Apparently Rowan Atkinson’s character is supposed to be the angel of love, he tries to stop Alan Rickman’s character from buying the necklace for his “mistress” of sorts by taking his time with the gift wrapping so he would be able to think about what he is doing to his wife. He then helps Sam by distracting the airport staff person so he can run after Joanna. Best character ever

I don’t know what’s more unbelievable, that Sam didn’t get shot by security for running through a security checkpoint post 9/11 (and got let off the hook scot free for it after getting caught) or that Joanna didn’t miss her flight after following him all the way back through the airport.

1:55 I love this meaningful glance Rowan Atkinson gives to Liam Neeson. In the story, there is apparently no relationship between them, so actually he does not know him and that he just helped his son, but he looks as if he knew it anyway and did it intentionally. So funny.

An early draft of the film apparently had Rowan Atkinson's role as an angel descended to Earth, but this was dropped. I do wonder however if this idea played in some way into the lengthy wrapping of the necklace scene: he's giving Harry (Alan Rickman) an opportunity to change his mind and not go down this route.

What an adorable scene 🥺 Thomas Brodie-Sangster's heartfelt performance paired with Craig Armstrong's powerful soundtrack must tug on everyone's heart strings. I just keep thinking that it's a good thing this movie played in London, not America, otherwise the airport cops would probably have gunned him down; consider this was 2003. I haven't ever watched the whole, but @CinemaTherapyShow did a wonderful video ranking the relationships in it, and I can see how it doesn't get better than Sam and Neil's stepson-stepfather relationship. This scene gives me nostalgia for something I didn't even know before.

The Holy Spirit did that for us, working to enhance the great genius of Richard Curtis.

Yes! If you look at the earlier scene at the jewellery counter in the department store, it is FULL of religious concepts, and the character also appears out of nowhere. Richard Curtis partly realises this, as Mr Bean IS supposed to be a (fallen) angel too. But, I don't think Richard Curtis even realised that including references to roses, yoghurt, holly and so on in the scene had deep spiritual and religious significance. But that is how the Holy Spirit works...

"that young" he was 13 yrs old - 12 when it was filmed. (the other actor who lost out on the part - joe alwyn - was 4 months younger so basically same age). 90% of (reported) "abduction" cases aren't actually abduction. of the remaining 10%, (about 200 a year), only roughly 10-12% are by "non-family members" I've no idea when this "child abduction" uber-fear thing somehow became legit - it isn't - "reason" to keep kids in tow but ... that fear mongering didn't exist in 2003
