standard on all of the movies which is why Batgirl was axed. Like Walking Dead’s final season and The Batman delays happened. Anything that was cut including actors by the regime has been announced look at the new DC under James Gunn. From the reaction from the trailer at Cinema Con which came from a reputable source The John Campea Show, my guess would be they believe in it and they want to make sure it’s executed correctly. Look at the time between Dune movies and the quality Zaslav is imposing on everything under the WB umbrella like The Last of Us series.

Some Horror purists don’t like their movies because they’re very mainstream with their scares and whatnot, but as horror blockbusters, I think they’re very successful and aesthetically gorgeous. I genuinely think all of the problems are with Warner Brothers. Apparently the studio has just been leaking money, causing them to cancel so many movies in development. I think things are being complicated things a little too much- almost certain the unknown release date is because of the studio's budgetary issues. Warner Bros delayed quite a few things this year because they only had enough money to promote and release two more films for the remainder of 2022- those movies happening to be black adam and don't worry darling. The only reason they haven't set a new release date yet is because they're probably still figuring out how to spend their money in how they release and promote the rest of their projects- including salem's lot. Who knows, maybe it does have another big issue that we don't know about, but it had amazing reactions and opinions from test screenings and I doubt there's much of a big thing behind it. Salem's lot is well beloved by people who follow King's work, but barely anyone even knows it exists outside of that fandom- I seriously doubt that Warner Bros is all scared and apprehensive about living up to the original miniseries that barely anyone remembers. It's not this big well-beloved miniseries like the original 'IT' was before the 2017 version came out. That's not to diminish the work, both the novel and the miniseries were great, but just to be realistic, it's not like some big pressure for them to "please the fans".

As someone who loved the book and the 79 mini series and one who actually thinks it needs an update, I don't think the book version of Barlow is capable of translating to a truly frightening movie vampire. He's too urbane and well spoken and way too "Dracula". Having Straker as the human representative and Nalder as the Max Shreck monstrous vampire was perfectly nailed Hooper, although I'm sure Stephen King would disagree. This movie is a tough pull-off regardless. The miniseries, as great as I think it is, isn't really loved by people who didn't read the book and it's very much a painfully slow burn. Still think it would've been better as a series, and Epix's "Chapelwaite" may have been the perfect intro. Have no idea what the long term plans are for that series but following that location through the original story to the Hubie Marsten murders to Barlow's eventual arrival could've been 3-4 seasons of awesome storytelling.

@@DannyEverything101 If I remember right, in the first two-hour installment of the 1979 miniseries, we only got ONE vampire (Ralphie Glick), and then in the final scene, Danny Glick sitting up in his casket while Mike Ryerson was digging the grave. That's how you do a slow-build. With this feature film, they're planning to tell the entire story in less time than it took Danny Glick to become a vampire in 1979.

If I didnt know this story, i would have no interest in seeing it. The cast is all wrong. No headliners.

Definitely some interesting choices in the casting.

By the way, instead of a literal reproduction of the book, i wud complete It; for example, making the team kill more vampires/neighbours, or the authorities investigating because the article of the PressHerald...

I'm baffled why the movie is being set in the 1970s. Seems odd to me. When I rewatch the 1979 original, I don't see it as a 1970s movie. There is nothing 1970s about it. A modern-day setting seems right. Regarding the delay, maybe what they've filmed so far, they think it's not good enough and comes nowhere near the original or the high expectations people have for this latest remake. I heard a young actor in his 30s had been cast as Straker. I'm not keen on that. I see him as an old guy. Maybe an older actor, perhaps a respected movie star would work. I don't know who, but there must be many seasoned veteran actors capable of playing that part and who have the gravitas.

I think there must be more pressure with this project than most other movies. Too many people are doubtful they can make it work.

@@DannyEverything101 Well, as I said, as a fan of the movie since I was 17 in 1979, I am not happy with most of what I've heard about it.

If they set it "today", they'd be texting one another in the Marsten house while they're looking for Barlow. lol. And taking selfies.

Its problably a woke thing... they realized Barlow should be played by a non-binary person with new pronoums and problably Ben needs to become a Benjamina too. The original Salem's Lot is too white male focused for the sillyness hollywood likes to release nowadays. Jokes aside, people saying a "classic" is dated are idiots. You can't look at a classic movie or tv series or mini-series and expecting to see digital cgi effects. That only shows stupidity. As long as I care, I don't need any new Salem's Lot movie, I'm way happier revisiting Tobe Hooper's masterpiece, and its totally woke free wich is always a plus.
