The noise is the cranckshaft damper pulley. For the suspension leave the door open untill the compressor fully builds pressure in the tank. However, those airsprings are probably shot and the compressor needs an overhaul. Great project, good luck!

Such a sad looking rangie. Glad you picked her up. It's a diesel but they are going up in value a bit since more and more ending on the yard. And being a DHSE in Epsom Green/sandstone leather helps. Also, the air compressor is electric don't need to rev it, just let it idling with access mode enabled the lowest setting and give the compressor time build pressure. If all bags are good and height sensors are healthy it should raise.
@paulsz6194
@paulsz6194 2 жыл бұрын
The air suspension compressor is also known to fail, which gives you the impression that one air suspension airbag s faulty, but it’s just the air Compressor not having the strength to keep all four bags inflated.

Open the tailgate or a door while the engine is idling and the pump is running - that'll give it time to charge the reservoir with the bags empty because EAS is disabled by a door/tailgate/bonnet open signal. A healthy pump should fill it up in about 8 minutes or so from nothing. Shut the door and watch her rise up in 1-2 seconds. Or not :)

Guys, nice video. Few corrections. The bmw m51 engine has an electrockly regulated rotary injection pump. On bmw-s there is no supply pump only an one in the tank which levels the amount of fuel in the tank on both sides. Recently watched a video, a bloke in Ireland has tha same car, and the horrible sound was the crankshaft pulley. It is mad of 2 pieces seperated with a rubber padding to absorbe some vibrations. If it gets old, it seperates and makes this noise. Should be an easy fix. These engines are pretty good, but they are very eensitive to being revd when cold. The head can crack. So be jentle with it. Good luck, it will be an amaising youngtimer!

Hi rob and chris. I have had one of these as a rolling project since november last year. The rattling noise will most likely be the crank pulley, the air not coming up fast enough will most likely be a weak compressor, check the air intake filter on the compressor and make sure its not blocked, you can screw it off completely to test if you like
@aylesburynumptydrivers9672

A few things that can be virtually guaranteed to go bad very soon if not already. 1 diesel injection pump will need rebuilding, this will be evident by either diesel leaking when running or more likely hard to hot start. 2 the center baffle in the main radiator is very likely rotted out so coolant will only flow across the top of the rad - overheating. 3 perished airbags will lose air and cause the compressor to overheat/wear out the piston rings. 4 sat nav drive will be dead (BMW unit straight swap and flash a lr boot picture) 5 HVAC display missing segments and fan control dial. (These can usually be rebuilt) 6 other air suspension faults 7 GET THE EKA CODE! 8 possible viscous coupling lockup. This will show by being jumpy on full lock

This Range Rover is really good. Don't worry about spending money on it, you will get it all back with interest. Suggest you first sort out a correct battery. Clean it up as you do typically. The heater will not switch off! Push the fan knob to turn 'Auto' on then wind the temperature up/down using the buttons on each side of the display. There is a button on the right side of the display to turn the A/C off/on. Check the crank damper. If removing this you will have to remove the outside part of the water pump pulley first. The more you use this RR the better you two will like it!

That noise is most likely the crank pulley /crank damper on the front of the engine. If you look at the KZbin channel called Sam's Motor and Machine and look at his video entitled I found the cause of the noisy engine I think that will be helpful to you. Great video, these are massively underestimated cars. I have had one since 2001 and still do. Current one is most of the way through a restoration project. @AutomotiveEvangelist
@AutomotiveEvangelist 2 жыл бұрын
Can't remember how much BMW was in these, but BMWs of the same vintage ran the heater on high when the resistor pack for the blower motor failed. This was a super common issue. On air suspension, you need to make sure you don't have any leaks, else the compressor will run constantly and it will burn out in short order. You can spray soapy water on all the air bags to check for leaks. When they sit a long time with the air bags deflated, they can form cracks on the creases.

Great car! I've wanted my own P38 Range Rover for a very long time! Just to let you know, it's got an M51 Engine, the older style BMW Diesel engine, the only thing these M51 engines are notorious for are the Bosch Diesel Injection Pumps failing, you can find people who recondition them, however to buy a new one from JLR is £1600+VAT when I last checked last year, and £2100+VAT from BMW. Other than that, they literally are bullet proof.
@nerotaylor5834

Also, the noise to me sounds almost as if it may be the crankshaft pulley, yet another M51 Engine flaw point, but it may also be a belt tensioner. One of the best ever made, but when they go wrong scrap or repair? I had one exactly the same several years ago. I changed a battery and everything went out of sync. Locks, immobiliser, ignition, windows...everything needed reset. Everywhere I went sorry, main dealer fix only. When the quote hit over £4000 for all the electrics to be replaced I sold it for scrap. Always regretted it but hey that's life. Good luck. It looks a real nice set of wheels.

That rattle is resonance. When you rev it you change the frequency of vibrations coming from the engine. Think a washing machine on spin. As the revs change different parts of the machine vibrate... Look for loose bolts, trim, exhaust shields, plastic mouldings etc. If it was more serious / mechanical you'd hear it all the time & it'd change along with the revs. But seeing as it disappears it'll be something resonating at tickover.

When Chris floored it I thought you was going to need a new fence. 👍🏻 that noise is going to be something silly that’s had no oil and stuck. When you floor it the sound goes. That’s a classic great to see it not being scrapped 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻

I have an identical one I got as a non runner for £300, mine was only a faulty key fob !! Definitely the crank pulley making the noise, probably best to fit a new one, I fitted a S/H one and a week later fell apart and went rolling down the road !! Looking forward to the cleaning episode. It’s Epsom green, the best colour for a P38 !

Always had a soft spot for a p38. My first car was a p38 4.6 V8 HSE it was my grandfather's he bought me a Clio but he fell in love with the Clio and gave me the range rover instead

Can't wait to see the clean up on this one. Always a bonus when you can save an old car, good news that the suspension works, that will save you a small fortune.

P38's get a bad press, a few months into me starting in the trade I worked for a JLR dealership and the P38 was launched in the same day as the Jaguar X300, back in the day both good cars. I demonstrated both to one customer he couldn't decide so bought both!

Well values for those range from £1250 for a very average one with a couple of problems to £14995 for a mint LHD!! There's lots of scope for you to sort it out and get a good margin on it.!!👍👍👍

Far more interesting than the non runner RR. I like older cars. Simple and reliable. The RR will look great with a good clean. Hope the underside is rust free. Had a 1989 Volvo 240 GLT auto estate as daily driver for 8 years from 2009 to 2019. Paid £350, sold for £500. Then bought and still have a 1996 Volvo 940 petrol estate. B230FK engine auto. Now on 207,000 miles. My workhorse. Owes me nothing as paid £250 for it 5 years ago. Like the older RWD Volvo's. Rugged, reliable, engines robust, easy to work on.

Great find fellas! The one owner RR2, keep original as poss and get the RR1 done too. Two cars in comparable colours, for the collection. Chris deserves a nice big barn, to store the collection in! Got an Outback 2.5 SE here, second owner for over 10 years. The brake pipes rotted (was a recall that never made it back to the dealer) and now been off the road for 3 years. I really wanted to do it all myself, it's the only car I ever really wanted, but it's now too much. Wish you all the best.

It sounds like sticking injectors making the clattering noise. I used to clean my mechanical injectors by removing the feed pipe, suck any diesel out with a syringe. Then fill each with carb cleaner using a clean syringe, leave an hour or so, then repeat with diesel injector cleaner. Then fill each with neat injector cleaner again before starting. Even a tiny bit of stale diesel gunge, or the dreaded diesel bug will cause injector clatter like that.

looks like the 2.5 BMW engine that I had in my Vauxhall omega great engine had over 300k on mine when I sold it still running like new the injectors do like to leak at times and if it has the same vacuum controls on it the pipes get brittle and break all over the place well worth spending some time fettling her up

Heater problem will be the fan speed resistor. I’ve had the problem on both my cars with climate control (ford Fairmont and Nissan patrol). Fan just blows full.

Cracking motor, a RR before they became a maze of electronics. Venerable BMW straight six diesel, mated to a ZF box👍From the comments it looks like replacing the crank pulley will sort the noise from the engine. It will be nice to see the transformation as she is cleaned and valeted, great week for content guys 👍🇬🇧😎

What a great find by Rob and Chris. I am almost certain that she will clean up very well indeed. You certainly don't see that many of that generation of Range Rovers about & I definitely would say " Suit's you Sir" to Chris as he looks @ home behind the wheel of the Range Rover. Here's to the next episode.

I think the rattle is the rubber deteriorated on the crank pulley, it has a metal centre the rubber then metal outer, when the rubber gets old they tend to rattle, a common fault I'm told
