Great podcast, very much appreciate the counsel, I like the mantra “change retrieve before changing lures” and “don’t argue with the fish”. One thing Luke alludes to but doesn’t call out specifically, is invoking the “reaction strike”. Another essential point is paying focused attention on the entire retrieve as fish sometimes follow along only to strike as your lifting for the next cast. And by paying attention, absolutely when you get a strike, repeat what you were doing when that hit happened. That’s at least one fish telling you what they want, at least for the next several casts. We fish a lot of jerk baits in the Laguna Madre on an unweighted weedless hook in warm water, and often the strike is a topwater hit as the jerkshad can even break the surface and make noise.

The reaction strike was mentioned late by Pat after Richard’s great discourse on the straight retrieve of the Mirrominnow (or a Rapala Subwalk or whichever hard subsurface lure). This is all a great reminder to put “slow” or steady into the retrieve arsenal, especially in cooler water with sluggish fish. “Let the fish tell you what they want” and then listen to them. 🙂

Once again, great discussion! The way I work any bait, or retrieve any bait, greatly depends on water temp and where the fish are in the water column. Pay attention to every retrieve, and let the fish tell you what they want. I have caught fish while talking to my pardner, and have no idea what retrieve I was doing when that fish struck. Then I am asking myself what I did or was doing when that fish hit the bait. In the winter I have had my best luck on the "Drag the Cat" retrieve. I like that name, gonna have to start using that term! One more thing then I'm done, boating traffic and boating pressure. Where I usually fish is in a creek, and there is always lots of boats coming in and out. During that time I have to slow down the presentation, and fish way out in front of me because the fish have been spooked so much. I try to fish that area in the evening when the boat traffic has slowed tremendously. Thanks again gentlemen!

Excellent video, watched it twice. Just paid my subscription renewal today. I've only been inshore fishing for a year now and this has been the best fishing investment I've ever made. Online classes are very informative and I re-watch them several times to refresh my memory.

Today we went creek fishing and it was pretty tough didn’t catch anything on other lures then put on the slam shady and caught a few nice trout . I think slam shady is the best inshore lure made for trout reds and flounder and I just got my 11 lure deal in today 😁

The 4-in Z-Man jerk shad on the Texas eye is money.... You can bounce it and straight retrieve it has action.

I love the DECISIVENESS of each person's comments regarding pros/cons based on authentic, experimental RESULTS! How I wish DC politicians rode horses of integrity with as much authenticity as you gentlemen DELIVER. BS is very unpleasant to the common man who pursue career challenges (eg., fishing) in life with determination & perseverance based on abundant failure, mishaps & varieties of success. WELL DONE, GENTS! YOUR FAMILIES CAN BE PROUD OF ALL OF YOU FOR YOUR DISCERNMENT, ARTICULATION & COMMITMENT TO YOUR CRAFT.

Great podcast. You said that unless you are in the strike zone you will not catch fish. I find that when I use a straight retrieve I find that I am not in the strike zone. what do I do to stay in the strike zone?
