To be honest I haven't got as much experience as these guys but that sound didn't ever sound like a crankshaft noise to me, big end noise sounds deep and satisfying, the noise sounded like a much higher frequency however the sound recorded by a video camera and often the paint colour recorded by a video camera is often totally different to the actual perception of the individual viewing a live situation. There could be a lessen there. Record the sound of an engine aka the sound filtered out by an electronic device there might be clues there.

Wow , just goes to show , it's not what you think..... & that kinda " pisses me off " because alot of older people drive small cars & get charged a few grand for something that is not , thanks to the viewers people now could think differently as in more options I feel sorry for the victims out there. Guys bloody great video another Win for the people. 😂

Great outcome lads! The shocking truth is though, that some poor trusting Peugeot customers are shelling out £4000 to have a new engine fitted!

You're spot on when you said you can't know everything, the most worrying thing is that another garage said it needed a new engine. How can this happen so often? How many very good cars a scrapped through misdiagnosis? That Aldi TT, sorry I mean Peugeot is a good reason to find a good local automotive engineer, not a big garage with lots of fitters and give them all your business. Thanks as always, Jon.

The noise is caused by sections of the auxiliary belt missing causing the actuator wheel to jump about. If you had run it up with the wheel arch liner out the way you would of seen it. Do at least 1 of these a week at the moment it seems.

As someone else said and I agree, the enormous chunk missing from the former drive belt would've made a heck of a din as it passed the tensioner. A nice lucky break and the comments section is proven correct! Excellent video there Rob.
@calm44772 жыл бұрын
Agreed, I think it was making the tensioner jump each time it passed through it, hence the noise.

All that so the engine can warm up 2 minutes faster? The only thing that makes any sense to me is that Peugeot needed the engine up to operating temperature and on closed-loop control as fast as possible to comply with emissions regulations.

Me and my girlfriend have just aquired one of these from her Dad!!! He had not driven it for 3 1/2 years and he is moving to a warden controlled flat. I have been in the process of recommissioning it....new tires all round, getting rid of fault codes, broken Coil spring etc.... New MOT now and only 45k on the clock we aim to keep it as a second car. Its a boneshaker but does have personality that is so lacking in modern cars.

That belt had a chunk out of it. Every time it would go past the "Tension-er/Enabler Thing-a-ma-ginger" it would bounce the wheel against the waterpump wheel and make the noise! I would bet that all that car really needed was a new serpentine belt!
@danijelcar51842 жыл бұрын
You should pay attention when buying spare parts for this engine, especially the problem is the belt, which is much thinner on aftermket spare parts and can create a problem, there is not enough friction between the tensioner and the pulley on the water pump, so bether solution is to buy original belt it will last longer. Btw nice car😎 Greetings From Croatia!

I have seen this issue 100s of times with bad belts. Basically that actuator comes in when the engine gets hot to then start circulating the coolant and as it’s squashing the belt on the pulleys that big gap in the belt is what’s making the noise as it’s thumping past the actuator is probably good just change the belt and the pump if it’s ok.
@jamiepaton54492 жыл бұрын
I have had this problem before and you would be very surprised to find that the chunks out the belt can cause bottom end type noises. Glad it's an easy fix guys

I suspect the noise was where the section with the missing ribs on that belt was getting pinched between the pulleys and tensioner wheel. It may have just needed a belt, but it was still worth putting the pump and tensioner on it anyway.

Just had this, garage convinced it's knackered.... I tested it by pulling the manual release out on the friction wheel and silence! Even more shocking on more inspection there were 3 small "blisters/bumps" on outside the belt. Changed the belt, fixed - from scrap car to fixed in 15 quid!!! How many cars have gone to the grave, or had the expensive timing chain "death rattle" diagnosed for a stupid envirocrap over complicated setup, it's absolutely stupid.

they are loads of people slagging the garage off for mis-diagnosis, ive been in the trade 42 yrs, never heard a noise that bad off an auxillary belt system, so i believe i have the qualifications to say, unless you are a peugeot dealer, the original diagnosis was a fair conclusion, wrong, but a fair assumption. we are not gods, we occasionally get it wrong, doesn't everybody... keep up the good work chaps...

Rob, I bought one of these on the back of this video... 2014 MK2... Great little car and it still turns heads and looks to me like a little supercar. Had to have the pads and discs done, and it started leaking coolant from the thermostat housing which apparently was a nasty little job, so has cost me another £1k on top of the £8k I paid for it, but for the amount of fun driving it, and the looks and comments from people about how pretty it is I think it was worth it.

I wish I’d got here sooner and commented on the last vid. I had the exact same problem on a Peugeot 207, I thought it was the chain rattling but turned out to be the aux belt. Looked exactly the same as yours and the noise was the belt slapping as it went round. New belt and it was cured

Watching that water pump set up, exactly the same as my R55 mini. Just had the pulley replaced as the rubber wears away and gets noisy on the idler set up. The thermostat housing on these are notoriously bad, we keep them on the shelf and do two or three a week and those pulleys and belts. The double wheel idler set up is another common problem. Before the French get all the blame it's possibly worth remembering that the Prince engine was a joint design of PSA and BMW. Still a naff design though! Not a great fan of Napa parts - US cheapo brand. The garage who suspected big end failure were fair enough (unless they were a Peugeot dealer who should have known better by now) but whoever didn't spot the state of that belt during its last service (or that it should have been replaced by now anyway due to age/impending failure) does deserve an earbending.
